Chapter 47 Forty Seven

Chapter 47 Forty Seven
The next day, Izzy woke early, feeling the usual mixture of excitement and nerves. Today wasn’t just any workday… it was a charity campaign and work fair at the university. Steele Enterprises and a few partner companies had organized it to raise awareness and funds for local youth programs, including scholarships, mentorship programs, and donations for underprivileged students. The event was designed to give interns, students, and local volunteers hands-on experience, while also promoting corporate social responsibility.

She arrived on campus to find students already bustling around, setting up booths, arranging tables, and hanging colorful banners. Volunteers were coordinating activities, including donation drives, interactive learning games, and small workshops for kids and teenagers. The air smelled faintly of fresh grass and baked goods from a small food stand on the edge of the campus, and the chatter of students, staff, and volunteers created an excited buzz.

Izzy’s role for the day was to manage one of Steele Enterprises’ main booths. Her booth focused on providing information about internships, scholarship opportunities, and volunteer programs, as well as distributing flyers and helping students sign up for various initiatives. She also had a small interactive game for students…. answer a question about career planning, and they’d get a small prize. It was simple, fun, and effective in drawing attention.

As she unpacked the materials, arranging pamphlets and pens neatly, she noticed Dominic arriving in his usual composed manner, dressed in a casual blazer and shirt, carrying a clipboard. His presence made her heart skip, even though she had resolved to stay strictly professional.

“Morning, pumpkin,” he said quietly, walking over and glancing at the setup. His voice was calm, measured, but there was a subtle intensity beneath it.

“Morning,” she replied curtly, keeping her voice neutral as she focused on stacking flyers.

Dominic didn’t push, just observed for a moment, his sharp eyes taking in the layout, the students, and the volunteers. Then he leaned slightly toward her. “So, today we’re here to help the students, educate them about opportunities, and hopefully raise some awareness about our programs. That’s the main goal. Got it?”

“Yes,” she said, nodding. “We’re guiding them through the programs, answering questions, and helping with registrations.”

He smirked faintly. “Good. I’ll be helping out too, but I want you to run your booth your way. Handle the students, make sure they’re engaged, and don’t let them get distracted. You’ve got this.”

She straightened. “I will.”

For the next hour, the campus was alive. Students approached their booths eagerly, asking questions about internships, scholarships, and volunteering. Izzy guided them patiently, explaining the programs, helping them fill out forms, and pointing out different activities across the campus. She felt genuinely satisfied when students left the booth excited to participate or learn more.

Meanwhile, Dominic moved around the campus, helping coordinate the event. He checked in on other booths, made sure volunteers had everything they needed, and occasionally offered advice to students. But Izzy noticed he frequently glanced her way. Every time their eyes met, she felt that familiar pull, even though she refused to let herself react openly.

Around mid-morning, a small group of students gathered for one of the workshops… learning about leadership and teamwork. Dominic briefly came to her booth, handing out a few forms, and she smiled politely while keeping her distance. “Thanks,” she said.

“No problem,” he replied. Then, as he started to walk away, he glanced back at her. “Keep them engaged, Izzy. Don’t let your attention wander.”

She forced a small smile, keeping her focus on the students. Inside, her heart raced—not from nerves, but from knowing he was watching her. She wanted to look calm, professional, and untouchable.

By noon, the event had grown even busier. Dominic returned to her area with a few more volunteers, helping set up the donation table. The students were taking turns answering questions to earn prizes, while others signed up for mentorship programs. Izzy guided them patiently, explaining the importance of giving back and how these programs could change lives.

At one point, a student asked, “How can we get more involved with Steele Enterprises?”

Dominic stepped in, handing the student a brochure. “You can start here,” he said. “Sign up for volunteer programs, attend workshops, and get hands-on experience. It’s all about learning and contributing.”

Izzy watched him handle the interaction smoothly. Part of her admired how good he was at this…. charismatic, professional, commanding attention…but another part of her burned with jealousy, knowing he could make anyone feel special with just a few words.

The afternoon passed quickly. The charity fair continued with interactive games, volunteer registrations, and small speeches from corporate representatives. Izzy and Dominic both stayed busy, running different parts of the campaign, yet their glances met repeatedly. Each time, it was a silent battle: her trying to stay professional, him trying to gauge her mood.

As the fair wound down, tables were packed up, and students began leaving with brochures and small souvenirs. Izzy felt a mixture of relief and accomplishment. The event had been successful, and she had managed her booth without faltering, keeping her professionalism intact.

Dominic walked over to her one last time before leaving. “You did really well today,” he said quietly, standing close enough that she could feel the heat radiating off him.

“Thanks,” she said, maintaining her neutral tone, though her pulse quickened.

He gave her a long look, one that carried a weight she couldn’t ignore. “See you at the office tomorrow?”

“Yes,” she replied, simple and professional, her eyes flicking back to the remaining volunteers and students.

Dominic nodded, finally turning away, leaving her alone with her thoughts. She exhaled slowly, realizing that even in a professional, structured environment, the pull between them was impossible to ignore.

Even as the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the campus, Izzy knew one thing for certain: the day had been about charity, work, and helping others…but every moment had been colored by Dominic Steele, and she couldn’t escape that.
