The Cost of Betrayal
Betrayal wasn’t new to Sophia Moretti.
But Marco’s betrayal?
That was something else entirely.
The man who had stood beside her.
The man who had carried out her orders without hesitation.
The man she trusted.
And now?
Now, he was standing on Matteo’s side.
Sophia didn’t move. Didn’t let the rage show.
Instead, she exhaled slowly and reached for her whiskey glass, taking a sip as if this was just another business meeting.
Matteo watched her carefully.
Sophia could see it in his eyes.
Doubt.
He thought she would snap, would make a mistake.
But Sophia Moretti didn’t make mistakes.
She made enemies regret theirs.
She set the glass down gently and looked at Marco.
"Close the door, Marco," she murmured.
A small test.
A final chance.
Marco hesitated.
That was all the proof Sophia needed.
Marco hadn’t expected this to be easy.
Turning against Sophia Moretti wasn’t something a man did lightly.
For years, he had stood by her side. Fought for her. Killed for her.
And now, he was standing against her.
Not because he hated her.
Not because he wanted to.
But because he thought she was losing control.
Matteo’s voice had been so damn convincing.
"She’s slipping, Marco. You see it, don’t you?"
"You know what happens to rulers who refuse to adapt. They burn their own empires to the ground."
Marco hadn’t wanted to believe it.
But in the past few months, he had seen the cracks.
Sophia’s war with Vasari. Her obsession with control. The way she cut off alliances instead of making new ones.
Marco wasn’t a traitor.
He was a realist.
And he had made a choice.
One he wasn’t sure he could walk back from.
Ethan hadn’t moved.
But Sophia could feel him.
Tense. Calculating.
Waiting for her signal.
But she wasn’t ready to strike yet.
Not when she didn’t know Marco’s true reasoning.
So she leaned back in her chair, keeping her voice even.
"Tell me, Matteo," she murmured. "What exactly did you offer him?"
Matteo exhaled, sipping his drink leisurely.
"A future," he said simply.
Sophia arched a brow.
"That’s vague."
Matteo smirked. "And yet, effective."
He turned to Marco. "Go on. Tell her."
Marco’s jaw tightened.
He didn’t look at Sophia.
Didn’t meet her gaze.
Instead, his voice was low, steady.
"I didn’t want to do this, Sophia."
Sophia exhaled, still calm. "And yet, here we are."
Marco finally met her gaze.
"You’re too obsessed with revenge," he said.
Sophia blinked once.
"Revenge?"
Marco’s jaw clenched. "Your war against Vasari. Your need to control everything."
Sophia exhaled.
"Marco," she said quietly. "I built this empire. You think I did that by being merciful?"
Marco shook his head.
"You built it. But you’re also going to burn it down."
Silence.
Matteo leaned forward, smiling.
"You see, Moretti? Even your most loyal men are starting to realize it."
Sophia tilted her head slightly.
"Tell me something, Marco," she murmured. "Do you really believe Matteo and Vasari have your best interests at heart?"
Marco hesitated.
Then... he nodded.
Sophia finally smiled.
Slow. Dangerous.
"Then you’re a fool."
Ethan had been waiting.
He saw the way Marco’s hands twitched slightly at Sophia’s words.
The small hesitation. The doubt.
Which meant... he wasn’t fully convinced.
And that?
That was an opening.
Sophia saw it too.
Which was why she stood so smoothly, so effortlessly.
Matteo tensed slightly.
"You think I don’t see what you’re doing, Moretti?" he murmured.
Sophia exhaled.
"Oh, I know you see it," she said. "But it doesn’t matter."
She took one step closer to Marco.
"I want you to listen very carefully," she said softly.
"If you walk out that door with Matteo, I will not spare you."
Marco stiffened.
"You know me, Marco," Sophia continued. "You know what happens to people who betray me."
Silence.
Matteo chuckled. "Empty threats, Sophia?"
Sophia turned to him, her gaze ice-cold.
"You should hope so."
Because Sophia Moretti had never given an empty threat in her life.
And now?
She was about to prove it.
Matteo De Luca had spent weeks planning this moment.
He wasn’t the type of man who made impulsive moves. He played the long game, positioning his pieces before making a single decisive strike.
And this?
This was supposed to be his checkmate.
He had expected resistance.
Expected Sophia to lash out.
Maybe even expected Ethan to interfere.
But what he hadn’t expected... what made something in his gut twist uneasily.. was how calm she was.
Even now, with six armed men standing in the study, weapons drawn... Sophia Moretti didn’t flinch.
She wasn’t afraid.
She wasn’t panicked.
She was waiting.
Matteo clenched his jaw, masking his unease with a smirk.
"Looks like the odds aren’t in your favor, Moretti," he said smoothly.
Sophia exhaled, swirling the whiskey in her glass. "You always were bad at math, Matteo."
Ethan had been watching. Calculating.
He knew Matteo had planned this down to the last detail.
And yet... he had still underestimated Sophia.
