Chapter 50

Ruby

I was confused. More than I had ever been in my life. It was all because of my crazy ass mate. Why couldn't I just be mated to someone normal? Someone who didn't want to control me or cause me emotional and physical pain? Was that asking too much? I was at war with myself, when I was usually so certain about everything. I blamed the mark he forced upon my neck for my rollercoaster of emotions. It was the reason for my uncertainty. The reason why I was still stuck standing here, when I should be running away. It was like he read my mind. Almost as if knew what I would do before I did it. I didn't like that feeling at all. What I would give to have never met him. To never have looked into his eyes at that moment. Yet a part of me, a small part of me, deep down, was telling me that I was lying to myself. That he was all I would ever want. Despite how crazy he was, I would end up giving in at some point. I ignored that part. I wouldn't be as weak and forgiving as Sapphire was with River. I wouldn't fall for him because of a few I'm sorry's and promises that he would undoubtedly break. He could continue trying to persuade me and I would resist.

With a new feeling of determination, I walked out the hell hole he called a lab, and made my way to the main house. It was beautiful, I would give him that. But something about it seemed cold and lonely, dark even. I walked in the door and he was there. He turned around and looked at me a bit surprised, but hid it quickly.

"I see you've decided to stay." I didn't bother giving him a response.

"Where will I sleep?" I wanted a soft bed and to be alone. It was the least he could do.

"Follow me." I did without saying a word. We went up some stairs and down a hall, until we arrived at a door. He opened it and ushered me in.

"Wait. Is this your room?" His scent was everywhere and it was nicely furnished.

"Of course."

"I'm not sleeping in here with you. I need my own room."

"You'll sleep wherever I tell you and be grateful for it." Who did he think I was? There was that bipolarness again.

"I will not be sleeping in this room. You can't make me. I would rather sleep outside than share a bed with you. Are you insane?" I knew he didn't like my tone by the way his body tensed. He had anger issues. That much was apparent. He reminded me of a child who was in desperate need of discipline.

"I'm trying to make this work. Why are you being so difficult?"

"Me? I'm being difficult?" I couldn't believe what he was saying. He thought I was the one with the problem?

"Yes you are. You're my mate. All you've done is push me away from the moment we met. This is not how things are supposed to be."

"For once we agree on something. Nothing was the way it was supposed to be. You don't forcibly mark your mate. You don't perform experiments on her. You sure as hell don't threaten the people she loves to get her to stay. The least you could do is give me my space." I was so sick of his nonsense. He ran his fingers through his hair frustrated. I crossed my arms daring him to say I was wrong.

"If you just tried to see my point of view. Understand why I did those things." He seemed to be talking more to himself than me as his voice trailed off. What was there to understand. How insane his behavior was?

"I can't imagine you coming up with a reasonable explanation. But I would love to hear you try." I knew I wouldn’t budge no matter the excuse. But I was a bit curious.

"It doesn't matter what I say, does it? Nothing can change the way you think of me. Nothing can erase the things I've said and done. I can't count the times my mother told me that first impressions were lasting impressions. I never knew how true it was until now. Normally I wouldn't care what anyone thought of me, but you-" He stopped and inhaled. "You can have your own room. Last door on the right."

He walked away from me, and once again, I was left standing there confused.
