Chapter 31
*Cross Mansion...**
Alexander stood motionless in the grand entryway of the Cross Mansion, the weight of his world collapsing around him. Lily rushed to him, her arms wrapping tightly around his waist, but he barely felt her touch. His mind was a whirlwind of anguish and disbelief, a man broken by his own past and present.
"Alexander," Lily murmured into his chest, her voice laced with feigned concern. "I tried to stop her... I really did. But your mother, she wouldn't listen. She's gone to confront Cassandra."
Her words barely registered in Alexander’s mind. All he could think about was how everything he had built was crumbling. Cassandra had not only taken his company, but she had made him her subordinate, a mere secretary in the empire he once ruled. And now, the entire world knew about their past, thanks to Cassandra's ruthless exposure. He had wronged her, and he knew it, but the shame of having his sins paraded online was a pain unlike any other.
Alexander pulled back from Lily's embrace, his eyes searching hers for some semblance of truth. "Mother went to the Taffins Mansion? Alone?"
Lily nodded, her expression one of innocent helplessness. "I tried to stop her, but she was too furious. That post... it pushed her over the edge."
He turned away from her, his jaw clenched tight as rage and panic surged through him. He couldn't let his mother face Cassandra alone, not after everything that had happened. His heart pounded as he grabbed his keys and rushed out of the house.
Lily watched him go, a cold, satisfied smile curling her lips. Her plan was in motion. She had skillfully manipulated Rachel, knowing that the old woman’s fiery temper would drive her straight into Cassandra's lair. The chaos would give Lily the perfect opportunity to regain control of the company, and with it, her freedom from this suffocating marriage.
**TAFFINS MANSION...**
The night had settled over the Taffins Mansion, bringing with it a sense of peace I had learned to cherish after the stormy years with Alexander. Teddy and I were just finishing a quiet evening together when our security guard entered the room, his expression tense.
"Mrs. Taffin, there’s a woman outside. She says she needs to speak with you urgently."
I exchanged a puzzled glance with Teddy, my mind racing as I stood from the comfortable chair. Who could possibly be here at this hour? As we walked toward the grand foyer, a sense of unease settled in my stomach. When we reached the entrance, I felt my heart skip a beat.
There, standing in the doorway with the same imposing presence I remembered, was Rachel Cross.
"Rachel," I managed to say, my voice steady despite the rapid beat of my heart. "What are you doing here?"
Her eyes blazed with fury, a mixture of disdain and anger that she had never bothered to mask. "How dare you, Cassandra? How dare you drag our family’s name through the mud like this? Haven’t you done enough damage already?"
I could feel Teddy tense beside me, his presence grounding me as I forced myself to remain calm. "Damage? Rachel, the only damage that was done was to me. I was the one who suffered, not you, not Alexander. The world deserved to know the truth."
"The truth?" Rachel sneered, stepping closer, her voice cold and cutting. "You call that filth you posted the truth? You’re nothing but a vindictive, bitter woman. You ruined my son’s life, and now you want to ruin his legacy too?"
Her words were like daggers, but I refused to let them pierce my composure. "I didn’t ruin anything. Alexander did that all by himself. I just made sure everyone knew the kind of man he truly is."
Rachel’s lips curled in disdain, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You think you're untouchable now because you married a billionaire? Don't forget where you came from, Cassandra. You were nothing before Alexander, and you'll be nothing again."
A flicker of anger sparked within me, but I kept my tone even, refusing to let her provoke me. "I was more than Alexander ever gave me credit for, and I’m far more than you can ever take away."
Before Rachel could respond, the sound of a car door slamming outside caught our attention. I turned just as the front door burst open, and Alexander stormed into the mansion, his expression a mixture of anger and desperation.
"Mother, stop this," he demanded, his voice hoarse as he moved between us. "This isn’t helping anything."
Rachel turned on him, her anger now directed at her son. "You’re defending her? After everything she’s done? She’s destroyed you, Alexander! Everything you built, everything you worked for, gone because of her!"
As she spoke, I could see the pain in Alexander’s eyes, the way his shoulders slumped as if the weight of the world was crushing him. He looked at me then, and I saw something in his gaze that took me by surprise: regret.
"I know," he said quietly. "But what’s done is done. Nothing you say or do will change that."
Rachel’s face twisted with disbelief, her fury boiling over. "You’re just going to let her win? You’re going to let her take everything from you?"
Alexander’s voice broke as he admitted, "I already lost everything. There’s nothing left to fight for."
His words hung in the air, and for a moment, I felt a pang of sympathy. This was not the man I once knew, the arrogant, powerful figure who had made my life a living hell. This was a broken man, one who had lost everything he held dear. But I couldn’t afford to let my guard down, not now.
"Alexander," I said softly, "I didn’t do this to destroy you. I did it to take back what you took from me."
He looked at me with eyes full of regret, as if he could see the price we had both paid. "And now you have it all. But at what cost, Cassandra? At what cost?"
Before I could answer, Rachel’s voice cut through the tension, dripping with venom. "This isn’t over, Cassandra. I won’t let you get away with this."
Teddy, who had remained silent until now, stepped forward, his presence commanding and protective. "That’s enough, Mrs. Cross. Cassandra has made her choice, and so has Alexander. You need to leave."
Rachel shot me one last glare, her eyes burning with a promise of retribution, before she turned on her heel and stormed out of the mansion. Alexander hesitated, his gaze lingering on me, as if searching for something—something that was no longer there.
Finally, he turned and followed his mother out, leaving Teddy and me standing in the foyer. The tension in the air slowly began to dissipate, but I could still feel the tremor in my hands, the remnants of adrenaline coursing through my veins.
I let out a shaky breath, reaching for Teddy’s arm to steady myself. "I didn’t expect this tonight."
Teddy wrapped his arm around me, pulling me close. His warmth was reassuring, but his voice was tinged with concern. "You handled it well. But Cassandra, are you sure about this? Posting all that... it’s not like you."
I looked up at him, feeling the resolve hardening within me. "It’s exactly like me. They needed to know the truth, Teddy. And now they do."
But as the words left my mouth, a small part of me couldn’t help but wonder if it had all been worth it. The revenge, the pain, the destruction—it had given me back the power I lost, but at what cost? Something inside me had changed, something I wasn’t sure I could ever get back.
As we stood there, the night growing darker around us, I realized that this battle, this war of wills and hearts, was far from over.
