Chapter 70
Letícia Bliss
I was still not able to reason.
Everything that fucking Adrian had just told me seemed... impossible... no, it sounded crazy.
The more he talked, the more confused I became. And more furious too.
And the worst part was not even that, it was his face, talking about those things as if it were something common of his day to day.
"Lie. All this is lies... You want me to believe that there’s someone following Sofia? That her name is on a fucking list where people are hunted?" I shook my head in denial, laughing nervously. "And all this why? Because of a stupid title? This Alpha Supreme? What pathetic joke is that?"
He didn’t blink. He didn’t move.
Just stared at me with that frozen look that seemed to try to scare me.
"That’s no joke." he answered more seriously. "I wouldn’t have come to talk to you if it were."
"Oh, spare me these follies..." I replied, trying to maintain the posture. "I won’t fall for it. I may not know everything about your world, but this! It’s too much, I won’t let you drag Sofia into this shit, got it?"
I tried to get out of there, but he took a step forward, cornering me closer to the wall.
"One of my contacts found out that Serena..." he started. "Maybe she was a victim of purging... from the list."
I snapped when he spoke her name.
My aunt.
How?
Why did he know her name?
"What...?" the word escaped before I could grasp it.
"Serena Hines Bliss. Mother of Sofia."
I came out of supine, trying to pull myself together, trying not to scream.
"Shut up." My voice came out trembling, but I kept it steady. "Don’t you dare say her name! You know nothing! She died in a car accident!"
"Lie..." he replied "It was all forged."
"Lie?" I almost shouted, pushing his chest. "Lie? You bastard!
How dare you say that? How dare you?"
I could already feel the hot air coming out of my throat.
I almost lost control, but his presence...the way he looked at me as if he could kill me at any moment and just held back to not do it.
Damn it...
I didn’t know where he was getting that shit, but he couldn’t, couldn’t tell Sofia.
My cousin was alone.
Her father barely looked at her face. The mother... dead. And now this lunatic wolf comes to tell me that she is "in danger"? That someone is watching her? That my aunt - the woman who raised me as her own daughter- was murdered?
No.
I couldn’t let him tell her that.
"You’re not going to say any of this to her," I said, trying to tone down the "Nothing... She’s going through too much. If you throw all that into her head now, it will destroy what’s left of her."
He was silent for a few seconds.
And then released, as if it was the most logical thing in the world:
"Maybe it’s for the best."
"What?"
"If she wakes up now, things will go the right way..."
I denied it.
I denied with my head, with my body, with all that I was.
"You know what you’re saying?" I said. "I’ve seen what happens to mestizos when they wake up without support. I saw it at the club! They lose their heads. They go crazy. Some never become the same again. Do you want this for her? Do you want to see her lost?"
He stared at me, as if I were talking nonsense.
"The awakening is inevitable, you know that... you won’t be able to keep her from who she really is forever," he said coldly.
"Shut up," I replied almost coming out of me. "Sofia has no one but me, understand? Nobody! Who will help her when her eyes open to the truth?"
"I..." He spoke as if he had already decided.
Him? Did he really think it was so simple? That it was enough for him to want things to happen, without more or less? As if Sofia was an object he could claim whenever he wanted? Who does he think it is?
What the hell does he want with her?
"Stay away from her," I warned her firmly. "If you dare say a word of this shit to Sofia, I swear you’ll regret it."
A corner of his lip was raised, in a half-snared smile.
"And what can you... a human, do?"
I felt my teeth crack with anger, and at the same time, the hairs on my arms stand on end.
"Do you really think you can protect her?" he provoked. "Who can stop anyone from coming after her? Who can hide the truth forever?"
What a disgusting idiot!
"I can be human, I can be nothing compared to you," I replied, the voice getting shaky. "But I’m still the only thing left for her. And I won’t abandon it. Much less give it to you... how different are you from them?"
Silence.
I was taking a deep breath, trying not to cry, trying not to... do shit.
"And if she has to wake up,' I continued, with anger and fear mingling at the sight of their eyes starting to shine, "So be it. But it won’t be the worst way.
It won’t be in the most painful way."
I took a step back.
That’s when I heard footsteps in the corridor.
And before I could say anything, I saw Sofia around the corner.
My heart exploded.
I pushed Adrian aside, pretending to be natural, and went to her.
"Come on," I murmured, grabbing her arm. "It’s time to go."
I didn’t know if that shit was true... but I would find out, one way or another.
Even if it meant going after the truth alone.
Even if it meant facing those monsters.
