Chapter 44 CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR

Chapter 44 CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR
Sera

I locked eyes with the wild animal

It seemed to be thinking, calculating something in its big head, when suddenly, it moved faster than I thought possible.

I stepped back, barely jumping away from its claws when I heard a sound from behind. Another wolf attacked, and I slashed my knife through the air, begging for some damage.

The wolf caught it with its teeth easily and flung it away. I fell down, my gown tripping me as the tears finally fell.

This was it. I was going to die, mailed by a bunch of wild wolves.

I stretched my hand out. It was shaking, hazy through the curtain of tears, pointing it towards the wolves.

Please, I begged the moon goddess. Please help me now.

Nothing happened. The wolves ran, their mouths open, ready to kill me and I screamed, my eyes as tight as they could.

A soft whimper cuts through the air. I opened my eyes, blinking as I saw the body of the first wolf on the ground, whimpering in pain. There was a large gash on its belly, blood rushing out from there and I stared at it in shock.

I did it.

I finally did it.

“Hello,” someone said from behind me. I turned my head sharply, only to see a hand in front of my face. Theron.

He bent down and picked me up without another word, and then blurred.

I closed my eyes. My hands were still shaking, my heart still racing. I almost died, if not for him. I could have died. He suddenly stopped and I opened my eyes, seeing we were inside the castle.

He pushed a small door open, leading to a room with a white coat that smelt way too clean. As he dropped me on the bed, the door flew open and Althea rushed in, Dante and Caspian by her heels.

“What happened here?” Caspian asked him, rushing to my side.

“I overheard her talking with Dorian so I thought it was best I put an eye on them,” Theron answered. “I followed them out to the woods.”

Caspian’s face turned white. “The woods? Why would Dorian take her there?”

“He said something about her unlocking her potential under pressure,” Theron explained.

My throat is raw, my side still hurting. “Let me see,” Althea said, lifting my hand away from where it hurt. She touched it, and the pain went straight to my brain, still I didn't make a single noise.

I almost died. Because I was the fucking catalyst, I was almost mauled to death by wolves. And Dorian’s words, me handling myself under pressure.

Wasn't he from the North? Lucian had told me something, to be on guard. Was this what it was?

The cold snapped me out of my thoughts. I looked at the door, knowing who was coming already, his ice announcing him. Lucian opened the door casually, his face straight.

I pushed Althea’s hand off me. Standing on shaky legs, I walked up to the cold king, stopping him.

He stared down at me, those blue hooded eyes, his lips tightened in straight line.

This fucking bastard. “You sent him,” I hissed. I raised my hand up, slapping him hard across the face, equals and gasps coming from behind me. “i know it was you,” I shouted.

Lucian’s face is red, my imprint on his cheeks but he said nothing. “Why do you think it was him,Sera?” Caspian asked from behind.

“Theron,” Dante interrupted. “This matter is not between the kings and the Catalyst. You can stay.”

Theron nodded and bowed. “My Lords,” he said, leaving the room.

The sound of the door clicked behind him, yet I couldn't take my eyes of Lucian. How could he?

“Whatever happened was for your own good,” Lucian said coldly.

“My own good?” I snapped. “I almost died.”

“And in case you have forgotten, you are a fucking catalyst,” Lucian screamed back. “If you cannot protect yourself from a mere wolf attack, how would you be able to break the curse?”

The curse?

The room was silent, and I looked back at Dante and Caspian. They looked at me, their eyes passing the same message.

They agreed with him.

“Maybe I don't want to break your curse,” I replied quietly, facing Lucian. “Maybe I don't care about your curses, that is why I cannot access my powers. And why should I, eh? The day you announce that I have your protection, that is the same day you try to have me killed all for some curse?”

I stared at all of them. They were quiet, Lucin looking at me with cold rage, Dante’s head bowed while Caspian looked exhausted.

“If you were the one in my place, would you want to help a king that almost risked your life for a curse?”

I pushed Lucian out of the way, brushing past him. “Sera,” Althea called but I didn't look back, swinging the door open and walking out of the infirmary.

They deserved to burn. I would not stand for this one more second. No, I was going to run away from here, as soon as I could.

And by the goddess, I hope their curse kills them.
