Chapter 106
Chapter 106
Amara’s POV.
After learning that my suspicions about Samael’s confessions were confirmed by what I saw in Wilson’s daughter’s letter about Axel, I discreetly glanced at my two trusted friends. I didn’t want to jump to negative conclusions, but I felt suspicious when Masha seemed irritated when I mentioned I wanted to get Samael out. That’s when I casually brought up the possibility of a traitor among us.
Masha almost played along perfectly, except for one thing. She never asked in a disrespectful manner. She always had a dislike for questioning others’ sincerity because she felt it was disrespectful. That was just who she was. Among the three of us, she was the most disciplined and had better self-control. I didn’t know who was standing in front of me, but one thing was certain – she wasn’t Masha. But how?
Little did I know that the confusion I had been grappling with for days would soon be resolved after discovering the location of the Reprobatus clan.
The picture I had stumbled upon in our old house provided a clue. I needed to open the cabinet that had been in Axel’s house when his mother was still alive.
I was preparing for the mission tonight, gathering the necessary items when my phone vibrated. I raised an eyebrow upon seeing Damien’s name on the caller ID. I didn’t answer. This was all part of the plan. They wanted us to have a misunderstanding, so I was playing into their hands.
“Well, aren’t I too nice?” I muttered to myself.
“Stop praising yourself!” Ruby interrupted me with an annoyed tone.
A message from Damien popped up, catching my attention again.
“Why aren’t you picking up my calls? Don’t forget about dinner with my parents tonight.”
My stomach dropped as I read the message. Oh, right. How could I have forgotten about dinner with his parents tonight? He had mentioned it the other day, but amidst my busy schedule, it must have slipped my mind.
“Here goes nothing,” I whispered.
I had to get everything done before dinner. But unfortunately, things didn’t go as smoothly as I’d hoped.
With a stroke of luck, I was able to evade Damien’s interrogation. I carefully observed him, noticing his deep breaths and peaceful slumber. I slowly sat down and stared at his face to see if he was truly asleep. I couldn’t help but smile.
He was incredibly handsome, and my feelings for him never wavered. If only I could express them openly right now, but the circumstances prevented me from doing so. I hoped that somehow, he could feel my emotions. From then until now, he remained handsome in my eyes.
“Be careful. You don’t want to get caught in a compromising situation,” Ruby whispered.
I rolled my eyes in secret. “You always know how to ruin the moment, Ruby.”
With a sigh, I rose from the bed and made my way to the kitchen to brew some coffee. Afterward, before going back to our room, I peeked at my two children on their bed while carrying the warm cup in my hands.
Seeing them serenely sleeping, I quietly left their room and entered the master bedroom to check on Damien, who was still soundly asleep. He must have been exhausted from responding to the consecutive attacks on different parts of Alvinia.
I sat on the small sofa in our room, positioned near the balcony, and took out the book I had discovered in the cabinet along with the broken amulet. Speaking of the amulet, I needed to know its purpose. I might pay a visit to Ogla tomorrow.
My brow furrowed as I saw several pages with poems written on them, seemingly serving as a diary of its previous owner. At the back of the book, there were dark spells written.
I wasn’t good at reading spells, despite being a witch myself. I had never fully embraced or honed my abilities and powers as a witch. Instead, my skills as a wolf were the only ones I had developed.
“I chose darkness as my comfort zone,” I read the haunting words inscribed in the book.
Axel… What was the story behind? What was the purpose of all of this?
“When pain consumed my soul, I embraced it until there was no soul left to feel the pain.”
I closed the book as I felt a heavy weight settle in my chest from the words I had just read.
Did this mean that he willingly accepted his fate to be like this? Did he accept his own downfall, sacrificing his own life for a power he knew would lead to his destruction from the beginning? Why had he set himself on this path? Why did he make this choice?
I had believed that we were finally okay. If I hadn’t found out, if I hadn’t been plagued by restlessness about things, would I have unknowingly fallen into his trap?
I let out a sigh and slumped back against the sofa, closing my eyes tightly, trying to clear my mind.
“What do we do now, Amara?” Ruby asked.
“I’m not sure, Ruby. We need to come up with a plan.”
“Since his plan is to separate you from Damien and have him return to you, why not show him that we’re on his side until we can figure out what’s going on? Try to befriend him, but get even closer.”
I nodded, considering her suggestion. It seemed like a risky move, but it might be our best shot at uncovering this mystery.
“Do you think Natasha is involved too?” I asked.
“It’s definitely possible. Think about it. She appeared out of nowhere, right after Axel. There’s something fishy going on.”
