Chapter 46
Matthew was startled by the hatred in Evelyn's eyes. He didn't stop her right away.
It wasn't until her grip tightened more and more that he realized she really wanted to kill him!
This realization shattered everything he thought he knew about Evelyn. Did she really not care about him anymore?
"Let go, Evelyn!"
Hannah came back and saw this scene, nearly scared out of her wits.
She rushed forward and grabbed Evelyn's hand: "Let go."
Hannah's warm embrace gradually calmed her down, and the force in her hands slowly loosened.
Timothy and Benjamin heard the commotion in the living room and quickly came downstairs.
Benjamin's eyes showed a slight delay, but his body instinctively moved forward to grip Evelyn's wrist.
"Evelyn, relax, look clearly."
She opened her eyes and saw Matthew, with obvious disgust in her gaze.
But when she noticed Benjamin out of the corner of her eye, she turned and hugged him.
"Take me home, I want to go home."
"Evelyn, are you scared?" Hannah said with concern, "This is your home."
She didn't answer, just held Benjamin tightly, burying her head in his chest, ignoring everyone.
"Is it because of me?"
Matthew's voice was hoarse.
Whether from being choked just now or from his emotional turmoil was unclear.
"Louis was released. I'm worried about your safety, but you think I'm trying to drive a wedge between you?"
He smiled bitterly, his eyes full of helplessness.
"You're still the same. When you like someone, you don't care about anything else. Other people's advice seems like they're trying to harm you."
That's how it was before, when she liked Matthew.
If anyone dared say a bad word about him, she would definitely teach them a lesson.
Now...
Hannah frowned, not saying anything explicitly, but her gaze toward Benjamin held much more meaning.
"Evelyn, you should still stay at home. The environment here is more familiar; it'll help stabilize your emotions."
Benjamin gently patted Evelyn's head, his voice calm: "She's not feeling well, I'll take her back first."
His polite attitude was completely that of a junior, yet he had no intention of heeding Hannah's words.
He scooped Evelyn up in his arms: "I'll take you home right now, don't be afraid."
"Do you really think the Thomas family has no one left?"
Matthew wheeled his chair forward, blocking their way.
Benjamin glanced at the marks on his neck from being choked, his eyes narrowing, then looked at Timothy, who hadn't spoken.
"Timothy, Evelyn's emotions are very unstable right now. I'll take her away first."
"Go ahead."
"Timothy!"
"Dad!"
Timothy ignored them and waved Benjamin off.
He nodded slightly, then, without further delay, carried Evelyn out in big strides.
After watching them leave, Hannah vented all her frustration on Timothy.
"Didn't you see something was wrong with Evelyn? Out of nowhere, why would she choke someone?"
"Matthew, what just happened?" Timothy pulled Hannah close, gently patting her back to comfort her. "Did you and Evelyn have some kind of conflict?"
"It's still about Louis being released."
Matthew sat in his wheelchair, already looking somewhat weak, and with the marks on his neck, he appeared even more wronged.
And all of this was caused by Evelyn.
"How did it come to this?"
Hannah's eyes reddened, her voice choked with tears: "You two used to be so close, now you're like enemies, even fighting."
Matthew was good-looking, and his current frailty gave him a kind of fragile beauty that easily made Timothy and Hannah feel sorry for him.
He lowered his head slightly, his smile particularly bitter.
"In the end, I hurt Evelyn's heart. She probably wants revenge now? I just hope she doesn't do anything foolish."
"I'll go back to my room to rest."
Matthew didn't say anything more and returned to his room.
Hannah moved her lips, but didn't stop Matthew.
"Everything was fine. How did it suddenly become like this?" She looked up at Timothy, her eyes full of unease.
Preston's incident, Evelyn and Matthew turning against each other...
She and Timothy had just been abroad for a while, and the entire Thomas family seemed to have turned upside down.
Evelyn curled up in the passenger seat, eyes closed, as if asleep.
But when the car stopped at Benjamin's villa, she slowly opened her eyes.
"I have no strength left."
Her soft voice was weak, without any hint of acting cute.
Benjamin opened the passenger door and bent down to lift her out.
He lowered his head and nuzzled her forehead with his chin.
"Not feeling well? Let's go back, take a bath, and get to bed early."
She rubbed her cheek against his chest, a natural and intimate gesture that relaxed Benjamin's lips, though he couldn't hide his concern.
"What's wrong? Want me to help you?"
He had already helped her so much, but how could she talk about something as absurd as rebirth?
Besides, many things were clearly different now.
Like Freya—in her past life, she had no idea there was such a girl around him.
"Do you even have time to help me?" she muttered quietly, with obvious dissatisfaction.
The night was quiet, and with them close enough, he heard what she said.
"Your matters are always the most important."
Even if he didn't have time, he would make time.
Evelyn didn't show any pleasure, instead letting out a soft huff.
"You've already assigned Chase to Freya's side. Can you even handle your work? I bet you haven't even arranged bodyguards for me, have you?"
"Jealous?"
Benjamin's calm voice carried a hint of laughter, the curve of his lips quite obvious.
"Chase was sent to investigate Louis's matter."
Who would dare mess with the young lady of the Thomas family, the fiancée of the young master of the White family?
With Louis being watched closely, naturally, she wouldn't be in danger.
So, on the surface, it was for Freya, but actually, it was still for her?
Understanding the situation, Evelyn wasn't so dejected anymore.
Her eyes brightened, her spirits lifted.
Benjamin went straight into the master bedroom and placed her on the bed, reaching out to pinch her soft cheeks.
"Don't pinch me, you'll flatten it! It won't look good."
Evelyn puffed her cheeks, unhappily swatting his hand away.
Her coquettish tone showed she wasn't really upset, but rather acting cute.
"How could that be? You've been beautiful since childhood."
"Of course," Evelyn raised her face proudly with a smile, "your aesthetic sense is only passable when it comes to me."
He raised an eyebrow, signaling her to explain.
"Did I say something wrong?" She patted the bedsheet beneath her. "Look at this yourself—your bedding and the furnishings in this room are so heavy and dull. Where's the warmth a bedroom should have?"
As a man, Benjamin didn't like bright colors.
The villa was previously just his alone, so naturally, everything was arranged according to his preferences. Now it had upset Evelyn.
He chuckled softly, pressing his hand over hers and leaning close.
"Then will you help me redecorate?"
They were very close, close enough to feel each other's breath.
They didn't go any further, but it made her so nervous that even her breathing changed rhythm.
