The Price of Betrayal
Silence.
For the first time in her life, Sophia Moretti felt powerless.
The gunshot still echoed in her ears. The metallic scent of blood filled the warehouse.
But all she could see...
Was Ethan.
On the ground.
Bleeding.
His breathing was ragged, uneven. His hand trembled as he pressed it to the wound in his chest, his fingers coated in deep crimson.
His lips parted, but no sound came out.
Sophia couldn’t move.
Not toward him. Not away.
Because this wasn’t how it was supposed to go.
This wasn’t his bullet.
This wasn’t his war.
And yet...
Here he was.
Falling because of her.
A shaky breath escaped her lips. Her fingers twitched around the gun still in her grip.
The world blurred, voices becoming distant, shadows shifting around her.
Then, slowly...
Her eyes lifted.
And she looked at Marco.
Marco wasn’t breathing.
Or at least, it felt that way.
Because Ethan wasn’t supposed to be on the ground.
He wasn’t supposed to be bleeding out in Sophia’s arms.
And yet...
Here they were.
Sophia’s expression was unreadable. But her eyes...
They were the coldest thing he had ever seen.
Marco’s pulse pounded in his ears.
It wasn’t me.
He wanted to say it.
Wanted to scream it.
But the look on Sophia’s face?
She had already decided.
He was the enemy now.
And nothing he said would change that.
His hands clenched into fists at his sides. He had spent his entire life at Sophia’s side.
And now?
Now she looked at him as if he was already dead.
Serena stepped back.
The moment she saw Ethan go down, the moment Sophia stopped breathing...
She knew.
Everything had just changed.
Sophia Moretti wasn’t just a queen losing her grip on power anymore.
She was a woman who had just lost the only person she had ever let in.
And that?
That was more dangerous than anything.
Her heart pounded. She had known war was coming.
But she hadn’t expected it to start like this.
A glance at Marco told her he knew it too.
His face was pale, his body stiff, his eyes locked on Sophia.
This wasn’t a power play anymore.
This wasn’t a battle for control.
This was personal.
And that meant...
Marco wasn’t walking out of this alive.
Unless...
Serena’s gaze flicked toward the shadows. Toward the exit.
She had seconds to decide.
Stay? And risk being caught between Sophia’s wrath and Marco’s fall.
Or leave? And make sure she still had a chance to take the throne once the blood settled.
Her choice?
Was already made.
The only thing Sophia could hear was her own breathing.
Slow. Controlled.
Deadly.
Ethan wasn’t supposed to fall for her.
Ethan wasn’t supposed to be the one bleeding on the floor.
This wasn’t how the war was supposed to start.
And now?
Now, she was done playing games.
Her fingers curled tighter around her gun as she lifted it.
Pointed it at Marco.
A muscle in his jaw twitched.
But he didn’t beg.
Didn’t move.
Didn’t try to explain.
Because he knew.
There was no explaining.
Not after this.
Sophia tilted her head slightly. "You should run, Marco."
His expression didn’t change. "And if I don’t?"
Sophia’s lips barely parted.
"Then you die here."
Silence.
A long, stretched moment where nothing moved...
Then...
Marco moved first.
The second he lunged, Sophia fired.
The shot barely missed, the bullet grazing his side. But he didn’t stop.
Because if he did, she wouldn’t miss the second time.
Sophia cursed, spinning as Marco bolted toward the exit.
"STOP HIM!" she shouted.
The warehouse exploded into motion.
Men lunged for Marco, but he was faster.
He slammed into one of Sophia’s guards, sending the man crashing into a stack of crates.
Another guard drew his weapon...
But before he could fire, Marco ripped the gun from his grip, knocking him out with a brutal elbow strike.
His ribs screamed in pain. His breath was coming too fast.
But he didn’t stop.
Because if he stopped, he was dead.
The exit was only a few feet away...
Then...
A gunshot roared.
Marco barely had time to move before a bullet ripped through his shoulder.
Pain exploded through him.
His vision blurred, the ground tilting beneath him.
He hit the pavement outside, barely managing to stay conscious.
But he couldn’t stop.
Not now.
Gritting his teeth, he forced himself forward.
And then...
The darkness swallowed him whole.
Sophia stood at the warehouse doors, her gun still smoking.
Marco had escaped.
Barely.
But this?
This wasn’t over.
She turned, looking at Ethan... still on the ground, his breathing ragged, his face pale.
She had lost too much tonight.
Too many battles. Too many pieces.
No more.
Her fingers curled into fists.
She looked at her men.
"When you find him," she said, her voice cold, "bring him to me."
The guards nodded, already moving.
Sophia exhaled slowly, her hands still shaking.
Because the next time she saw Marco?
She wouldn’t miss.
She would end this.
For good.
As Sophia turned back to Ethan, kneeling beside him, her mind still raced.
The war had started.
But it wasn’t just Marco.
It was Serena.
It was the mafia families.
And it was herself.
Because for the first time, she wasn’t sure if she was still the one in control.
And that?
That was the most dangerous thing of all.
