Chapter 14 Forced Intimacy
Percy and Elara arrive at eight in the morning. Each looked too pleased.
It really is in no way a very good signal.
"We've information," Percy declares.
Zephyra sets down her coffee. "I do not like your tone."
"To combat the relationship problem rumors, we've booked you a couples' wellness retreat."
"Virtually not," Zephyra says.
"Not anymore," Kairo echoes.
Elara steps ahead. "It is not elective. The retreat consists of on-digital camera remedy periods. Very true. Very relatable."
"We are not doing therapy on camera," Kairo's voice is flat.
"You are. Otherwise you watch your reputation burn." Percy's smile does not reach his eyes. "The car leaves in two hours."
The lodge is nestled in the mountains. All glass walls and organic structure. peaceful. Serene.
Zephyra hates it right away.
A female in cream linen methods. "Mr. and Mrs. Draven. I'm Dr. Chen. Welcome."
Her smile is warm. Expert. The type that makes you want to spill your secrets and techniques.
"Let's start," Dr. Chen says.
They've caused a room with ground-to-ceiling home windows. cameras located discreetly in corners.
Zephyra's chest tightens. "This seems like an interrogation."
"It's just a verbal exchange." Dr. Chen settles into her chair. "not anything to worry about."
A whole lot to worry, Zephyra thinks.
Dr. Chen starts mildly. Background questions. How they met. First impressions.
Kairo answers easily. The practiced lies roll off his tongue.
Then Dr. Chen shifts.
"When did you first recognize you had been in love?"
The question hangs like a blade.
Zephyra opens her mouth. Close it. No prepared answer for this.
Kairo surprises her. "The engagement party. while she kissed me back."
Dr. Chen leans forward. "What about you?"
"It has been imagined to be for show. But when our lips touched..." He pauses. "Something shifted. like the globe tilted on its axis."
Zephyra stares at him. Is he acting? Or telling the fact?
"And you, Zephyra?" Dr. Chen activates.
"when he defended me against Maya." The words come earlier than she can prevent them. "At Fashion Week. She humiliated me. And he... he protected me. Nobody's ever performed that before."
The confession feels too raw. Too real.
Kairo's eyes locate hers. Something unstated passes between them.
Dr. Chen keeps. Every question digging deeper.
"What do you like most about your companion?"
Zephyra speaks slowly. cautiously. "He notices matters. Small matters. My preferred ice cream. How I take my espresso. That comic strip when I'm disturbing." Her voice softens. "He sees me. Even if I don't need to be seen."
Kairo's throat works. Like he is swallowing something painful.
"Kairo?" Dr. Chen asks.
His voice is raw when he speaks. "She's brave. Fearless in a way I have never been. She refused to shrink into a world designed to break her." He pauses. "Whilst she laughs, it is the most sincere sound I've ever heard. Like sunlight breaking through clouds."
The metaphor steals Zephyra's breath.
Dr. Chen researches them both. "That doesn't sound fake to me."
Neither responds. can't respond.
The session keeps. They mention the threats. The surveillance. Maya's vendetta.
Dr. Chen nods thoughtfully. "Your courting's authenticity isn't always determined by the way it began. It's decided by using the way you pick each other. Each single day."
The words settle heavy in Zephyra's chest.
"Many relationships begin transactionally," Dr. Chen continues. "Arranged marriages. Political alliances. Business partnerships. But real love grows from choice. From showing up. From seeing each other's worst and staying anyway."
Kairo's hand unearths Zephyra's. Their arms intertwine.
On camera. For the world to see.
But it does not feel like a performance anymore.
The session ends. They're given the afternoon to "reconnect."
They walk the grounds in silence. Mountains rising around them like guardians.
"Did you mean it?" Zephyra finally asks. "What did you say in there?"
"Every word."
"Even the part about the kiss?"
He stops walking. Turns to face her. "Especially that part."
Her heart hammers. "Kairo—"
His phone buzzes. Then again. And again.
He checks it. His face goes pale.
"What?"
"Raw footage leaked. From the therapy session."
"What?" She grabs his phone.
The clips are everywhere. Awkward pauses edited together. Hesitations magnified. Their discomfort highlighted.
"THEY'RE BREAKING UP"
"I KNEW IT WAS FAKE"
"#ZephKaiBreakup trending worldwide"
The comments are vicious. Gleeful. People celebrating their perceived failure.
"They edited it," Zephyra whispers. "Made us look bad."
"Who leaked it?"
"I don't know. But someone has access to the raw footage."
Her phone buzzes. Percy calling.
"Did you see?" He sounds panicked.
"We saw."
"This is bad. Really bad. The narrative is spiraling."
"We'll fix it."
"How? People think you're breaking up."
"Then we prove we're not."
She ends the call. Looks at Kairo.
"We need to release the full footage. Show what was really said."
"Percy would never allow it. Too raw. Too real."
"Exactly. That's why it'll work."
Before he can respond, his phone rings.
Unknown number.
He answers the speaker. "Hello?"
"Kairo." Dalia's voice is ice. "We need to talk."
"Mother. Now's not a good time."
"Someone delivered a package to my office. Proof your marriage is fake." Her voice could cut glass. "Photos. Videos. Documents. Everything."
Zephyra's stomach drops.
"I'm reviewing everything tomorrow at nine AM." Dalia continues. "You have until then to explain. Or I'm shutting down this circus. The project. The merger. Everything."
"Mother—"
"Nine AM, Kairo. Don't be late."
The line goes dead.
Zephyra and Kairo stare at each other.
"She's going to see everything," Zephyra whispers. "The contract. The staged photos. All of it."
"We explain. Tell her the truth."
"The truth that we lied to everyone? Including her?"
"The truth is that it started fake but became real."
"Will she believe that?"
His silence is answer enough.
Zephyra's phone buzzes. New message. Unknown number.
"Tick tock. Tomorrow Dalia sees everything. Unless you do exactly what I say. Check your email."
She opens her laptop with shaking hands.
New email. Anonymous sender.
"I want $5 million transferred by midnight. Or Dalia gets everything at 9 AM. Choose wisely."
Attached is a photo. The contract they signed. Their signatures clear as day.
And highlighted at the bottom: "Marriage duration: One year. Termination clause included."
Kairo reads over her shoulder. His face hardens.
"We're not paying."
"Then Dalia destroys everything."
"So we tell her first. Before whoever this is can."
"Tell her what? That we lied? That we've been lying this whole time?"
"That we fell in love despite trying not to."
The words hang between them. A confession neither expected.
"Did we?" Zephyra asks quietly. "Fall in love?"
Kairo cups her face. His thumb traces her cheekbone.
"I did. The question is—did you?"
What answer can she give that won't destroy everything they've built—or save what they're becoming?
