Chapter 46
“Just give me the pups back and I’ll leave!” Selene slurred, struggling as Damien carried her into his den.
“You are not going anywhere, Selene.” He laid her gently on the furs, pulling a heavy pelt across her body to keep her warm.
“We’ll speak when you’ve sobered,” he said.
“Don’t go.” Her voice wavered, softened by drink. “Since we’re broken, at least give me
a farewell kiss?”
When Damien turned away, her fingers curled into his tunic with surprising strength. “If you won’t… then let me.” She pulled him down, brushing a trembling kiss against the corner of his mouth.
For a heartbeat, they stayed locked like that. Then Damien tore himself back, voice breaking rough as stone. “Damn it, Selene–don’t do that again!”
Her lips trembled; tears pricked her lashes. But before the sorrow could settle, his next curse fell low, dangerous, filled with heat.
“You drive me mad, woman. Do you know what happens when you test me like this?” His hand caught her chin. His mouth crushed against hers, the kiss fierce, demanding, claiming. A moan slipped from her throat as he pressed harder, his tongue insistent, leaving no space between them.
He pulled back only to trail fire along her neck, his voice a growl in her ear. “Don’t test me, Selene. I’m a man–you don’t know what you’re asking for.”
“Do you hate me… for not being beautiful enough?” she whispered through tears, the alcohol stripping her defenses. “It’s all right. I won’t trouble you again.”
Damien’s restraint shattered. “I warned you. If you keep tempting me, I’ll make you mine until there’s no doubt, until this den holds your scent alone.” His shirt was gone in a breath, muscles hard and taut beneath torchlight.
“Come here, Selene.” He kissed her again, raw and possessive, pouring out every hunger he had locked away.
“You’re mine,” he murmured against her lips, each word branded with need. “Do you hear me? Mine.”
The night blurred into heat and exhaustion. When at last they collapsed into uneasy sleep, Damien’s arm draped heavy across her waist. He pressed a final kiss to her shoulder.

Then–a sudden shimmer in the air. A rune–stone on the nightstand pulsed, glowing
with cold blue fire. Damien snatched it up, jaw tightening as a woman’s voice bled from the crystal–Melissa’s, smooth and cruel.
“Twin pups. Five moons old. Rare blood–curse with no cure.” Her laugh carried no warmth. “I alone can lead you to the healer who might save them. Or you may watch their pyres burn. You have one hour to decide.”

Damien’s grip turned white on the stone. His gaze fell to Selene’s sleeping face, peaceful against the furs.
“I will come,” he swore, voice low and steady, before the rune–flame hissed out and silence reclaimed the den.
