Chapter 188 He Came to the Door Personally
"Daniel, are you trying to drive me nuts? I'm sick now, isn't this exactly what you wanted?"
Mason was actually glad to see Daniel. At least it meant his care for Daniel wasn't wasted; Daniel still cared about him. But the thought of Daniel defying him for a woman Mason deemed unworthy made him furious and stubborn.
Considering Mason's condition, Daniel didn't bother arguing. Instead, he asked the butler to call the doctor.
Soon, the doctor arrived with Mason's medical records.
"What's my grandfather's condition?" Daniel asked, his voice calm but commanding.
The doctor quickly detailed Mason's condition. "Although we haven't pinpointed Mr. Smith's illness, his body's pretty resilient. He has a strong self-recovery ability. When he was first admitted, several of his vital signs were extremely high, but after a few hours, they had significantly decreased."
To prove he wasn't just giving empty reassurances, the doctor provided comparative data from Mason's latest tests.
"Alright, thank you. Please keep investigating my grandfather's illness," Daniel nodded.
After explaining the situation, the doctor noticed Daniel wanted to speak privately with Mason and left the room.
As soon as the door closed, Daniel's demeanor shifted. He exuded undeniable authority. "Zach, can you explain what happened when the data started to improve?"
Daniel had a suspicion but needed confirmation.
Mason snorted, "Don't listen to the doctor; they're just trying to make money by exaggerating the situation. Didn't he say I have self-recovery ability? I'll be fine soon. Aren't you busy? If so, hurry back. Also, I still stand by my decision: I absolutely oppose you being with Emily."
Daniel had been holding back his temper due to Mason's illness, but hearing Mason still oppose his relationship with Emily made him lose patience.
He turned to the butler, Zach, with a firm tone, "Forget what he said. For my grandfather's health, you should tell the truth."
Zach, loyal as ever, spoke the truth for Mr. Smith's sake, "Floyd came to check Mr. Smith's pulse and then invited Ms. Johnson to administer acupuncture. After that, the new test results showed improvement, likely due to Ms. Johnson's acupuncture."
"Why didn't you let Emily continue treating him?" Daniel's voice was weary and disappointed. "Grandpa, why are you being so stubborn? She's far more capable than you think!"
Daniel was speaking the truth, but Mason seemed unconvinced.
Mason believed Daniel was just vouching for Emily. "You're just seeing her through rose-colored glasses. I knew I couldn't trust Emily. She promised not to tell you, but she did anyway. How else would you know my condition? Did she also claim she could cure you?"
He almost revealed that Emily had demanded a high fee for her services.
Daniel didn't respond to Mason's accusations. Instead, he turned to Zach, "Zach, what exactly did Emily say? What's my grandfather's condition?"
"Ms. Johnson said after giving him acupuncture, Mr. Smith's complexion got better. She mentioned he was poisoned and that it would cost fifty million to cure him because one of the necessary herbs is super rare..."
Zach explained that Emily needed the herb for another treatment too.
Daniel remembered Emily talking about two herbs needed for his own treatment. Could one of them be the same herb Mason needed? Was Mason's poisoning related to his own?
"Zach, please step out. I need to talk to my grandpa privately."
Daniel's expression turned serious.
Without hesitation, Zach left the room and stood in the hallway, far enough not to overhear the conversation.
"What's on your mind? If it's still about Emily, even if she's skilled, she's not right for you!" Mason insisted stubbornly.
Daniel looked at Mason with a mocking expression. "You don't need to worry. I haven't actually won her over."
"What do you mean? At the family dinner? And why would someone of her status not be interested in you?"
Mason was agitated. Despite his stern demeanor, he was very protective of Daniel.
Daniel almost laughed. "I'm not some prized possession that everyone wants. At the family dinner, she was there to help investigate a mole in our family."
Daniel paused to let Mason digest the information.
After a moment, he continued, "I knew there was a mole because I was poisoned. Now that you're poisoned too, it's even more certain."
"You were poisoned? What kind of poison? Can it be cured? Why didn't you tell me about such a serious matter? Do you still see me as your grandfather, or do you think being the head of the Smith family means you don't have to listen to me?"
Mason's emotions surged as he scrutinized Daniel.
"No, are you trying to fool me because of Emily? You're just weak from childhood, and she's deceiving you, saying you're poisoned, right?"
Mason seemed to be convincing himself more than Daniel.
Daniel then explained his physical condition at the time, Emily's acupuncture, her prescription and medicinal baths, the car accident where she saved him, and the subsequent poisoning linked to Yara.
"So many things happened, and you kept them to yourself!"
Mason appeared angry but was more heartbroken. Daniel's frail health had made Mason overly protective, leading to their strained relationship.
Daniel smiled, seemingly unconcerned. "It's all in the past. I'm much better now. We're just waiting for Emily to gather the herbs to completely remove the poison."
Mason's view of Emily shifted. She had helped Daniel, reducing his hostility towards her. It seemed Emily was acting to help Daniel.
Maybe Emily wasn't interested in Daniel, but Mason felt Daniel was pursuing her.
"Grandpa, I suspect your poison is similar to mine. I'll ask Emily about your condition. For your safety, you might need to cooperate with us in a little deception."
Daniel didn't elaborate. He needed to consult Emily about Mason's condition and get her cooperation for any plans.