Matteo thought bringing six armed men into this room gave him control.
What he didn’t realize... what Ethan did... was that power wasn’t about the number of bullets in the room.
It was about who controlled when they fired.
And Sophia Moretti?
She never let anyone else pull the trigger first.
Ethan’s gaze flicked to Marco.
He was stiff, shoulders tense. His eyes darted between Matteo’s men and Sophia, as if he was only just realizing...
He had backed the wrong side.
Ethan exhaled, his fingers tightening around the hilt of the knife inside his jacket.
Things were about to turn violent.
And he needed to be ready when they did.
Matteo took a slow step forward.
His men moved with him, shifting just slightly to block Sophia’s possible escape routes.
"You should know when you’ve lost, Moretti," he murmured.
Sophia smirked. "You’d think after all these years, you’d realize something about me, Matteo."
Matteo raised a brow.
Sophia exhaled.
"I don’t lose."
Matteo chuckled. "You will tonight."
Sophia’s smirk didn’t fade.
She took another sip of whiskey.
And pressed the button under her desk.
A soft click echoed through the room.
Then... the doors to the study slammed shut.
Matteo’s men immediately reacted.
One of them turned toward the door, reaching for the handle... only to find it locked.
Another shifted, raising his gun... but before he could move, the entire room was thrown into darkness.
Sophia exhaled, her voice cutting through the sudden chaos.
"You really thought I’d let you walk in here without a backup plan?"
Matteo cursed.
He hadn’t accounted for this.
A second later, the sound of gunfire exploded from outside the mansion.
It was distant at first... then closer.
The unmistakable sound of Sophia’s men engaging Matteo’s backup.
Inside the study, chaos broke loose.
Marco hadn’t moved.
He could hear his own heartbeat, pounding in his ears.
This was wrong.
This wasn’t how things were supposed to go.
Matteo had told him... promised him... that Sophia wouldn’t be ready for this.
That she was too obsessed with control to predict a direct attack.
And yet... here she was. Calm. Completely in control.
And Marco?
He had just put himself on the losing side.
The first shot came from Ethan.
Even in the dark, he moved with deadly precision.
A sharp grunt... one of Matteo’s men hit the floor, clutching his leg.
Matteo cursed. "Shoot them!"
The next few seconds were chaos.
Gunfire erupted. Muzzle flashes lit up the room in bursts of violent orange light.
Sophia didn’t move.
She didn’t need to.
Because she had already won.
The study doors burst open.
Moretti’s men stormed in.
Matteo’s men were outnumbered.
And now?
Now, they were trapped inside a house designed to be a fortress.
Matteo stumbled back, his mind racing.
How?
How had she known?
Had Marco warned her?
No... Marco was just as shocked as he was.
That meant... she had planned for this from the beginning.
Which meant...
Matteo had never had a chance.
His men were already losing.
Two were down. Another was disarmed, forced to his knees by one of Sophia’s men.
Sophia exhaled.
Then... she stood up.
The room went silent.
The gunfire outside continued, but in the study... it was over.
Matteo’s last two men dropped their weapons.
Surrendered.
Ethan stepped forward, his knife still in his hand, blood dripping from the edge.
Marco hadn’t moved.
Sophia slowly walked toward Matteo.
He was breathing hard, his eyes darting between her men, searching for a way out.
There was none.
Sophia exhaled.
"You really should have thought this through, Matteo."
Matteo clenched his jaw. "Kill me and you start a war."
Sophia smirked.
"You think I’m afraid of a war?"
Matteo had no answer.
Because the truth was... she wasn’t.
She leaned closer, voice dropping to a whisper.
"You underestimated me," she murmured. "And now you get to live with that regret."
Matteo’s hands clenched into fists.
But he said nothing.
Because he knew he had lost.
Sophia turned to Marco.
He was still standing there, his hands shaking just slightly.
Sophia studied him.
"Still think you made the right choice?" she asked.
Marco exhaled shakily.
"I…"
He looked around the room... at Matteo, at the men on their knees, at the sheer power Sophia still held.
Then... he slowly shook his head.
Sophia smirked.
"You were always smart, Marco."
She turned back to Matteo.
"But you weren’t."
Sophia stepped back, rolling her shoulders slightly.
Then, she turned to Ethan.
"Take him downstairs."
Matteo’s eyes widened just slightly.
He had expected her to kill him.
This?
This was worse.
Ethan smirked, stepping forward.
Matteo stiffened.
"Ethan," he growled.
Ethan shrugged. "What can I say? I like my job."
He grabbed Matteo by the collar, dragging him toward the door.
Matteo struggled, but it was useless.
Sophia took another sip of her whiskey.
Then... she exhaled.
Her voice was quiet, calm.
"You tried to take my empire from me, Matteo."
She set the glass down.
"Now I take everything from you."
Matteo’s rage finally cracked through.
"You think this is over?" he spat.
Sophia smirked.
"No, Matteo."
She turned away as Ethan pulled him through the door.
"This is just the beginning."
