Broken glass.
My grandfather entered the room with a bottle of the strongest wine in the mansion. He sat quietly and left a glass in front of me.
"Why didn't you stop him? You should have sent your son to prison, why did you protect him?"
" I had lost your father and my daughter-in-law, I couldn't lose another son."
I exploded in anger and threw the glass on the floor, shattering it.
"DIDN'T YOU THINK OF ME? MY FEELINGS? LIVING WITH THE MURDERERS OF MY PARENTS!"
"I tried to get you away from Anabela, but you wouldn't listen."
"Did you? That's your excuse for what you did?"
Thinking about what I lost because of my actions, how it affected my relationship, growing up angry, made me a horrible being.
I lost the chance to be happy with Andreia because of that old man, and I can't even hate him because he's the only relative I have.
I endured so many failures, several gunshot wounds at the behest of my uncle, I knew his hatred for me, I grew up in this hostile environment.
"They made me weak."
"NO! They made YOU stronger!"
"YOU DIDN'T NEED TO BE STRENGTHENED, YOU NEEDED TO BE PROTECTED! I WAS JUST A KID WHO LOST HIS PARENTS!"
" That's why you had to learn the cruelty of the world, I did it for your own good."
I was stunned by his answer.
"Letting them kidnap me, poison me, shoot me in the body and put me in the hospital several times on the verge of death, all that, my dear?"
" Do you think I would have survived without it? Your traumas made you safe..."
I couldn't listen.
Lost in my own pain, I remembered every event that made me who I am. I remember walking along the river, my uncle unleashed his dogs that tore my arm, I screamed for help, I didn't understand his hatred for me then.
At the same time I discovered his involvement in the death of my parents. I took the evidence to my old man, who tore it up in front of me, his words sharp as a knife, telling me to forget it.
It was this hatred that blinded me when I had a wonderful woman by my side. She was the refuge I found to vent everything I felt for him.
And because of that, I missed the chance to be with her. All I'm left with is the bitterness of regret in my heart, the suffering that makes me lose.
Everything I touch always goes up in smoke, and even when I want to help, I end up getting in the way. It hurts too much, I've been in pieces for too long, leaning on someone to give me an excuse to live.
" Get out."
" If you want to blame me for making you stronger, go ahead, but it was all for your own good."
I looked at him, too tired. A weariness of the soul, sighing heavily to control my crying. Come to think of it, I've cried a lot since I came back from the dead.
I used to keep all the sadness in my heart, walking barefoot among the broken glass, ignoring the pain.
" I want to be alone."
"YOU'RE NOT A CHILD TO HIDE! THIS MADNESS OF YOURS! YOU THINK THAT'S HOW YOU SOLVE PROBLEMS? BE A MAN, BORIS!"
It was like the moment I pulled the trigger on his head, memories of his blows to my legs telling me to be superior. For the first time in a long time, I hit him, my fist going into his face so fast that he was caught off guard.
His body collapsed on the floor and my grandmother came in and looked at me like a monster. She screamed, cried, accused me of ingratitude.
I was miserable, I looked at my fist with his blood on it, then I ran outside with guilt. Andreia's mother was in the corridor, surprised by Andreia's side, I was frightened by their faces towards me.
"I... I..."
" Mom, go to the bedroom and lock the door. " Andreia said, treating me like a wild animal that might attack her.
I ran as fast as I could, leaving the house disoriented, seeing nothing and blocking out the sounds around me.
I had only one wish at that moment, to disappear. I finally stopped at the tree where I had made my initials with Anabela in an empty promise. With the memories of all her lies, I screamed and punched the ground, opening a hole in the earth and breaking my fingers.
The smiles we exchanged, his support mixed with his betrayal, it was worse to see how I had destroyed my happiness with my hands.
The tears didn't come out of my throat, I just let out a sigh after calming my mind. I looked up at the starry sky as I lay on the ground with my arms open. I closed my eyes and begged to die.
Andreia will be safe, half of her enemies are dead and the rest won't last long, so there's no need to do anything. They managed to sink alone.
That's when I saw my mother smiling and asking me to live, even if it was hard. Her affection and love were taken from me.
I came back in the early hours of the night, when everyone was asleep, and collected some things from the house, leaving documents on Andreia's bedside table, donating everything I owned and a long letter of apology.
I did the same to her mother and finally to my grandmother, kissing her on the forehead. Benedicto and Sebastian were the only ones ready to stop me.
"You won't get past here. " Sebastian says, putting on his fighting gloves.
" I won't let my only friend go to war. " He pointed his gun at me, ready to shoot me in the leg.
I started to laugh.
For being the only ones who care about me after being so selfish with them.
"Let's have a drink."
They looked at each other in confusion.
"I don't want to get into a fight with you."
"Boris, we won't let you go. " said Benedicto.
" If you want to die, do it here. " says Sebastian.
"What you're saying makes no sense."
" Shut up, you donkey. " Benedicto fights with him.
I approached them both and hugged them affectionately.
"They're my brothers. Thank you for coming to this house and staying with me for so long."
"You can't ask me to let you go. " Benedicto says.
" I won't ask."
"Wait for us to leave, never! " Sebastian says.
The two of them stood firm and almost made me step back, but I heard Andreia's sweet voice.
"Where are you going?"
I became nervous, trembling at the sight of his face, and ducked my head to get between my friends and into the car.
"BORIS! " Andreia yelled before I could start the car.
I avoided looking at her face and started the car with shaking hands.
