Chapter 148 Chapter 148. The Rescue
Lysander turned over Michael’s phone, going through it carefully. It did not take him long to find a short audio recording stored on the phone. He tapped it open and listened. The longer the recording played, the colder his eyes became.

His right hand tightened around the phone until his knuckles stood out, pale and almost white. The veins on his arm had also tightened, and the strength in his grip was so great that it looked as though he could crush the phone in his hand at any moment.

Just then, the phone in his coat pocket rang. Lysander took it out and looked at the screen. He hesitated for a few seconds before finally answering the call.

“Hello, Mom.”

“Don’t forget what you promised me. Once you find that person, come straight home.”

At those words, Lysander frowned slightly. The impatience on his face was obvious.

“I’m not coming back for now.”

Rosie, Lysander’s mother, immediately asked, “What did you just say?”

Lysander replied coldly, “I have something urgent to deal with here. I’m not leaving.”

“Lysander, that’s enough. How much longer are you planning to keep making trouble?”

There was already a trace of anger in Rosie’s voice.

“I’ve been making trouble for more than ten years already. Do you really still have to care about a few more days? If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up.” Lysander’s voice was extremely cold, and every word carried a faint but unmistakable hint of sarcasm.

“You…”

Rosie had only just managed to speak when Lysander hung up the phone.

She wanted him to go back? If he had a choice, he would never return to that place for the rest of his life. It had never been his home. To him, it was nothing more than a prison built for the sole purpose of keeping him under control, a place where every move he made could be watched and restricted.

Rosie stared at the call that had already been cut off, so angry that she could no longer hold it in. She called for the butler and told him to contact Mike.

After asking about the situation on Lysander’s side, Rosie finally learned from Mike that Lysander had mobilized so many people for just one reason—to save a single person.

That person had nearly been gang-raped by five people infected with blood poison. There were also many injuries on her body, some of them quite serious. Because of that, the possibility that she had been infected with blood poison was extremely high.

The moment Rosie heard the words blood poison, her entire body went cold. A bitter taste filled her mouth and her heart felt bitter as well, as if she had just swallowed a piece of goldthread.

She silently cursed Lysander a couple of times for being so damn difficult and not knowing when to stop. Then she went back to her bedroom, changed her clothes, and ordered the driver to take her to the hospital.

……

It was already past two in the morning. Zoria was still in the emergency room. Outside, the sky had slowly begun to brighten, and the snow had finally stopped falling.

At that moment, the door to the operating room was pushed open. The doctor took off his surgical cap and mask, then walked over to Lysander.

“Mr. Valerius, Zoria is out of danger now. The baby has been saved as well.”

When he heard those words, the heart Lysander had kept tightly clenched for the entire night finally relaxed. The tension that had been weighing on him since the moment Zoria was brought into the hospital eased little by little.

“She showed signs of a miscarriage this time, but fortunately, she was brought to the hospital in time.”

The doctor could not help sighing with emotion. The baby in Zoria’s womb was truly very lucky to have survived and been kept until now.

Lysander nodded and carefully asked the doctor about the things he needed to pay attention to, as well as what kind of diet would be suitable for Zoria while she was recovering.

As the doctor spoke, Lysander used his phone to write down every single thing he said. When he saw Zoria being wheeled out of the operating room and taken to the isolation ward, he immediately followed after her.

The doctor called him back and seriously reminded him, “Mr. Valerius, if Zoria really is infected with blood poison, then even if this child is born safely, the child may still not be able to live for very long.”

“I know, but I believe Zoria will be fine.”

A gentle yet confident smile appeared on Lysander’s face. The doctor was stunned for a moment, unable to take his eyes away from him. It was only after he came back to his senses that he realized Lysander had already left without him noticing.

Perhaps Zoria had been completely exhausted from the pain, because she was still unconscious at this time. Her small body had curled up into a little ball on the hospital bed. Her face was pale, and her delicate brows were still tightly drawn together, refusing to relax even in sleep.

When she was asleep, Zoria was strangely quiet. One had to walk very close and look carefully before being able to notice that her chest was still rising and falling with each weak breath.

Lysander sat slightly to the side of the bed and gently touched Zoria’s hand. He had stayed outside the operating room for the entire night, and the palm of his hand had long since become cold and numb. Yet when he held her hand, he felt as if he were holding a warm piece of jade in his palm.

Afraid that the coldness from his hand might make Zoria uncomfortable, Lysander let go. He rubbed both of his hands together to warm them before carefully taking her hand again. His hands were dry and much warmer now.

Zoria did not sleep peacefully at all. She fell into another nightmare.

In her dream, she saw an adorable little boy sitting beside the sea. She frantically shouted at him, telling him that the place was dangerous, but the little boy seemed unable to hear her voice no matter how loudly she called.

Zoria anxiously shouted, “Lior!”

The little boy slowly turned his head.

Where his eyes should have been, there were only two dark, empty sockets filled with black blood. The little boy looked at her, smiled, and softly called, “Mom.”

The very next moment, his small body tilted to one side and fell straight into the sea.

Zoria woke up with a start. She opened her mouth and gasped for breath, her face so pale that it almost looked transparent.

“Did you just have a nightmare?”

A gentle voice sounded beside her ear.
