Shadows of Consequence
The air outside the Catacombs was heavy with tension as the team emerged, battered but alive. The relief of victory was dampened by the weight of their struggles and the unknown consequences of destroying the Shadow Prism.
Peter adjusted his cloak, his eyes scanning the horizon as if expecting another attack. “We may have won this battle, but something doesn’t feel right.”
Carly nodded, her face pale. “That energy… when the Prism shattered, I felt something—like a part of it escaped.”
James, leaning heavily on his staff, sighed. “The dark Lucian was just the beginning. I saw flashes of something worse in the visions the Prism showed me. We need to prepare.”
Lucian clenched his fists, his knuckles white. He had barely spoken since the fight, his gaze distant. The revelation of his dark counterpart still lingered in his mind. Was that truly a reflection of his inner self?
Bella broke the silence. “We should head back to the safe house. The night creatures might regroup, and we can’t afford to be out in the open.”

The journey back to the safe house was uneventful but strained. The team avoided speaking, each lost in their own thoughts. When they finally arrived, Carly set about tending to their wounds while Bella secured the perimeter with enchantments.
As James and Peter sat by the fire, Peter finally spoke. “You’ve been quiet,” he said, looking at James. “What’s on your mind?”
James hesitated, his hands gripping his staff tightly. “I made a mistake before… trusting Peter’s dad. I thought I could outsmart him, but I nearly cost us everything.”
Peter shook his head. “You’ve more than made up for it, James. We couldn’t have done this without you.”
“But at what cost?” James muttered, his voice barely audible. “The Prism is gone, but its power lingers. And I… I fear what’s coming.”
Peter placed a hand on his shoulder. “Whatever it is, we’ll face it together.”

In the corner of the room, Carly and Bella exchanged a glance. Carly had been quiet ever since the fight, her thoughts swirling with new revelations. The trance she had entered before had revealed so much—Peter and Lucian’s connection, their shared lineage, and the implications for their future.
But Carly also had other matters weighing on her mind. Her feelings for Williams had grown over time, but she had kept them hidden, unsure of how to express herself. Now, in the wake of their recent battles, those emotions felt more urgent than ever.
Bella noticed her distraction and nudged her playfully. “You’re thinking about him, aren’t you?”
Carly’s cheeks flushed. “What? No, I’m just… tired.”
Bella smirked. “Sure, and I’m a night creature. Come on, Carly, it’s obvious. You should tell him.”
Carly hesitated, her gaze drifting to Williams, who was sharpening his blade in the corner. “It’s not that simple.”
“Nothing worth having ever is,” Bella replied, her tone unusually serious. “You never know when you’ll get another chance.”
\---
As the group settled down for the night, a knock echoed through the safe house. Everyone froze, their hands instinctively going to their weapons.
“Who could it be?” Bella whispered, her voice tense.
Lucian moved to the door, his sword drawn. He opened it cautiously, revealing a hooded figure standing in the shadows.
“Who are you?” Lucian demanded.
The figure stepped forward, pulling back their hood to reveal a young man with striking silver hair and piercing violet eyes.
“My name is Kael,” he said, his voice calm but firm. “I need your help.”
The team exchanged wary glances.
“What kind of help?” Peter asked, stepping forward.
Kael hesitated before speaking. “The Shadow Prism may be destroyed, but its fragments are scattered across the realms. If they fall into the wrong hands, they could create something far worse than what you just faced.”
James frowned. “And how do you know this?”
Kael’s expression darkened. “Because I’ve been tracking them. And one of those fragments has already been found… by the Hoods.”
Lucian’s eyes widened. “My father…”
Kael nodded. “Yes. He’s using it to create something—an army, perhaps, or a weapon. I don’t know the full extent of his plans, but I know he must be stopped.”
Peter stepped forward, his determination evident. “Then we’ll stop him. Together.”
Kael’s gaze softened, but his tone remained serious. “It won’t be easy. The fragment’s power is unpredictable, and the Hoods aren’t the only ones after it. Others—powerful beings—have taken an interest.”
“Others?” Bella asked, her voice skeptical.
Kael nodded. “Witches, warlocks, night creatures… and someone far more dangerous. A woman known only as Selene. She’s a sorceress with ties to the ancient world, and she’ll stop at nothing to claim the fragment for herself.”
\---
The weight of Kael’s words settled over the group as they prepared for the journey ahead. The team was no stranger to danger, but this felt different—bigger, darker, and more uncertain than anything they had faced before.
As they set out the next morning, Carly found herself walking alongside Williams. The tension between them was palpable, but neither seemed willing to break the silence.
Finally, Carly took a deep breath. “Williams, I need to tell you something.”
He glanced at her, his expression unreadable. “What is it?”
“I… I care about you,” she said, her voice trembling. “More than just as a teammate.”
Williams stopped, turning to face her fully. For a moment, he said nothing, his eyes searching hers.
“I care about you too, Carly,” he said finally, his voice soft. “But this world we live in… it doesn’t leave much room for things like this.”
Carly nodded, her heart sinking. “I know. But I had to say it. I couldn’t keep it to myself anymore.”
Williams smiled faintly. “And I’m glad you did. Whatever happens, Carly, I want you to know… you mean a lot to me.”
Their moment was interrupted by Peter’s voice. “Come on, you two! We’ve got a fragment to find.”
Carly and Williams exchanged a look before hurrying to catch up with the others.

As the group ventured deeper into the forest, Kael led the way, his knowledge of the terrain proving invaluable. But an ominous feeling hung over them, as if they were being watched.
Unbeknownst to them, Selene was already tracking their movements, her eyes gleaming
with anticipation. The fragment was close, and she would stop at nothing to claim its power.
