Shadow of power

The next morning, the hideout buzzed with quiet activity. Peter sat at the table, scribbling notes on a piece of paper while James leaned against the counter, staring at nothing in particular. Carly flipped through her book of spells, her lips moving as she muttered incantations. Bella, sharpening her blade, shot a glance at Lucian, who stood at the window, watching the streets below.

“We need to figure out our next move,” Peter said, breaking the silence.

“And fast,” Bella added. “That scarred man isn’t going to sit around waiting for us to catch up.”

Lucian turned to face them, his expression unreadable. “He’s after something bigger. Whatever it is, we need to find out before he does.”

Carly hesitated, her fingers tracing the edge of her spellbook. “There’s something else,” she said softly. “During my trance, I saw... something.”

Everyone turned to her.

“What did you see?” Peter asked.

Carly took a deep breath. “It wasn’t just about the scarred man. It was about us. There’s a connection between us and him, something deeper than we realize.” Her gaze shifted to Lucian. “And you... there’s something about you I can’t quite piece together yet.”

Lucian’s jaw tightened, but he said nothing.

“Great,” James muttered. “More mysteries.”

Peter stood up, his voice firm. “We’ll figure it out. But right now, we need to focus. Carly, can you trace him?”

Carly nodded. “I’ll try. But it won’t be easy. His magic is... different. It’s like he’s drawing from multiple sources.”

“Then we split up,” Peter said. “Carly, focus on tracking him. Bella and James, secure supplies and make sure we’re prepared for anything. Lucian and I will dig into his history—find out who he is and what he’s really after.”

Lucian raised an eyebrow. “You’re giving orders now?”

Peter shot him a look. “Unless you have a better idea.”

Lucian smirked. “Fine. Let’s see what you’ve got.”

\---

Peter and Lucian headed to the city archives, a sprawling underground facility filled with dusty records and forgotten histories. The air was cool and heavy with the scent of aged paper.

“Why do I feel like we’re looking for a needle in a haystack?” Lucian muttered as they sifted through documents.

“Because we probably are,” Peter replied.

They worked in silence for a while, the only sounds the rustling of pages and the faint hum of the overhead lights.

Eventually, Lucian spoke up. “You’re different.”

Peter glanced at him. “What do you mean?”

Lucian shrugged, not looking up from the file he was reading. “Since you came back from college. You’re more... focused. More confident.”

Peter hesitated. “A lot happened while I was away. I learned things about myself, about my magic.”

“Like what?”

Peter hesitated again, then decided to be honest. “Like the fact that I’m not just human. I’m a wizard of Hoods.”

Lucian froze, his eyes narrowing. “What did you just say?”

Peter met his gaze. “I didn’t want to believe it at first, but it’s true. My powers, my connection to the Hoods—it’s in my blood.”

Lucian stared at him for a long moment, then shook his head. “This just keeps getting better and better.”

Before Peter could respond, Carly’s voice crackled through the communicator. “Guys, I found him. He’s moving toward the old industrial district. Meet me there.”

\---

The team regrouped at the industrial district, a sprawling wasteland of abandoned factories and crumbling warehouses. The air was heavy with the scent of rust and decay, and the faint hum of distant machinery echoed through the empty streets.

Carly pointed to a dilapidated building in the distance. “He’s in there. I can feel it.”

“Then let’s move,” Peter said.

As they approached the building, a sudden chill ran through the air. Shadows seemed to shift and dance around them, and a low, menacing growl echoed through the darkness.

“Something’s not right,” Bella said, gripping her blade tightly.

Before anyone could respond, the shadows exploded into motion. Night creatures swarmed from the darkness, their glowing eyes and sharp fangs glinting in the dim light.

“Here we go again,” James muttered, his hands glowing with magic.

The battle was fierce, but the team fought with a unity they hadn’t felt in a long time. Peter and Lucian worked together seamlessly, their magic weaving in perfect harmony. Carly provided support from a distance, disrupting the creatures with her spells, while Bella and James took down the enemies up close.

Despite their strength, the creatures kept coming, their numbers seemingly endless.

“We can’t keep this up forever!” Bella shouted.

“Just hold on!” Peter replied, his magic surging as he unleashed a powerful blast that sent several creatures flying.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the last of the creatures fell, dissolving into shadows.

The team regrouped, panting and battered but alive.

“Is everyone okay?” Peter asked.

“Define ‘okay,’” James said, wiping blood from a cut on his forehead.

Before anyone could respond, the scarred man’s voice echoed through the air.

“Well done. I must admit, I’m impressed.”

They turned to see him standing atop a pile of rubble, his scarred face twisted into a cruel smile.

“You’ve grown stronger,” he said. “But it won’t be enough.”

Peter stepped forward, his voice steady. “We’ll see about that.”

The scarred man chuckled. “Oh, I’m not here to fight. Not yet. I just wanted to introduce myself properly.”

He raised his hands, and the shadows around him seemed to ripple and shift, forming into a towering figure with glowing blue eyes.

“This is Lucian’s father,” the scarred man said, his voice filled with dark amusement. “And soon, he’ll be your end.”

The figure stepped forward, its presence radiating power and malice.

Lucian’s face was unreadable, but his fists clenched tightly.

Peter glanced at him. “Lucian—”

“I know,” Lucian said quietly. “We’ll deal with it.”

The scarred man laughed. “Good luck. You’ll need it.” With that, he vanished, leaving the team standing in the rubble, the weight of their new enemy pressing down on them.

Peter looked at his friends, determination burning in his eyes. “We’ve

faced worse. We’ll get through this. Together.”
