Chapter 30 Assembled
Chapter 30 Assembled
Eric booked the briefing room at the end of the east corridor, which was smaller than the standard operations suite and didn't appear on the automated scheduling system that fed the daily logistics report. It held a table for eight, a wall screen, and a single window that looked out onto the equipment yard rather than the training grounds. Low visibility from the main building. Not a room people passed on their way to other things.
He sent the meeting requests individually, not through the group channel. Rafe first, then Tessa, then Martinez and Chen. Then Jin, then Soren and Leila. Becca last, with a note that her medical read on the team's current status would be useful.
He didn't explain the purpose in any of the requests.
They arrived within a four-minute window. Rafe came in first and took the chair to Eric's left without being directed to it. Tessa stood near the window until the room filled, then sat at the far end. Martinez and Chen arrived together, reading the room's tone correctly and settling without the usual prefatory conversation. Jin arrived with Soren and Leila and took the chair directly across from Eric, her implant running, feeds open. Becca came in last and sat closest to the door, her medical kit over one shoulder.
Nine people. The full assembled weight of what the past several weeks had built, gathered in a room that didn't appear on the logistics report, for a meeting that was technically authorized and structurally something else.
Eric stood at the head of the table and began.
He laid it out in order. The mission first, the authorization second, the operational structure third.
Lucien had authorized a priority operation to locate and capture the source of the mutant surge. Eric had been placed in personal charge of it, reporting directly to the Executive Director. Three-month window. The objective was identification, location, and extraction of the responsible party or parties. He told them he was assembling the best people available. That he needed both teams.
The room received this in the particular silence of people processing several things simultaneously. Martinez and Chen exchanged a glance that lasted less than a second. Tessa looked at the table surface. Rafe kept his eyes on Eric, steady, giving nothing away.
Jin spoke before anyone else.
"Why did you go to the Executive Director without first bringing the matter through intelligence channels?" She held his gaze across the table. "That means through me. An operation of this scope, built on surveillance data and pattern analysis, should have come through the recon division before it reached Lucien's office." She paused. "I want to understand why it didn't."
Not loud. Not personal. The room understood this because Jin's precision was legible to everyone who had worked alongside her. She was making a substantive point and making it in front of everyone because the answer belonged to everyone.
Eric met her eyes. "You're right."
Jin waited.
"The standard intelligence pathway had already been used and produced a response that closed the file. Taking the same information back through the same channel wasn't going to produce a different outcome." He held her gaze. "The decision was made and can't be unmade. What I can tell you is that your involvement going forward isn't optional. It's essential. This operation cannot succeed without what you bring to it."
"Everyone in this room benefits if this succeeds," he continued, letting his eyes move across the table. "A successful extraction under the Executive Director mandate changes the standing of every unit involved. I mean that practically, not as an incentive. As a true statement about what completion looks like from outside this room."
Jin looked at him with the careful attention of someone checking the structure of what she'd heard against what she already knew.
"I'll participate," she said.
Her eyes tracked him for the rest of the briefing with the patience of someone who had decided to watch and wait before she decided what to trust.
The briefing ran forty minutes. Martinez and Chen asked questions about tactical parameters. Tessa asked two questions about the extraction component, and Eric answered the first directly and told her the second depended on what surveillance produced. She held the non-answer without pushing.
Becca said nothing throughout. She sat at the near end and watched the room the way she watched a medical bay, cataloguing rather than commenting.
When it ended, the room dispersed. Eric moved to close the briefing files on the wall screen. He heard the door open and close several times, conversation resuming in low registers as people moved into the corridor.
He turned around.
Jin was still in her chair.
Her implant was dark now, feeds closed, hands folded on the table. She looked at him with the same measuring attention she'd held throughout, except that now the room was empty and the attention had nowhere else to go.
"Before this meeting," she said, "I ran a check on this room's booking history. Eighteen months ago, a meeting was booked here off the standard scheduling log. Operative named Corvin, northern division. He raised questions about mission parameters. He was transferred to a remote posting within the week." She paused. "Nobody at headquarters has had contact with him since."
Eric held her gaze.
"I'm not telling you this as a warning," Jin said. "I'm telling you because you should know I looked, and I found it, and I'm participating in this operation with full awareness of what that means." She stood, picking up her mobile unit. "I'll have the eastern waterfront surveillance architecture ready in forty-eight hours. Full grid coverage, no signal that traces back to this unit."
"Thank you," Eric said.
She moved to the door and stopped with her hand on the frame, not looking back.
"Whatever Lucien told you he wants from this operation," she said. "Make sure you know what he actually wants."
She left after saying those words.
Eric stood alone in the empty room and looked at the closed door for a long moment.
Then he turned off the wall screen and went to work.
