Tensions Rising
The soft hum of campus life had returned, yet for Peter and the group, things were anything but normal. The team had survived the nexus, but they were still haunted by the shadows of their battle. Each of them carried scars, both physical and emotional, and the weight of what lay ahead. But sometimes, the greatest challenges weren’t the ones fought with magic—they were the ones fought within.
Carly sat at the edge of the courtyard fountain, her thoughts swirling as she watched the water ripple. Williams approached her, his expression unreadable as he sat beside her.
“You’ve been quiet,” he said after a moment.
Carly glanced at him, her eyes softening. “Just thinking. About everything. About us.”
Williams raised an eyebrow. “Us?”
She hesitated, the words caught in her throat. “I mean… the team,” she said quickly, her cheeks flushing. “We’ve been through so much. It’s hard to believe we’re still standing.”
Williams chuckled, a sound that made Carly’s heart flutter despite herself. “We’re a stubborn bunch. I think that’s why we’ve made it this far.”
She smiled, but her thoughts betrayed her. She wasn’t thinking about the team—she was thinking about him. Over the months, Carly had found herself drawn to Williams in ways she hadn’t anticipated. His strength, his humor, the way he always managed to keep everyone grounded. But she wasn’t sure if he saw her the same way, and the uncertainty gnawed at her.

Across the courtyard, James leaned against a tree, his gaze fixed on the pair by the fountain. His jaw tightened as he watched Carly laugh at something Williams said.
Bella noticed his expression and nudged him with her elbow. “You’re not very subtle, you know.”
James frowned. “What are you talking about?”
Bella rolled her eyes. “Oh, come on. You’ve been staring at Carly like a lovesick puppy for weeks now. It’s obvious.”
James sighed, running a hand through his hair. “It doesn’t matter. She’s clearly into Williams.”
“Does Williams know?” Bella asked, tilting her head.
James shook his head. “I don’t think so. And even if he does, it’s not like he’d do anything about it. He’s not that kind of guy.”
Bella studied him for a moment, then shrugged. “Well, you won’t know unless you talk to her.”
“It’s not that simple,” James muttered.
“Nothing ever is,” Bella replied, her tone softer. “But that doesn’t mean you should just sit here and mope. If you care about her, you owe it to yourself to at least try.”

Later that evening, the team gathered in their usual spot—a cozy corner of the library that had become their unofficial headquarters. Peter was poring over a book of spells, his mind focused on finding anything that could give them an edge against the next threat.
Carly and Williams sat across from him, reviewing a map of the surrounding areas. Bella was flipping through a journal, while James hovered nearby, his tension palpable.
“Are we going to talk about the elephant in the room?” Bella asked suddenly, breaking the silence.
Peter looked up, confused. “What elephant?”
Bella smirked, gesturing toward Carly and Williams. “That one.”
Carly’s cheeks turned crimson, and Williams frowned. “What are you talking about, Bella?”
“Oh, don’t play dumb,” Bella said, leaning back in her chair. “The two of you have been acting all weird and awkward around each other lately. It’s obvious something’s going on.”
Carly opened her mouth to protest, but James beat her to it. “Maybe it’s because someone can’t keep their feelings to themselves,” he snapped, his gaze fixed on Williams.
Williams blinked, taken aback. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You know exactly what I mean,” James said, his voice rising.
“Whoa, calm down,” Peter interjected, standing up. “What’s going on here?”
James ignored him, his frustration boiling over. “You act like you don’t notice, but it’s clear as day. Carly likes you, and you’re just stringing her along.”
“James, stop!” Carly said, her voice shaking.
Williams frowned, his expression darkening. “I’m not stringing anyone along. And even if Carly does feel that way, it’s not your business.”
“It is my business!” James shot back. “Because I care about her!”
The room fell silent, James’s words hanging in the air like a storm cloud. Carly stared at him, her eyes wide, while Peter and Bella exchanged uneasy glances.
“James…” Carly began, but he cut her off.
“I’m sorry,” he said, his voice quieter now. “I just… I can’t stand by and watch this happen.”
Williams sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Look, James, I don’t know what you’re trying to prove, but this isn’t the time or place for this conversation.”
“Then when is the right time?” James demanded.
“Enough!” Peter’s voice rang out, startling everyone. “We have bigger things to deal with than this. If you two want to sort out your feelings, do it later. Right now, we need to focus on the team.”
James clenched his fists, but he didn’t argue. Instead, he turned and stormed out of the library, leaving an awkward silence in his wake.

Later that night, Carly found James sitting alone on the steps outside the dorms. She hesitated before approaching, her heart heavy.
“Hey,” she said softly, sitting down beside him.
He didn’t look at her. “I’m sorry for what I said back there. I didn’t mean to cause a scene.”
Carly shook her head. “It’s not your fault. I should’ve been honest with you.”
James glanced at her, his eyes filled with sadness. “Do you like him?”
She paused, unsure of how to answer. “I don’t know,” she admitted. “Williams is a great guy, but… I don’t think it’s like that. Not really.”
James looked away, his shoulders slumping.
“You mean a lot to me, James,” Carly continued. “But I need time to figure things out. Can you give me that?”
He nodded reluctantly. “Yeah. I can do that.”

As the team tried to find their footing again, the tension lingered, unspoken but palpable. They had faced monsters and magic, but their greatest challenge might just be
learning to navigate their own hearts. And as the days passed, it became clear that this storm wasn’t over yet.
