Chapter 644
Chapter 644
Robert said without hesitation: "I guarantee Simon only has two relatives—one is Harper, and the other is you."
"Stop teasing!" Elizabeth pretended to be annoyed.
"Elizabeth, I'm your boss. Shouldn't you get to work?" Robert asked with a grin.
Only then did Elizabeth realize she was late today.
She immediately got into the elevator. Just as the doors were closing, Elizabeth confirmed again: "Are you sure Simon doesn't have any other relatives?"
"Absolutely sure!" Robert said.
Elizabeth felt relieved.
She thought to herself that it was probably just a coincidence—after all, there were many people with the last name Jones.
After thinking this way, Elizabeth stopped worrying about it.
At work she remained dedicated as always, and after work she still picked up Alice from school. Since she'd been working extra hours these past few days to make up for lost time, Elizabeth had been dropping Alice off at kindergarten earlier each day.
As a result, for a whole week, Elizabeth didn't run into Juliana's mother at the kindergarten.
She gradually forgot about this person.
After all, it had nothing to do with her life.
She was just a cold and straightforward woman, that's all.
A week flew by in a flash.
This weekend, Julia suggested they all go on a picnic. Robert happened to be in Sunwillow City and enthusiastically agreed.
Harper was also excited.
But Elizabeth looked apologetically at her two best friends.
"I can't make it. How about we reschedule for the weekend after next? My mom has been busy these two weeks signing up for that senior dance group. You know, she can play piano and do some painting, but she really can't dance very well."
"But she wants to join in the fun, so whenever I have time, I practice with her to boost her confidence," Elizabeth said with a smile.
Mom hadn't enjoyed much in her life. Now that she was at this age and wanted to enrich her life, Elizabeth fully supported it.
"Then we won't go this week. I'll stay home and have some quality time with Robert," Harper said.
Julia shrugged: "I won't go either. I'll stay home and knit with my mom."
"Knit for who? Spill it! Is it for Simon?"
"As if! I already broke up with him, but he's sticking to me like glue!"
"You better not give it to him when you're done! Or I'll knock some sense into you!"
Julia: "I will give it to him, so what!"
"Haha." Tricked by Harper, Julia accidentally let it slip.
Elizabeth laughed on the side.
The three friends separated for the weekend and went home.
When Elizabeth picked up Alice and got home, Alexander wasn't back yet.
It had been a week now. Alexander had been leaving early and coming home late every day. The last time he kept such hours was before they went to Star Island, when Alexander had a huge workload to handle.
Plus, he had to carefully plan the situation on Star Island, which was why he left early and came home late.
Without thinking, Elizabeth knew this time it must be because of Matthew that he was keeping such hours.
At night, the man was still busy in his study.
Watching him smoke one cigar after another, Elizabeth couldn't help but bring him a glass of milk.
She placed the milk on his desk and raised her hands to massage his temples.
The man's head leaned tiredly against the woman's body.
Elizabeth had never seen Alexander like this. He was always calm and composed, never showing his emotions.
As if he never worried about anything.
"Is it really that hard to find him? Is he hiding that deep?" Elizabeth asked carefully.
The man didn't speak at first. After a while, he finally spoke slowly, his voice incredibly low: "He has a self-destruct system installed on him."
Elizabeth fell silent.
She finally understood why Matthew was so blatant every time he harassed the Windsor Manor, and why he ran wild everywhere in Sunwillow City.
It turned out he was really looking to die.
His message was clear: if you don't put effort into finding him, he won't let you find him.
But once you put all your energy into finding him and go all out against him, he'll activate his self-destruct system.
In other words, if you push him, he'll immediately self-destruct.
"He spent hundreds of millions to buy this self-destruct device in the Middle East, where the electronics industry and black technology are incredibly advanced."
Elizabeth couldn't help but gasp: "What does he want to do!"
The Matthew in her memory wasn't like this.
The Matthew she knew was rational, had principles, and was caring.
But now?
How much pain must his heart be bearing to make him do such hysterical things that hurt others and himself?
Elizabeth's heart ached.
"What are you going to do?" she asked the man.
The man: "Stop investigating him."
"Then he'll continue to harass the Windsor Manor."
"That's the punishment the Windsor Manor deserves!" Alexander said coldly.
Elizabeth: "What if—"
"If he dares to get close to you and Alice, that's when he'll be destroyed. Everything else is negotiable." Alexander's tone was calm.
His mother's other son—naturally he knew how to care for him.
But that kid had clearly gone crazy!
If Matthew was willing to behave himself properly, Alexander would give him a portion of the Windsor family's shares and make the company belong to both brothers.
But if Matthew really wanted to burn his bridges and fight to the death, then Alexander would have to be ruthless!
Elizabeth hugged her man's head.
She knew that whatever her man did, he had his reasons, and she would fully support him.
"Let's sleep," she said gently.
"Mm."
That night, it was mostly Elizabeth comforting the man.
She knew that making this decision had caused him great internal struggle—that pain of letting go.
That feeling of blood being thicker than water.
He had so few relatives to begin with.
"Sleep, honey. Tomorrow come with me to my mom's house to see how her dance practice is going, whether she's joined the group. I really want my mom to fit into a group, and then find herself a companion. That would be best," Elizabeth said to Alexander, changing the subject.
Alexander nodded: "Tomorrow we'll eat at Mom's. Have her make dumplings."
"Great!" Elizabeth rested her head on the man's arm and said cheerfully.
The next day.
The family of three went to her mother's place together.
Mother's small courtyard was usually quiet, but before they parked the car outside and entered, they heard laughter and conversation from inside the courtyard.
Who could it be?
Elizabeth deliberately stopped to listen and realized it was Simon.
"I'm having lunch here today, eating your cooking."
Donna smiled warmly: "If you want to eat, come here every week. I'll make it for you."
"Great!" Simon's tone was cheerful: "I'll move these two pots of flowers to the front door. They'll look best there."
As he spoke, he came to the door.
"Simon," Elizabeth called out. "Aren't you in Pariz with—"
"I came back, yesterday," Simon said. "Elizabeth, Alexander, Alice, come in quickly. I brought back some specialties from Pariz."
Just as Elizabeth was about to enter, she suddenly turned back and asked Simon: "Does your family have any other relatives?"
