Chapter 16 Maya's Defeat

Chapter 16 Maya's Defeat

Maya stands by the windows. Pill in hand. That predatory smile.

" Two minutes," she says. "Then I send everything to Dalia."

Kairo and Zephyra stand united. Police wait within the hallway. Recording tool hidden in Kairo's jacket pocket.

They simply need Maya to admit.

"Check those." Maya swipes her tablet. photos flood the screen. "Your arguments. bloodless moments. Separate bedrooms. I've got the whole thing."

Zephyra's heart pounds. Those photographs show the whole lot of Maya claims.

"The world will recognise your marriage is a lie," Maya maintains. "Your careers. Your reputation. Gone."

Silence stretches like a twine pulled tight.

Then Zephyra speaks. Voice regular. Calm.

"Show them."

Maya blinks. "What?"

"Let the world see them. I don't care."
"You are bluffing."

"I'm not." Zephyra steps ahead. "Show them everything. Sure, the wedding started out as a contract. Sure, we fought. Yes, we had separate rooms."

Maya's smile falters.

"After that we fell in love." Zephyra's voice strengthens. "Really messy, complicated love. If you expose us, you will simply be telling a story with a happy ending."

Maya's facade cracks. Just slightly.

Kairo steps beside Zephyra. His shoulder touching hers. United.

"We are now not terrified of the truth anymore, Maya." His voice is quiet. powerful. " The truth is—I really like her. Genuinely. No longer on paper. No longer for show. I like her."

The words dangle inside the air like a declaration of conflict.

Maya's pill slips in her hand. Her ideal masks are crumbling.

"But you are supposed to love me." Her voice breaks. "You have been alleged to pick me out."

"I in no way did. You claim to love me yet sleep with other men. I know all these." Kairo's voice softens. "It is really not Zephyra's fault. It is not everybody's fault."

"You led me on—"

"I used to be clean from the beginning. You chose now not to pay attention to it."

Tears streak Maya's ideal makeup. "I gave you my all."

"You gave me what you wanted. Not what I wished for."

Maya's hands shake. The tablet crashes to the ground.

"You do not understand. He promised—" She stops. Catches herself.

"Who promised?" Zephyra asks quietly.

"Nobody. Not anything."

but it is too late.

The door bursts open. Percy enters with two police officers.

"We've enough," Percy announced.

Maya's face drains of colour. "What?"

"The recording tool caught the whole thing." Percy's voice is cold. "Bribing constructing safety. Hacking private security structures. Hiring investigators to stalk them. tried extortion."

"That's not—You can't—"

"We are able to. And we did."

One officer steps ahead. "Maya Delrose, you are under arrest."

"No. No. This isn't taking place." Maya backs away. "I was helping them. They had to be exposed—"

"You broke the law," the officer says. "More than one law."

Then another figure enters. A person in a steeply-priced fit. Maya's lawyer.

Maya's eyes widened. "Robert? What are you—"

"I contacted the police." His voice is flat. "Your obsession crossed into crooked territory. I needed to store my license."

"You betrayed me?" Her voice rises to a shriek. "I paid you—"

"To protect you. Not to be complicit in crimes."

Maya lunges for Zephyra. Arms outstretched like claws. "That is your fault! You stole him!"

Security grabs her. Restrains her.

"He became mine first!" Maya screams. Mascara jogging. Voice breaking. "He turned into mine!"

The officials lead her away. Her screams echo down the hallway.

Zephyra watches. Feels pity rather than anger.

"She needs help," Zephyra says quietly. "Not going to jail."

Kairo's arm wraps around her waist. "She'll get both. Restraining order and mandated therapy."

"Will that be enough?"

"It has to be."

In the elevator down, silence wraps around them.

The adrenaline fades. Exhaustion rushes in.

They speak at the same time.

"I'm sorry—"

"Thanks—"

They snort. The anxiety is breaking like a dam.

The elevator reaches the lobby. The doorways open.

Kairo catches her hand. Pulls her lower back inner.

"Wait."

The doors close. They're alone again.

He cups her face. His thumbs hint at her cheekbones.

"I mean what I said up there. Each word."

Her heart hammers. "Kairo—"

"I like you. I'm in love with you. I want you to know that."

The confession steals her breath.

She looked into his eyes. See the reality written there.

She wants to mention it back. Desperately.

But worry chokes her throat.

What if loving him was dropping her? What if she's no longer enough?

"I... Kairo, I—" Her voice breaks.

Tears move down her face. Hot. Unstoppable.

"I am sorry. I just... I want time."

Pain flashes throughout his features. raw. Unguarded.

Then he masked it with understanding.

"Take all the time you want." His voice is rough. "i am not going anywhere."

"You must want someone who can say it back. Who is not broken."

"You are not broken. You are cautious. There is a difference."

"I want to say it. I do. but—"

"But you are scared. I understand. it's ok."

Is it? The question hangs unstated.

The elevator doorways open again. lobby. people passing.

Kairo takes her hand. Leads her outdoors.

The morning sun blinds them. Clean air fills their lungs.

They stand on the sidewalk. The metropolis waking round them.

He pulls her near. His lips discover hers.

The kiss is real this time. No cameras. No target market. No performance.

Just them. Real. Raw. Sincere.

Relief floods through her. And passion. And something deeper she can't name yet.

However the asymmetry hangs between them. He's laid naked his heart. Hers remains guarded.

She pulls back. Rests her brow towards his.

"Thanks," she whispers. "For waiting."

"Always."

His cellphone rings. Shatters the moment.

He exams it. His expression shifts. "It is my mom."

He answers the speaker. "Mom."

"I heard what happened." Dalia's voice incorporates a strange warm temperature. "Are you safe?"

"We are fine. Better than fine."

"Good. Because I'd like you to come for dinner. An actual one. No checks. No games. Just... Family."

Zephyra's eyebrows shoot up.Family?

Dalia continues. "Zephyra—I need to see you first. Alone. The day after this morning. My estate. Do not make me wait."

The line goes dead.

Zephyra's face pales. Her palms start shaking.

Kairo sees it. "What did she say?"

"She wants to see me. Alone."

"Why?"

"I don't know. but it cannot be good."

"She called us a family. It's progress."

"Or a trap." Zephyra's belly twists. "Your mom hates me. She rejected me once. What if—"

"What if what?"

"What if she makes me select? You or my profession? Your family or my independence?"

"She might not."

"You do not know that."

He pulls her near. "Then we take care of it together."

"She said I should come alone."

"Then I'll wait outside. But I'm coming with you."

Some of the concern eases. Not all. But enough.

They stand there. Conserving every difference. The city dashing beyond.

Tomorr
ow brings new battles. New test.

However for now, they have got this moment. This reality. This love—even supposing the handiest one among them can say it but.

What does Dalia want, and could Zephyra survive the meeting that could end everything?
