So, she also knows about it

"Mother, I know how much of a devil he is," Adela replied, her words laced with a determination that seemed to have blossomed overnight. "And I'm also so close to finding Anesthesia's body."

Adela's revelation left Veronica both stunned and intrigued. Her daughter's newfound determination to confront the oppressive rule of the emperor and the mystery surrounding Anesthesia's body had unveiled a facet of Adela that she hadn't fully comprehended before.

Veronica's eyes widened in surprise as Adela revealed that the matter at hand was meant to be kept within a select circle. She had never imagined that Adela would confide in someone like Elisa, her trusted handmaiden. It was evident that Adela was more deeply involved in matters than her mother had ever realized.

"What?" Veronica uttered, her voice betraying a mix of astonishment and concern.

Adela remained steadfast; her determination was unwavering. "Mother, we can't say everything to everyone. This matter is only between Elisa and me."

Veronica turned her gaze toward Elisa, who stood quietly nearby. The handmaiden's presence in this clandestine revelation added another layer of complexity to the situation. Veronica felt a mixture of curiosity and apprehension.

"So, she also knows about it," Veronica acknowledged, directing her inquiry at Adela.

Adela nodded, affirming her mother's assumption. "Yes, Mother. And you remember the lantern incident—the one that caused quite a commotion? Actually, it was Elisa who executed it. I asked her to keep a watchful eye on everything."

Elisa's admission of her role in keeping the truth from Veronica hung heavily in the air. The handmaiden's apology was sincere, and she couldn't help but feel a sense of guilt for having kept these secrets from her lady for so long.

"I am sorry, my lady. I was not able to tell you the truth at that time," Elisa stammered, her eyes cast downward.

Veronica understood that Elisa had acted out of loyalty to Adela and had taken her orders seriously. The secrecy surrounding their actions was undoubtedly a matter of life and death, making it all the more critical to maintain a tight-lipped façade.

Veronica turned her attention back to her daughter, her expression a mixture of concern and curiosity. "What are you planning to do, Adela?"

Adela's confidence was palpable, radiating from her like a beacon of hope. She met her mother's gaze, unwavering in her resolve. "It's nothing, Mother. Just do as I say. Go on the mission, and trust me. Whatever challenges come your way, you will overcome them."

Veronica couldn't help but marvel at her daughter's unwavering confidence. Adela's belief in their abilities and her conviction in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds left Veronica both proud and puzzled. How had her daughter grown so resolute when the situation had become increasingly dire? Draven had acquired the immortal stone, and Anesthesia had returned. The odds seemed stacked against them.

Taking a deep breath, Veronica found herself making a decision she had never anticipated. "Okay, Adela. As you say, I will inform your father and prepare everything for the mission."

Adela's eyes followed her mother's retreating figure, her heart heavy with concern for the impending mission. She knew that the challenges her parents would face were not to be underestimated, especially with the return of Anesthesia and Draven's newfound power. The fate of their kingdom hung in the balance, and she couldn't shake the feeling that there was more at stake than anyone realized.

As the duchess disappeared from view, Adela turned her attention to the bright sun overhead. Its warmth and radiance were in stark contrast to the shadowy secrets and perilous tasks that lay ahead. She took a deep breath, allowing the sun's rays to wash over her.

Elisa, still standing nearby, ventured a question, her voice filled with curiosity. "My lady, did you and the others find anything in there?"

Adela contemplated her response, choosing her words carefully. She had uncovered crucial information about Anesthesia's body and the emperor's sinister experiments, but she couldn't reveal everything to Elisa. Not yet.

"We discovered some valuable leads, Elisa," Adela replied, her tone measured. "But there's much more to uncover. This is just the beginning of our path to unraveling the truth."

Adela's face suddenly became grave as she uttered, "And Elisa, you are lucky you didn't go down there, or else I don't know if you'd be able to talk to me right now."

Elisa's eyes widened further, realizing the depth of the horrors Adela had witnessed in the underground chambers. She could see the seriousness etched on her lady's face and shuddered at the thought of what could be hidden below the library.

Adela continued, her voice laced with a hint of urgency, "The things I saw, Elisa, were beyond nightmarish. It's a place that defies all sense of morality, and I fear that the emperor's ambitions are far more malevolent than we ever imagined."

Elisa's heart stopped beating, and she said in fear, "Then, my lady, a terrible future is waiting for us, right?"

Adela did not say anything; she just blinked her eyes with a nod and looked at the sky.

Haley's heart felt heavy as she made her way to the academy. News of everyone's return had reached her ears, and her heart ached. She couldn't understand why her friends had been so distant since they returned from the dangerous mission.

As she entered the academy grounds, the familiar sights and sounds enveloped her. Students were bustling about, practicing their magic and honing their combat skills. It was as if nothing had changed in her absence, yet everything felt different.

Ignoring the pain in her heart, Haley decided to head to the training area. She knew that honing her skills was the only way to cope with her confusion and sadness.

Without exchanging words with anyone, Haley picked up her sword and began to practice her techniques.

Haley's irritation grew as she continued to practice, her frustration at the recent disconnect with her friends bubbling beneath the surface. Her arms throbbed in pain, a constant reminder of the injuries she had sustained in her fight with Camilla.

To be continued.
