Chapter 192: Worst part
Chapter 192: Worst part
Tamara’s clenched fist trembled against her thigh. Her heart pounding so hard against her ears.
Her throat felt dry as different thoughts ran across her mind.
She thought being with her mother at the hospital would make her feel less nervous, but even with Dayse sitting quietly beside her, the anxiety only increased with each passing moment.
She heard the door creak open and her heart jumped. Her head and Dayse's snapped towards his direction as he walked deeper into the office.
“ Sorry for the delay, I was attending to some other patients.” The doctor appealed with a smile.
“ It's alright doctor,” Dayse replied, nodding her head.
She watched the doctor take his seat with a tiny smile on his face.
“ Good morning Miss Tamara.” He greeted, glancing briefly at her.
“ Good morning Doc.” She replied, her voice barely audible, as if afraid it would disclose the fear pumping in her chest.
She knew the answers to the reason why she was here, but there was one she was desperate to know, which is why she had to come to the hospital.
“ Are you feeling okay?” The doctor asked.
“ Hm.” She nodded.
“ So Doctor, how's the result?” Dayse cut in, her patience running thin.
The doctor smiled. “ The result of the test we did is out.” He pulled out a file from the drawer. “ Congratulations, Miss Tamara, you're four weeks pregnant.”
Her heart thrashed against her rib.
Her palms became sweaty, her mind went fuzzy, unable to gather her thoughts.
For some seconds, she didn't hear whatever it was Dayse or the doctor was saying.
She knew she was pregnant, right from the moment Dayse confronted her. She'd done a quick pregnancy test with a pregnancy kit and it came out positive, but what she desperately needed to know was how far gone she was.
To know who the father is.
Tamara's breath trembled.
“ Why are you so lost in thought?” Dayse shook her shoulder, her brow furrowed in anger, confusion, and worry.
Tamara finally snapped out of it, she turned to Dayse with sealed lips.
“ You know what.” She didn't let her speak before turning to the doctor. “ Thank you, doctor. We can take our leave now, right?”
“ Yes ma'am, but about the antenatal care…”
“ We'll come back later for that.” She cut him short and pulled Tamara away with her.
They soon stepped out of the hospital, into the scorching sun and heavy air. Tamara walked a little behind, her fingers trembling against her teeth with her head hanging low.
Dayse's steps kept hurrying towards the car, her voice trembled with frustration when she spoke.
“ I can't believe this, Tamara. After everything that has happened, you still chose to get pregnant for that useless boy? Is this how I raised you?”
Sha glared back to see her trembling slightly. She snapped her head back and angrily opened the car.
She waited for her to enter the passenger’s seat before continuing. “ His life is ruined already; he has his sex tape all over the Internet. What exactly were you thinking?” She half yelled. “ You want him to ruin your life too?”
Tamara inhaled sharply, closing her eyes and wishing for nothing but silence. To think. To take in everything that had just spiraled out of control. But her nagging mother was making that impossible.
“ Do you know what people will say? What will Eloise say? God…after all my sacrifice, how could you be so careless?”
“ Sacrifice?” Tamara looked up at her, the word ringing in her head like it was forbidden.
“ Yes, after all my effort to raise you well, maybe if you had listened to me for once, we wouldn’t be here. I tried to guide you. But no, you always want to make the worst choices.”
Tamara swallowed hard, inhaling deeply and trying to control herself. “ Can we not do this here, please? Just..drive and …”
“ Oh, we'll do this anywhere, because I'm the one who will clean up the embarrassment, as usual. Do you ever think about me? About what I will face because of your reckless decisions?”
“ Why should everything be about you?!” Tamara snapped, breathing heavily as she couldn't take the criticism anymore.
Dayse blinked, caught off guard.
“ Drive…and stop pretending you're perfect.” She added, clenching her teeth.
“What did you just say?”
“ You heard me, everything isn't always about you, or your image, your reputation, or your perfect life. Do you even care about me?”
“ Don't be ridiculous, you know I do, I care more about you than you care about yourself. Everything I've done is for you, where are all these coming from?” Dayse defended, the look of surprise and confusion plastered on her face.
Tamara scoffed. “ Funny. You think I don't know why you accepted my relationship with Mason? Isn't it because of Eloise’s properties, because you're still obsessed with your dead best friend's success, because you still want to have everything she had?”
Dayse's jaw tightened.
“ You don't care about me, you're just using me to achieve your goal.”
“ I accepted cause I wanted you to win. I've once been in your situation, I know what it feels like when my best friend took everything that ought to be mine. I didn't want you to become a loser like me, but you've chosen to be foolish by not knowing when to keep your legs closed, especially to that useless boy.”
“Right. Because you’re such an expert at choosing men.”
Dayse's face freezes for one heavy second.“What is that supposed to mean?”
“Oh, please. You act like you don’t know. Every man you pick ends up disappointing you. But sure, lecture me.”
“ Don't you dare talk to me like that, Shawn is different.”
Tamara chuckled bitterly, “ You're so desperate for love that you can't even see what's happening right under your nose.”
The look of hurt and confusion flashed across Dayse's eyes.
“ Desperate? That's how you see me?”
“ That's how everyone sees you. You think people don't talk? New boyfriend every year? It's embarrassing.”
Dayse swallowed hard, in a low tone, laced with anger, she replied. “ You're just like your father, always choosing the wrong path and making others feel horrible for it.”
Tamara's lips parted, but Dayse gave her no chance to speak as she continued.
“ Sometimes, I wonder if you were ever meant to be my child, Eloise is far better, because no matter what I do, she'd never disappoint me like you do.”
“ Mum,” Tamara called, her breath uneven.
“ Do you know the saddest part? If you weren't my daughter, I wouldn't even like you.”
Tamara froze, her breath shattering. Her lashes fluttered with a stabbing heart.
Even at the moment, her mother was choosing Eloise over her, comparing her and reminding her how muc
h she's failed.
“ The saddest part for me as well, is having you as a mother.” She vented and pushed the door open.
Dayse made no attempt to stop her as she stormed away. She sat still in the car, her heart still heavy with pain and anger, with zero remorse about all she said to her daughter.
