Chapter 28 27

Chapter 28 27
Chapter TwentySeven

Soleil
"I don't know where to start," He paused, sighing deeply like he needed the air so much right now. "Or how."
I pursed my lips as I watched him collect himself. He looked bothered, unruly, and lost. And I know--I can feel it--I know his mind goes back to everything that happened.
He doesn't know how to give me answers without reliving the memories he had.
I should feel remorse towards him. I wanted to tell him that it's okay, that he doesn't need to tell me.
But I can't.
I wanted this. I want to know.
But I also understand him.
"Maybe just narrow it down to the things I think I deserve to know about."
He chuckled without humor. "There's no narrowing down this thing, princess." He looked at me, a smug smirk plastered on his face.
The blank pit I saw in his eyes brought me shivers.
Cold. He looked at me with those cold eyes, the browns almost got waved off by a shade darker.
I looked away before my tail got tucked deep between my ass cheeks. Damn. Quillon looks scary when he is like this.
Ignoring the way I trembled inside, I cleared my throat and continued.
"I only needed to know who's chasing you and why."
"Needed." He echoed, arching a brow.
"Needed. Wanted. Whatever. Everything that isn't related to who and why, you don't have to tell me."
"Well, isn't that gratifying." He said sarcastically, but I noticed how his shoulders relaxed.
"Go on," I grabbed some food and shoved it in my mouth just to prove that I wasn't buying his sarcasm. "My ears are all yours."
"Stop talking when your mouth is full, princess. Very unladylike."
"Stop stalling, Kill. Not very manly."
"Don't call me that."
He rolled his eyes and when he smiled, the color of his eyes was back, and finally, finally, I relaxed.
He started eating, too, and though I know he was stalling again, I gave him time.
"I don't know if you'll believe me, but I was being hunted by the Alpha King, Zeron," He started after chewing his food.
"I figured it just right..." My inner thoughts started thinking about the whys, barely having the patience to wait for him to say it.
"You figured?" He asked and my mind snapped out of its forming bubble.
Shit. Did I say it loud?
"Huh?" I blinked, feigning ignorance.
"You said you figured it just right. That, what, the AK was the one after me? You figured that out?"
His eyes narrowed as he looked at me with a frown. He's dubious. Heck, I would, too.
Fucking mouth. I thought I had outgrown this part of me where I speak my mind!
I snorted and I almost choked on my own saliva. I grabbed the glass of water and took a sip, which only intensified the doubt in Quillon's face.
"Don't be silly. I wouldn't even guess that! I kept thinking that it must be someone with a higher rank or something. Otherwise, you wouldn't run so much like you're doing."
"You don't know how much running I've done."
"Fine! I don't know that, too. Stop baiting me, okay? I don't know shit about you, that's why I was asking."
"Your mumbled words made me doubt you. Blame me."
Here he goes being sarcastic again.
"Then, I'm sorry I speak my mind sometimes, but I honestly don't know your truths. I just happen to have a mind of my own that creates its own thoughts. You expect me to run away with you from someone I don't know to somewhere without even thinking of why's and who's? I'm not a robot, Quillon." I pointed at my temple. "This is working."
He looked at me for long seconds before he shook his head.
"You talk a lot."
I rolled my eyes. "A working, functioning mind is to blame. Now, continue where we left off. Why is the Alpha King Zeron hunting you?"
I wanted to ask who he was to be hunted but stopped myself. Why? I don't know.
Maybe I was scared to know him too well.
But I'll be hearing more about him, anyway, and I should just stick to that. I'm too eager for my own good in knowing more.
Quillon took his time chewing his food without breaking eye contact and I swear the nerves on my temples moved in irritation.
"Eat your food. I'll talk." He commanded and though my brow arched from his tone--that I'll never get used to--I did continue eating.
He sighed after my first chew and started talking.
"I was born with a gift but my gift was different than any other werewolf who was blessed." He paused, thinking carefully for his next words.
'What's your gift and what's so important with it that my father kept wanting to get a hold of you?' Was my thought but I remained waiting, making sure my tongue won't disconnect with my mind this time.
"Before I was born, Zeron sensed my gift. He tracked down my parents and during that time, my mother was in the middle of a crisis. She needed help, and the only solution--her only cure--was the power of the Alpha King."
"Zeron wanted my power, Soleil. That is the answer to your why. When he helped my parents...healed my mother out of a curse, he didn't do it for free. He made a deal with my father that in return for my mother's cure, he would take my power. I was unborn at that time, an innocent fetus inside my mother's womb. My father agreed after making sure there won't be any harm done to me."
Quillon paused but I couldn't wait.
"Did he succeed?" I asked, cutting his thoughts off.
"He thought he did."
I frowned. "What?"
"He only sucked a small amount of my power and he thought he took it all. He cured my mom, the deal was done, and he went away."
"I don't get it," I said in a whisper. "If he thought he did, then why is he still hunting you now?"
He shrugged. "He found out he didn't have it all. That's all we could think of as his reason. My power, Zeron could detect it whenever I use it and it's his way of tracking me down. I grew up hiding my power, concealing it because I had to. When I was fifteen, I met a wounded guard of my old pack and I used my power to heal him. It..." He paused to clear his throat and I saw a glimpse of sadness in his eyes before it was burned by wrath. Or hatred, I couldn't say.
"I've said enough." He pushed away from the table, giving more space between us. His eyes never looked at mine and I never felt this strong urge to have someone look at me the way I do now.
I want to see him. See through him.
"But--"
"You know the who and the why now, Soleil. The rest doesn't need to feed your curiosity."
I know he's right but I just wanted more. I want to know what my father did, and why my father did it. There's no way I would be asking my father that, and he would never tell me the truth anyway.
But maybe Quillon would.
"I still don't get it. What does the Alpha King need from you? What do you have to have this much of his effort and attention? That's Zeron! He's the Alpha King! What's so special about you--"
"Special?" He snapped his head and faced me.
I know I wanted to have him look at me but fuck if those eyes won't be enough to cut my throat.
The wrath he had upon remembering his past was now straight at me! It was too much that my mouth shut, and my body got numb. The aura he emits was hovering over me and the intent to kill he has right now... Damn Father, what have you done?
"There's nothing special about me, Soleil. It wasn't an honor to be on the Alpha King's radar; it was a curse! For eight years, I couldn't count the werewolves I put in danger just by being by my side! I'm the reason why my parents were imprisoned in who-knows-where! I'm the reason why my Shade and Kat have no parents because Zeron took them away, too! I'm not special, I'm the fucking curse!"
He slammed his hand on the table so hard that the plate fell off it, crashing loudly on the floor. My body jumped in surprise and horror.
I could feel myself trembling, and it wasn't just because of his rage.
The things my father did... What Zeron did to Quillon and the people he cared about. It horrified me.
It must be years. Years of running and dodging bullets for Quillon.
Alone.
He was all alone.
And hurting.
None of us moved for a minute until Quillon decided to dash out of the cabin, slamming the door behind him as he went away.
'I could feel his pain... He's not angry towards us, he's hurting.' My wolf told me as if she thought she needed to comfort me.
It didn't work.
I wasn't comforted by the thought that he was not angry with me, because if he found out whose daughter I am, his fury would be the last thing I should worry about.
My father was the reason behind his pain.
And I know I shouldn't feel guilty but I do. I feel guilty for the sins of my father. I couldn't think of a good reason why Zeron was doing this to Quillon.
Because there's no good reason.
The guilt I was feeling made me make up my mind.
I want to help. Whatever damage my father did, I can't go back and fix it, but I wanted to help Quillon.
I just don't know how.
