Chapter 167 Chapter 167
Amara's POV
We bring Tomás back with us.
Not permanently — he has the fishing village and his life there and neither of us would ask him to abandon it before he has decided what he wants. But for the first month, he agrees to stay in the palace and let Essa begin the work of taking down the wall.
He arrives on a Wednesday, with the same pack he had in the coastal village and the same expression of a man who has decided to do a thing and is doing it before he can reconsider.
Alaric meets him at the gate.
Tomás looks at him.
He says: you are the king.
Alaric says: yes.
Tomás says: and you are married to the covenant.
Alaric says: in several senses.
Tomás accepts this with a nod and goes inside.
I look at Alaric.
He says: I like him.
On his third day, the priest asks for the recording session.
He comes to me directly. He says: the three lines are here for the first time in the covenant’s restored form. The founding documents require a formal recognition when the lines are assembled. Not a ceremony — the documents are specific that the recognition is a record, not a ritual. But it should be recorded.
I say: who needs to be present.
He says: the representatives of the three lines. Yourself, as Oris. Tomás, as Kelvar. The young wolf, as the Oris line’s next generation. And Essa as the elder who holds the founding knowledge.
I say: and you and Sinclair to record it.
He says: yes.
I say: no ceremony. No formal language.
He says: the founding documents describe it as: the three lines assembled and their names set down. That is the requirement.
I say: that is what we will do.
We meet in the small conference room the following morning.
Seven people. The room fits seven comfortably.
The priest has the founding documents open to the relevant section. Sinclair has his recording materials. The young wolf is in her usual garden clothes, which I did not tell her to change. Tomás is in the clothes he arrived in.
Nobody dresses for this. It is not that kind of occasion.
The priest says: the founding documents require the names of the three lines’ representatives to be set down at the first assembly of the restored covenant. I will read the requirement and then record the names.
He reads from the founding document. The language is old and formal — the pre-formal Oris script translated into working language. It says, in the founding elder’s words: when the lines are broken and the covenant is restored, the first assembly of the restored lines shall be recorded as the foundation of the new compact, with the names of those present and their bloodline designation.
He looks up.
He says: names and bloodline designations.
I say: Amara, Oris bloodline. Last of the founding line and current covenant elder.
Tomás says: Tomás. Kelvar line. Last of the Kelvar bloodline.
He says it without hesitation.
The young wolf looks at me.
I say: she is the first student of the restored Oris coven, trained in the Oris tradition and carrying the Oris bloodline.
She says: my name. And Oris line. First student.
The priest writes all three.
He says: Essa, founding elder, present as witness.
Essa says: yes.
He writes.
He says: the first assembly of the restored covenant’s three lines is recorded.
He closes the founding document.
That is the ceremony.
Not more than five minutes. Names and bloodline designations, set down in the record, dated.
Tomás says: is that it.
The priest says: that is it.
Tomás says: I expected more.
Essa says: the founding elder believed that ceremonies accumulated weight that they did not need. She kept the formal requirements minimal for that reason.
Tomás says: practical woman.
Essa says: extremely.
The session ends. People begin gathering their things.
I walk Essa to the corridor.
She says, quietly: there is still the southern pack.
I say: I know.
She says: the Vrakon. In decline for three generations because the third point of the triangle has been absent.
I say: I know. We need to make contact.
She says: not yet.
I say: why.
She says: because Tomás needs time. Because the young wolf is in the middle of consolidating the fourth principle. Because we have three lines present but only two of them are settled. The Kelvar line is here but the Kelvar line is also very new. We move carefully.
I say: and when do we move.
She says: that is next spring’s work.
She says it with the specific certainty of someone who has already planned the timing.
I say: you have thought about this.
She says: I have had twenty years of watching and waiting and thinking. I have thought about everything.
She goes back inside.
I stand in the corridor.
The covenant is not finished.
It is growing.
That is the right note.