We both fell into a contemplative silence. I let out a tired sigh and stared blankly at the ceiling above. My eyes remained open, but they felt heavy. The weariness etched into my eyes revealed just how much these revelations had come crashing into my life, especially from the most unexpected sources.
“But first, we need to figure out the purpose of that necklace we found,” I said. “I have a feeling it’s connected to Masha’s disappearance.”
I had been right. After visiting Ogla, we learned that the amulet had the power to copy anyone’s face. It was a breakthrough, but it also raised a new question.
Who was the one wearing Masha’s face as a disguise? Who was the imposter pretending to be her?
To find out, I needed Astra to perform some magic.
A few rings echoed through the phone before she reluctantly answered my call.
“What?!”
Her voice came through, loud and irritated, making me wince and instinctively hold the phone slightly away from my ear. Did she really have to shout like that?
Not letting her tone deter me, I greeted her sarcastically, “Hello, bitch.”
I could practically hear her groan on the other end. “Amara, you pain in the ass! I’m still half asleep. Don’t tell me you need something again? We just finished that other thing the other day. I swear, I’m going to punch you.”
I chuckled. “Well, I hate to break it to you, but I need you to do something.”
It was always entertaining to push her buttons.
“Ugh, what is it this time?” she asked, annoyed.
I took a moment to lean against the bathroom door. Before I left, I needed to settle all my plans. Of course, with the help of Remi, Astra, Axel, and Samael.
“Can you break into Natasha’s house? I need you to retrieve a yellow gemstone and a strand of that bitch’s hair.”
Remi grumbled in response, not thrilled with the task. But I knew she would come through for me. She always did.
“What yellow gemstone? Give me more details, you idiot!” she snapped.
“Samael mentioned it’s engraved with a crescent moon and cross symbol at the top. It’s called the refining stone, and it’s one of the sources of Natasha and Axel’s power,” I explained, relaying the information I had gathered from Samael. “He’ll help distract her by playing with the pups outside. While Natasha is preoccupied with trying to make Damien mad at me, you take the opportunity to retrieve the stone. Just keep an eye on the kids for me. I don’t want to kill that bitch right now.”
“Fine, I’ll do it. But you owe me big time, Amara,” she warned.
I grinned. “Thanks. I’ll make it up to you, I promise.”
I heard her stir from her bed. “And what about you?” she asked.
I raised an eyebrow. “I’ll be out of town for a few days. But first, I need to come up with an excuse to distance myself from Damien.”
“Just have a fight with him. You’re pretty good at that,” she suggested, knowing my knack for arguments.
That’s only partly true.
I laughed. “That’s definitely an option.”
The following day, I put my plan into motion and everything seemed to be going according to plan as Damien caught sight of me with Axel after we completed a race.
After finishing my conversation with Odessa, I let her pack her things. I stole a quick glance her way as she busied herself with packing before picking up my phone and unlocking it, only to find a flurry of missed calls and text messages from Damien. I decided to ignore them for now and instead scrolled my finger to dial Remi’s number.
“Remi,” I greeted her.
“Hey!” came her reply, though I could hear a lot of noise in the background.
“What’s all that noise? Are you running or something?” I asked, puzzled.
“Yes! Astra asked me to spy on this guy named Raoul,” she explained, sounding out of breath.
My pupils dilated in astonishment, struggling to come to terms with the words that had just been uttered.
“Come again?”
“Astra asked me to watch over a certain individual named Raoul,” she repeated. “She followed Masha’s impostor to a hotel, and when someone came out of the room Masha went into, it turned out to be this guy. She sneaked into his room in the hotel, but there was no one there, so she suspects he’s the one impersonating our friend. She did some digging and found out his name is Raoul.”
I blinked, my mind trying to take in her explanation, the shock of the information settling in. I could hardly believe what I had heard, and laughter spilled out of me as I realized the absurdity of it all. What a small world we lived in.
“I think I’ve heard his name before. I just can’t remember where,” I heard the confusion in Remi’s voice.
Leaving Odessa to continue in the middle of packing, I stepped outside and found a spot on a large rock in front of her house. I settled down and continued my conversation with Remi.
“Yes, I’m pretty sure you’ve heard about him before. I mentioned him to you in the past. He’s Axel’s former butler who turned into a psychopath. He killed and raped hundreds of innocent children before my father captured him,” I explained to her, the memories of those dark times resurfacing.
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line, and I could hear her quick breaths before she spoke again.
“Yeah, I remember now. Look! He entered a bar, and when he came out, he was accompanied by a prostitute. Your grandfather is quite the character,” she commented.
She couldn’t resist making a joke.
“Just keep monitoring him for now. I’ll deal with him when I come back,” I instructed.
“Noted.”
