Chapter 243
Chapter 243
The doctor stepped inside, closing the door behind him.
“Your mother is stable,” he began. “But her collapse was sudden. The concerning part is… the bloodwork.”
Serena’s spine straightened. “Bloodwork?”
The doctor sighed, a slow, heavy exhale designed to make her fear the next sentence.
“We found traces of a compound in her system. A stimulant. Something that shouldn’t be there.”
Serena froze.
Her pulse dropped into a cold, sickening silence.
“What kind of compound?” she asked, her voice low, deadly still.
The doctor hesitated. Exactly the way someone hesitates when they’re performing fear, not experiencing it.
“A substance that could have induced heart palpitations… dizziness… a collapse in someone her age.”
Serena felt something behind her ribs snap. “Are you telling me my mother was poisoned?”
The doctor looked away, just slightly. “Not necessarily. But it is… suspicious.”
Serena’s hands curled into fists.
“Who had access to her?” she demanded.
The doctor swallowed. “There was a… visitor. A woman. Black hair, well dressed. She said she was an acquaintance.”
Serena’s blood ran cold.
Arabelle.
Of course.
The room tilted.
Her wrists trembled.
Her vision blurred all over again, not with tears, but with fury, with terror, with the sickening realization that Arabelle had stepped directly into her home, into her family, into her life,
The doctor stepped closer. “Miss Lin, to be transparent… if your mother collapses like this again, it could be dangerous. You should consider removing her from stressful environments. And…”
His voice dropped to a quieter, more coercive note. “…you should be careful. People in your position make enemies.”
That was the line. The deliberate, planted line.
Serena felt her heart stutter, then slam violently against her ribs.
Enemies.
Her mother’s life.
Her world.
All suddenly hanging by threads manipulated by someone who wanted her broken.
She sucked in a shaking breath. “Send me the full report. Every detail. I want copies of the visitor footage, the logs, the blood panel.”
“Of course.”
When he left, Serena stood there, hands pressed to the bedrail, shaking uncontrollably. Her mother alive. But targeted. Vulnerable.
And the information she’d just received, twisted, planted, weaponized.
Serena leaned over her mother, voice trembling with both love and terror. “I’ll protect you. I swear it. Nobody is touching you again.”
But deep down… a new fear had sunk in.
If Arabelle could get this close… what else could she touch? Who else?
Arabelle stood in the private lounge of her luxury high rise suite, her temporary base while she avoided every traceable channel Lucien might use to reach her.
The room was spotless, silent, scented faintly with white orchids. Not a maid, assistant, or bodyguard dared come near unless summoned.
She liked it this way.
Power felt cleaner when it was handled alone.
She moved toward the widescreen monitor mounted on the wall, remote dangling loosely from her fingers. One click, and the video began playing.
There she was: Serena Lin, perfect daughter, new chairwoman, Lucien’s beloved, bursting into the hospital in a full panic, stumbling, crying, shaking as she reached her mother’s room.
Arabelle hit pause.
The image froze with Serena’s face contorted in agony, tears almost streaming, her hands trembling as she tried to touch her mother without hurting her.
A portrait of raw love.
And even rawer fear.
Arabelle’s lips curved into the slowest, cruelest smile.
“Well, well,” she whispered, stepping closer. “Look at the indestructible Serena Lin… unraveling.”
The sound of ice clinking as she swirled her drink echoed in the empty suite. She took a long, luxurious sip, then pressed play again.
Serena almost sobbing.
Serena pleading with the doctor.
Serena collapsing against a wall when she heard the manipulated “critical” update the doctor, her doctor, had been paid to deliver.
Arabelle’s eyes gleamed, dark with satisfaction.
“That panic in your voice,” she murmured. “That terror in your eyes… that desperation. This is the real you, Serena. Not the boardroom queen. Not Lucien’s untouchable darling. Just a scared little girl who can’t handle losing the people she loves.”
She rewound the footage and played it again, slower this time, indulging in every second.
Her smile widened.
“You think Lucien can protect you? You think the Zhao Group, Lin Enterprises, the media’s worship, any of it matters?”
She shook her head, amused.
“Everyone breaks where they care the most.”
She set the glass down, crossing her arms as she studied the monitor like a strategist reviewing battlefield footage.
“You, Serena Lin, are strong in every direction except one.” Her voice dropped to a whisper so soft it was almost affectionate. “Your family.”
She tapped the screen where Mrs. Lin appeared being wheeled past Serena.
“That woman right there. She is your weakness.”
Arabelle stepped back and breathed in, a serene calm overtaking her expression.
It was the calm of someone who had already decided what would happen next. Someone whose plan had evolved from revenge… to eradication.
Everything she had attempted before had failed.
Lucien survived being without her.
Serena rose even higher.
Meilin was found.
Her alliances had crumbled.
Her men were dead.
Her assets were thinning.
But this?
This was the first real advantage she had gained.
A new opening.
A new weapon.
And she would wield it without hesitation.
She played the clip one final time and let it loop.
Serena almost crying, Serena shaking, Serena breaking.
Arabelle exhaled slowly, the smile settling permanently on her face.
“Vulnerability makes you weak,” she whispered. “And weakness…” Her eyes narrowed to icy slits. “…is something I can kill you with.”
With one tap of her finger, the video projected onto multiple screens in the room.
Serena breaking down from every angle.
Arabelle walked away, her heels clicking sharply on the marble, her voice echoing behind her like a death sentence. “This time, Serena, I will get rid of you for good.”
