Chapter 386 Her Identity Is Not Simple
"Hello, yes yes yes..."
Sterling answered the phone, immediately becoming extremely obsequious.
"Useless! How could you mess things up like this? You've completely embarrassed me. If I hadn't had someone secretly watching, I wouldn't even know you screwed up so badly. Where are you now?"
On the other end of the line, the voice seemed to be disguised.
But the anger in the person's tone was still clearly audible through the fluctuations.
Yet Sterling didn't dare show even a hint of dissatisfaction.
"I'm sorry, it's our fault. We didn't expect Byron to jump out and defend that bitch Emily. Don't worry, we're still outside watching. As soon as Emily leaves, we'll grab her immediately, take the photos and send them to you. We'll definitely get this done."
Sterling hastily explained.
Hearing that Sterling was still trying to make up for the mistake, the other person's tone softened slightly.
"You better handle this quickly and make sure you don't leave any evidence. This was your screw-up to begin with. If anything goes wrong, don't expect me to clean up your mess."
The person warned coldly.
Even though Sterling felt some resentment, knowing how ruthless the person on the other end was, he could only agree without daring to voice any objection.
However, after hanging up, he couldn't help but curse, "We work our asses off and still get threatened. This is so annoying!"
Of course, he only dared to complain in front of Wilder.
Wilder sat beside him, having heard most of the conversation.
He couldn't help but wonder, "What if we betrayed..."
"Don't say that again!"
Sterling even glanced at the driver in the front seat.
The driver seemed to notice Sterling's look, and their eyes met.
The driver shuddered and immediately promised, "I didn't hear anything. Besides, Sterling, Wilder, I'm just your underling."
In other words, he was only loyal to these two.
Sterling figured the driver didn't know how to contact their boss anyway, so it should be fine.
He withdrew his gaze, but knowing that loose lips sink ships, he shut his mouth.
They each lit a cigarette and just stared at the bar's exit, waiting quietly.
As for Emily, who was still inside the bar, she wasn't hiding because she was scared like Sterling and the others thought.
She had let the two men go but didn't leave herself. Instead, she leaned back casually in her chair, showing no signs of belated fear.
Beside her, the bar manager had a somewhat bitter expression.
He had been a bit impulsive earlier, essentially taking Emily's side.
This would probably cause some trouble for the bar later, or more accurately, some trouble for him.
He figured he couldn't hide this and was thinking he'd probably need to call Knox to give him a heads up.
Just as he was thinking this, Emily dialed Knox's number.
"I need to trouble you with something again!"
Emily got straight to the point.
Very direct.
And from her tone, it was clear she wasn't in a good mood.
Knox's heart sank slightly. Suppressing the urge to find out what was happening on her end, he said, "Whatever you need, just ask. There's no need to be so formal between us!"
"I'm at your bar right now and want to check the surveillance footage. Since it's your bar, I didn't just hack into your system, so I'm giving you a heads up. I need to look into something!"
"Okay, I'll call the bar manager right now. Tell me what time period you need, and I'll have him clip it and bring it to you!"
"No need. Just tell him now—he's right here beside me!"
Emily said directly.
Then she waved at the bar manager, and when he came over, she handed him her phone. "It's Knox on the line. He has something to tell you."
The bar manager had been worrying about how to explain the situation to Knox.
Caught off guard, he heard Emily tell him to take Knox's call.
So when Emily mentioned Knox earlier with that familiar tone, she wasn't just using Knox as a shield—she actually knew Knox.
The bar manager carefully thought through the entire process, wondering if he had shown Emily any favoritism or help.
He was just grateful that at least he had said a few words in Emily's defense at the end.
With an uneasy heart, he answered the phone.
"Pull up whatever surveillance footage Emily needs and let her review it freely!"
Knox commanded coldly.
Emily's comment about not using her hacking skills because it was his bar made him somewhat happy inside.
Sure enough, he was still important to her.
He didn't immediately ask the manager what had happened at the bar.
Mainly because this was Emily's phone, and he was afraid of wasting time and making Emily overthink.
Seeing that Emily had gotten Knox's unconditional support with just a few words, the bar manager was even more surprised. Emily's position in Knox's heart was probably even more important than he had thought.
"Yes, Mr. Green. Rest assured, I'll do my best to meet any of Ms. Johnson's requests!"
The bar manager's mind turned quickly, and he promptly expressed his loyalty.
Knox raised an eyebrow, somewhat satisfied.
Indeed, he knows what's good for him. Not bad!
"Good. After you've taken care of Emily's matters, call me privately and tell me what exactly happened at the bar."
Though Knox's tone seemed calm, the underlying authority that brooked no argument made the bar manager even more certain of his guess.
He agreed without any hesitation.
After hanging up, he carefully handed the phone back while enthusiastically making an inviting gesture. "Ms. Johnson, I heard you want to check the surveillance. We have records from the past month. Whatever you want to check from this time period, you can check! This way, please."
Emily nodded and followed the manager to the control room to review the footage.
The reason she wanted to check the surveillance was that she suspected Sterling and Wilder had been targeting her specifically.
She had never known these two before. Even though she was beautiful, it wouldn't make them fixate on her like this.
So she suspected someone behind them was targeting her, and she wanted to see who these two had met before and who was pulling their strings.
"By the way, I want to ask—when you came out to verify Byron's identity, what exactly did Sterling and Wilder whisper to you?"
Emily hadn't forgotten that after those two whispered something to the bar manager, his attitude became cautious.
He seemed conflicted, not daring to offend either side, which was why he brought up Knox.
Knox's status could intimidate quite a few people.
But for Sterling and Wilder to still be so confident and show little respect to the bar manager, there probably weren't many families that could do that.
She had a vague guess—it was probably just those few families.
The bar manager now answered everything Emily asked without reservation. "They said they were backed by the King family and the Smith family!"
Emily raised an eyebrow. "Quite the big talk."
The King family?
Could it be Zoey again?
But what about the Smith family?
Veda probably couldn't be involved this time, since Emily had made her hand hurt—really hurt.
Don't blame her for being vindictive.
It was just that Veda was too ungrateful. Emily had already let her off several times for Daniel's sake.
Emily hated most when people cursed at her.
It reminded her of many bad memories from her past life.
That's why she had struck back then, to teach Veda a lesson.
"Ms. Johnson, this is the control room. Whatever time period you want to check, whatever area of the bar, you can check it all!"
Soon, they arrived at the location.
