Chapter 284 Alive Is Enough

Chapter 284 Alive Is Enough

At the hospital, Sophia hung up Byron's call and turned to walk into the ward.

Seeing her come in, Serenity immediately asked nervously, "Sophia, is there any news?"

"Yes." Sophia's face showed a faint smile. "Nathan's people spotted James's car on the highway heading to the border, and they've already followed it. The police have also contacted law enforcement on the Ironcrawl side and are working together to intercept them. We'll have James back soon."

"Really?" Serenity sat up abruptly, trembling with excitement, tears streaming down her face again. "That's wonderful, truly wonderful. James is going to be saved. I must thank Nathan properly."

Just as she finished speaking, the ward door was gently pushed open.

Nathan stood in the doorway, his face full of exhaustion, looking like he had just rushed over from the company.

"Ms. Powell, you're too kind." Nathan walked in, placed a fruit basket on the bedside table, and said with a smile, "This is just a small favor, nothing to make a fuss about."

Seeing him, Serenity immediately tried to get out of bed.

"Serenity, please don't." Nathan quickly stepped forward and supported her.

"Thank you so much." Serenity grabbed his hand, tears streaming down her face. "If it weren't for you, James might never come back. I don't know how to thank you enough."

As she spoke, she started to kneel down.

"Serenity, please don't do this." Nathan firmly held her up. "Sophia and I are friends, helping you is what I should do. You're not well, you can't get too worked up, or the doctor will have something to say again."

Sophia also quickly came forward and supported Serenity from the other side. "That's right, Serenity, please sit down. Nathan's practically family. You don't need to do this."

Together they helped Serenity back onto the bed.

Serenity wiped her tears, looking at Nathan, too moved to speak for a moment.

Nathan smiled, then turned to look at Sophia. "Sophia, can you come out for a moment? There's something I want to tell you privately."

Sophia glanced at Serenity and nodded. "Serenity, we're going to talk for a bit, we'll be right back."

"Go ahead, go ahead, I'm fine." Serenity quickly waved her hand. "Don't worry about me."

Sophia and Nathan walked out of the ward and closed the door.

The corridor was busy with people coming and going. The two walked to the window at the end of the hallway.

Looking at Nathan's expression, Sophia slowly felt a sense of foreboding. "What's wrong? Did something happen?"

Nathan sighed, keeping his voice very low. "I just got off the phone with people at the border, and the situation isn't ideal. James just got out of ICU a few days ago, his body is still very weak, and now he's been kidnapped. He can't see, and those people definitely won't care about his condition. My people said that pickup truck is driving extremely fast, completely disregarding the safety of the people inside."

He paused, then continued, "At this speed, they'll reach Crossridge in about two hours. Once they get him into that compound, it'll be much harder to rescue him. And even if we can stop the car now, his physical condition is dangerous. Something could happen at any moment."

Sophia's brow furrowed tightly. She knew very well that if something really happened to James, Serenity might not make it.

"We absolutely cannot tell Serenity about this." Sophia said immediately. "The doctor has already warned that her heart and mental state are both very unstable. She can't handle any more shocks, or she could have a heart attack or sudden cardiac arrest at any time."

"I know." Nathan nodded. "That's why I came to find you privately. I've already told my people to do whatever it takes to stop that car before they reach Crossridge. I've also contacted a private hospital there, and an ambulance is already on standby near the border. As soon as we rescue him, he'll be rushed there for emergency treatment."

Sophia looked out the window, her emotions mixed.

"Thank you, Nathan." She said in a low voice. "If it weren't for you, I really wouldn't know what to do."

"Don't say that." Nathan looked at her pale profile, his eyes filled with concern. "This wasn't your fault to begin with. You don't need to take all the responsibility on yourself. All we can do is try our best. Whatever the outcome, I'll be by your side."

Sophia didn't respond, just nodded slightly. No matter what, she had to protect Serenity. As for the conflict between her and James, she could only face that after this was over.

The next morning, Sophia was dozing lightly with her head on Serenity's hospital bed. Her phone vibrated in her pocket. She woke with a start and tiptoed out of the ward to answer the call.

"Sophia, it's me." Nathan's voice came through the receiver. "Good news, James has been rescued."

Sophia asked in a low voice, "How is he?"

"Not great." Nathan's tone became heavier. "About two miles from Crossridge, we intercepted the pickup truck. Those people resisted arrest, and there was a confrontation. James was pushed out of the vehicle and his right leg hit a rock on the roadside. The doctor said it's a comminuted fracture, and he wasn't recovered to begin with, plus all that bumping around in the car. He's still unconscious now, so we can't ask him about the details yet."

"It's good that he's back." Sophia frowned slightly, her feelings complicated.

"Yes, the hospital at the border has already performed emergency surgery on him. They put a steel plate in his leg, and his vital signs are currently stable." Nathan added, "It's just that his body is too weak, so he's still in intensive care for observation. Once his condition stabilizes a bit more, we can arrange for his transfer."

"Thank you, Nathan." Sophia said sincerely. She knew very well that without him, James might not have made it back this time, and Serenity would have had a hard time holding on.

"Don't mention it." Nathan's voice softened. "Don't worry too much on your end. I'll let you know as soon as there's any news. As for Serenity, don't make it sound too serious. Just say he's injured a bit and unconscious, so she doesn't get scared again."

"I know."

After hanging up, Sophia stood in the corridor for a few minutes, collecting herself, then pushed open the ward door and walked in.

Serenity was already awake. Hearing footsteps, she immediately turned toward the door. "Sophia, is there news about James?"

Sophia walked to the bed and sat down, gently holding her hand and nodding. "Yes, Serenity, there's good news. They found him."

"Found him? They really found him?" Serenity's eyes lit up immediately, trembling with excitement, tears welling up again. "That's wonderful... that's wonderful. He's okay, right? Is he hurt?"

"He's injured a bit and still unconscious." Sophia tried to keep her tone gentle. "But the doctor said his vital signs are very stable, there's no danger to his life, he just needs to rest and recover."

"As long as he's okay..." Serenity repeated this phrase over and over.

She gripped Sophia's hand tightly, choking up as she said, "I knew it. James is lucky. Nothing bad is going to happen to him that easily."
