Chapter 205 Your Lips Are So Sweet
"I don't know who he is! I really don't!"
The man lay on the ground, gasping weakly.
"Then you can die."
Zachary's voice was a low growl.
The man fell to his knees, pleadin' for his life. "Please don't kill me! My son's just two months old, he needs his dad."
Her voice cracked, "Your kid's got a dad, but mine didn't even get a chance to live?"
He roared in fury.
"I'm sorry, I really didn't know Ms. Elikin was pregnant. If I'd known, I never would've taken this job..."
"In that case, you can make up for your mistake. As long as you help us find the person behind this, Mr. Jennings will show you mercy."
Lucas spoke up.
The man saw a flicker of hope "What do you want me to do?"
Zachary said nothing. Lucas walked over and pulled out a knife.
The man's face turned deathly pale. He wanted to flee but had nowhere to go.
Lucas was skilled at handling knives. The blade gleamed coldly as it flipped through his fingers. He crouched down with a cold laugh. "Afraid of dying?"
The man nodded vigorously.
"Then I'll let you live."
As Lucas's words fell, the knife flashed, and the ropes binding the man's hands and feet came loose.
"Stop hiding. Walk out in the open. Mr. Jennings is giving you a way to live—you'd better treasure it."
The man looked incredulous. He cast a suspicious glance at Zachary.
"Get lost."
Zachary only said one word. Despite his injuries, the man scrambled up from the ground and limped toward the exit.
"Have someone follow him."
Zachary ordered.
"Yes, Mr. Jennings."
Lucas gave the command, and immediately someone followed the man's trail.
On the way back, Lucas asked suspiciously, "Mr. Jennings, aren't you afraid someone will silence him?"
Zachary's handsome face remained dark. "Since they already know I'm investigating this, they'll definitely try to silence him. What we need to do is draw them out."
At a red light, the Maybach pulled to a stop. Lucas looked out the window. Directly across the intersection, David's silver Bentley sat waiting.
"Mr. Jennings, it's Mr. Brown."
Lucas reminded him.
Zachary looked up and immediately spotted David across the way. David had seen Zachary too.
Under the night sky, their eyes met. David's held a cynical air, but concealed a barely perceptible ruthlessness.
The light turned green. The two cars passed each other going opposite directions.
Just as the Bentley was about to disappear, Lucas noticed a woman sitting in the back seat. He wasn't entirely certain, his brows furrowing as he fell into thought.
"What is it?"
Zachary noticed Lucas's odd expression.
"I think I just saw Ms. Davis. She seemed to be in Mr. Brown's car."
Lucas said.
Hearing that name, Zachary's brows couldn't help but furrow.
Back in Rosewood City, there was no way to avoid Alicia's presence.
"What has she been doing lately?"
"After Dennis hit Ms. Davis, she spent two days in the hospital, then disappeared. She hasn't been to Maple Estate or returned to the Davis family."
Zachary's expression darkened.
He didn't care about Alicia's movements—he only worried that she'd stir up more trouble and upset Quinley.
"Find out what she's doing. Find a way to get her out of Rosewood City."
"Yes."
When Zachary returned to Maple Estate, Quinley was busy in the kitchen with Martha.
"You're back?" She poked her head out from the kitchen.
Zachary changed his shoes at the entrance. "Why didn't you sleep more?"
"I can't sleep anymore. If I sleep now, I won't be able to sleep tonight."
As soon as she finished speaking, she suddenly realized the ambiguity in her words. Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
"Mr. Jennings, go wash your hands and have a late-night snack."
Martha brought out the prepared dishes from the kitchen—all Zachary's favorites.
He went to the washroom. Quinley followed and stood in the doorway chatting with him.
"I want to go out and work."
"Why the sudden desire to work?"
Zachary looked puzzled.
This question—Quinley had seriously considered it after seeing Oliver at Cloudrest Peak. A person could only make their life full when they had ideals in their heart.
She didn't have Oliver's kind of lofty ideals, but she was a down-to-earth person. Work allowed her to see her own value and meaning.
"I can't sit idle."
Quinley didn't tell the whole truth. But Zachary understood.
Actually, he didn't want Quinley to go out and work. First, it was too hard—he couldn't bear to see her suffer. Second, he always worried she'd encounter danger.
But she wasn't just his wife—she was also herself. As herself, she would have her own pursuits. He shouldn't stand in her way.
"How about coming back to the company?"
Zachary suggested tentatively.
Quinley immediately shook her head in refusal. "If I go back to be your secretary again, people will gossip. I don't want them saying our company doesn't separate public from private matters. I've made up my mind—I'll find a job myself. Any type will do."
She was an opinionated person. Once she'd decided on something, no one could shake her resolve.
"How about a branch office then? I'll have Lucas arrange it."
Zachary was about to call Lucas.
Quinley immediately stopped him. "Can you let me try on my own?"
She was stubborn, persistent.
Zachary had no choice but to compromise.
"But you have to promise me—if it's too tiring, quit. If you encounter any danger, tell me immediately."
"Mr. Jennings, I'm going to work, not on vacation, and certainly not on an adventure."
Quinley rolled her eyes at Zachary's overcautiousness.
"I'm worried about you."
Zachary blurted out.
Warmth flooded Quinley's heart. She linked her arm through his strong one.
"I'm not a child anymore. I'll be twenty-six next month."
Zachary tapped her nose playfully. "To me, you're still my little girl. No growin' up necessary."
When she was a child, she'd spent so long tryin' to grow up, but now Zachary was tellin' her, "I want you to stay a kid at heart".
Another warm current rushed into Quinley's heart.
"Zachary, confess honestly—did you sneak out and eat honey just now?"
Quinley deliberately put her hands on her hips with mock fierceness.
Zachary missed the joke. He leaned in, lips pursed, waitin' for Quinley to give him the go-ahead.
"No, I swear I didn't."
Quinley laughed.
She and Zachary were alike – they'd both been wound tight, afraid to slip up. But marriage had mellowed them out.
"If you didn't sneak honey, why is your mouth so sweet?"
Zachary caught on belatedly, finally understanding Quinley's meaning.
As Martha headed to the kitchen for plates, he pulled Quinley close, cradling her face in his hands.
"Did you secretly taste already? How did I not know? That won't do—I need to taste again."
As he spoke, he immediately captured Quinley's lips, kissing her thoroughly.
Martha came out of the kitchen with soup and caught the scene. She smiled, then slipped back into the kitchen.
Then she pulled out her phone and sent a message.
[Don't worry, they're doing great!]
In Lakeside City, Elise got the news and leaned back in her chair with a sly grin. "Mom, what's got you smilin'?"
On the balcony, Wise was hanging laundry and poked half his head out to ask.
Elise smiled without speaking. "Wise, in a couple days, come with me to Rosewood City."
Just as Elise was about to leave, an unexpected visitor showed up out of nowhere.
