Chapter 98 Receiving Retribution
"Samuel!"
In the computer science lab, the clatter of keyboards filled the air.
When the professor called his name, Samuel stood up with a smug look on his face.
He had written those programs quickly and well.
The people on either side of him were struggling away, barely halfway through after all that time, while he had already finished and submitted his work.
Thinking about being singled out for praise by the professor again, Samuel felt incredibly pleased with himself.
"Come out here for a moment..."
The professor stood at the classroom door with a serious expression.
Samuel looked up, and as he walked out, his expression changed slightly.
"You're Samuel, right?"
Two police officers, a man and a woman, with body cameras clipped to their shoulders, verified his personal information and showed their police badges and an official summons stamped with the department seal. "You're suspected of spreading rumors and defamation. Please come with us to the station!"
The first time he'd seen police was when Rebecca's lawyer brought them along.
That person had shown credentials and identified themselves, then said nothing more, as if merely accompanying the lawyer.
But this time, there was no lawyer. These two officers looked like they were here to handle a major case.
He tried to reassure himself that it was all for show, after all, so many eyes were watching.
But Samuel's heart kept sinking.
It was an ordinary Friday, but for many people at Empire University, it was anything but ordinary.
Cara Ross from the Foreign Languages Department received her internship employment application back from the department.
The ten-plus page report had her personal profile on the first page, followed by her excellent academic achievements over four years of college, and her award certificates.
The department's evaluation was full of praise, saying she had exceptional personal abilities, particularly outstanding talent in foreign languages, and so on.
In short, it could be considered an excellent resume.
With a face full of joy, Cara had already planned to treat her roommates to a big meal and bask in their envious expressions.
When she flipped to the last page, her face instantly turned pale.
The last page contained the Windsor Group's Human Resources Department's decision.
In the decision column, they hadn't even given a reason—just a blood-red "REJECTED" stamp.
Cold and merciless.
Cara was completely stunned!
Why?
Why was this happening?
With such excellent grades, the Windsor Group still didn't want her?
Shortly after, Cara learned the real reason from her teacher.
It was all because of a few defamatory remarks about Rebecca she had posted on the forum.
She wanted to say she had just been caught up in the moment, just going along with everyone else.
She also wanted to say she had only heard it from others—how was she supposed to know they were making it up?
The words reached her lips, but Cara swallowed them back.
Cara couldn't help but think of Lucy.
When Rebecca stayed one night in room 620, and the next day at noon when the three of them confronted Lucy about bringing someone back to the dorm, Lucy had been indignant: "We're all girls, what's the big deal about staying one night?"
Turning away, Lucy had muttered: "So petty."
At the time, the three of them had ganged up on her, saying if it happened again they'd file a complaint and make Lucy change rooms.
But unexpectedly, before they could complain, Lucy had been invited by Rebecca to live at Star Apartments.
And now, she was getting her comeuppance!
Face white as a sheet, Cara's heart felt ice-cold as she turned to leave, filled with regret.
Some rejoiced while others worried.
Although he hadn't been able to wait for Empire University's official response, Floyd had done what he could.
After handing over all the compiled materials to Rebecca for future use, Floyd was walking out of Empire University's gates when someone called out to him.
"Mr. Ryan..."
In front of a black Maybach, a well-dressed man in a suit had a gentle expression.
Floyd was certain he didn't know him.
Even so, he walked straight over.
