Chapter 33 The Counter-Offer

Chapter 33 The Counter-Offer

Isabelle's demand hangs like a blade.

Paris. Two years. Away from Kairo.

Zephyra stands on Fifth Avenue. Frozen.

Kairo walked away. His question echoed.

Was that a lie?

She calls Isabelle's assistant. Voice shaking.

"I need more time."

A pause. Then. "Hold please."

Isabelle's voice comes on. Cool. Professional.

"Ms. Lione-Draven. Having second thoughts?"

"I need more than twenty-four hours for a decision this big."

Silence. Calculating.

"Seventy-two hours." Isabelle says finally. "But not a minute more. Business doesn't wait for sentiment."

The line goes dead.

The dismissive tone ignites something in Zephyra's chest.

Sentiment. Like her marriage is just feelings getting in the way of success.

Like love is weakness.

She finds Kairo three blocks away. Sitting on a bench.

His head in his hands.

"Kairo." She sits beside him.

He doesn't look up. "Did you decide?"

"I asked for more time."

Now he looks. Eyes red. "How much?"

"Seventy-two hours."

He laughs. The sound is broken. "Three days to choose between your dreams and me."

"That's not fair—"

"Isn't it?" He turns to face her. "She's offering you everything. All you have to do is leave me behind."

They sit in silence. The park busy around them.

"She's testing us." Kairo says quietly. "Betting that money can break what love built."

The words settle between them. Heavy. True.

"You think this is a test?"

"I think Isabelle doesn't do anything without strategy." He looks at her. "She researched your work. Your history. You think she didn't research your marriage too?"

Zephyra's blood runs cold.

"Percy." She calls him immediately. "I need you to find out everything about Isabelle's research on me."

"Already on it." Percy sounds tense. "Zephyra, there's something you need to know."

"What?"

"Isabelle had a full dossier on you. Your marriage timeline." He pauses. "She knows it started as a business arrangement."

The world tilts.

"She knows?" Zephyra's voice is faint.

"Everything. How you married for the investment. How it became real later." Percy sounds apologetic. "She knows your marriage has a transactional foundation."

Zephyra looks at Kairo. His face has gone white.

"She's betting we'll break." She whispers.

"That's not all." Percy's voice darkens. "Emergency board meeting just called at Draven Corp. Isabelle announced a hostile takeover attempt."

The phone nearly drops from Zephyra's hand.

"What?"

"She's trying to acquire Draven Corp. The offer went out this morning." Percy sounds frantic. "The timing isn't a coincidence."

Kairo grabs the phone. "Percy, what are you talking about?"

"Isabelle is moving against Draven Corp. If she gets control, Kairo loses the company." Percy explains quickly. "And the offer to Zephyra? It isolates her. Takes her to Paris. Weakens your position."

Kairo's jaw clenches. "The offer wasn't an opportunity. It was a strategy."

"Exactly." Percy confirms. "She's weaponizing Zephyra against you."

They hang up. Stare at each other.

"She tried to use me." Zephyra's voice shakes. Not with fear. With fury. "She tried to weaponize me against you."

"She almost succeeded." Kairo stands. "If you'd taken the deal. If you'd gone to Paris. I'd be fighting alone. Distracted. Vulnerable."

"She underestimated us." Zephyra stands too. "She thought we'd fracture under pressure."

"We almost did."

"Almost." Zephyra takes his hands. "But we didn't. Because we're partners. And partners don't abandon each other."

Something shifts in his expression. Hurt fading. Replaced by determination.

"Then we show her what partnership really means." His voice is steel. "Together."

They go straight to Draven Corp.

The board is in chaos. Isabelle's offer sprawled across the table.

"She's offering thirty percent above market value." One board member says.

"She's trying to destroy us." Kairo's voice cuts through the room.

"Or improve us." Another board member argues.

"Her track record is acquisition." Zephyra interrupts. "She buys companies. Absorbs them. Controls them."

Caleb enters. Carrying documents.

"I have a counter-strategy." He spreads papers across the table. "Merge Zephyra's label with Draven Corp. Make it a subsidiary."

"Why would that help?" A board member asks.

"Because it changes the valuation." Caleb explains. "Zephyra's label is valued at fifty million post-lawsuit. If we merge, Draven Corp's value increases. Makes hostile takeover financially impossible."

The room goes quiet.

"You'd give up your independence?" Kairo looks at Zephyra. "To save my company?"

"Our company." She corrects. "We're partners. What hurts you hurts me."

His eyes fill with tears.

"We need to move fast." Caleb continues. "File the merger papers before Isabelle's offer deadline."

"How long do we have?" Zephyra asks.

"Forty-eight hours."

The board votes. Unanimous approval.

They spend the next two days in lawyers' offices. Signing papers. Filing documents.

Zephyra barely sleeps. Barely eats.

But she's never felt more alive.

This is a partnership. Real partnership. Fighting together.

On the third day, the merger is complete.

Draven Corp's valuation jumps. Isabelle's hostile takeover becomes impossible.

They're celebrating in Kairo's office when the email comes.

From Isabelle's lawyer.

Subject: Amendment to Previous Offer.

Zephyra's hands shake as she opens it.

"Ms. Lione-Draven,

Ms. Castellane has reconsidered her previous offer. She was impressed by your strategic response.

New proposal: merge all three companies as equals. Castellane International, Draven Corp, and Lione Designs.

However, Ms. Castellane requires proof of worthiness. She will only partner with true competitors.

You have twenty-four hours to respond."

Zephyra reads it twice.

"She's serious?" Kairo reads over her shoulder.

"Seems like it." Zephyra's heart pounds. "Equal partnership. All three companies."

"But what does 'proof of worthiness' mean?"

Another email arrives.

This one from Isabelle directly.

“Zephyra,

You impressed me. Most people crumble under pressure. You strategized.

The proof: compete against me. Paris Fashion Week. Four months. You design a collection. I design a collection. Head-to-head.

The winner takes control of the merged company. Loser becomes junior partner.

If you accept, you prove you belong at my level.

If you decline, my offer expires.

—Isabelle"
Zephyra stares at the screen.

A direct competition. Against Isabelle Castellane. At Paris Fashion Week.

"This is insane." Kairo whispers.

"This is an opportunity." Zephyra's voice shakes.

"She's baiting you."

"Or giving me exactly what I need." Zephyra looks at him. "A chance to prove I belong in her world. As her equal."

Kairo studies her face. "You want to do this."

"I do."

"Even knowing you might lose?"

"Especially knowing I might lose." Zephyra's smile is sharp. "Because if I don't try, I'll always wonder."

He pulls her close. "Then let's show Isabelle what we're made of."

They respond together.

"Challenge accepted. See you in Paris. —Z & K"

The response comes instantly.

"Excellent. But know this: I don't lose. And I don't hold back. Once we start, there's no mercy. The winner takes all. The loser walks away with nothing. Are you absolutely certain you want this war?"
