Chapter 93
Chapter 93
Isabella's POV
"I'd love to go find Campbell, but only if I could actually track him down."
Theodore was giving me way too much credit. Campbell's eyes were on Eleanor now, forget about finding him, I couldn't even reach his subordinates.
Theodore's gaze was sharp and gleaming. He grabbed my wrist, leaned in close, and urgently asked me, "How did you two contact each other before?"
An uneasy feeling stirred inside me. I shook off his hand, "Who told you we were in contact before?"
I'd never told him that Campbell and I had been in touch. How did he know?
And that was all in the past, why was he asking about it now? His motives were definitely not pure.
Theodore touched his nose, his eyes darting away from mine, "I was just asking casually."
Then he added an explanation, "I saw you making calls often, thought it might be Campbell."
His explanation was totally suspicious.
It felt like a bucket of cold water had been dumped over my head, draining all the warmth from my body.
I didn't care how Eleanor dealt with me, didn't care that my parents didn't love me. The one thing I couldn't accept was Theodore betraying me.
I couldn't understand why he was asking me all these questions, all about Campbell.
What was he trying to do? Fishing for information to help Eleanor?
I didn't dare think too deeply. I seemed to see Eleanor's smile on Theodore's face.
I remembered when they first got together, Eleanor holding onto Theodore's arm, smiling brightly as she introduced me to her boyfriend.
My emotions were banquet or a dinner party. Right now, I just wanted to know what Theodore was really thinking.
How could he help Eleanor? I was clearly the vulnerable one now.
"Theodore, tell me the truth, have you and Eleanor been secretly in contact this whole time?"
Theodore frowned, clearly annoyed with me.
Compared to before, he was like a completely different person.
I had no doubt he would abandon me if something happened to me.
A bold guess formed in my mind, "Theodore, you weren't the one who told Eleanor about this, were you?"
Theodore's face finally showed a look of exasperation. He was furious, his chest heaving, "What kind of person do you think I am? You're my woman. My most important mission in life is to protect you. How can you doubt me?"
Theodore looked hurt. He pulled me by the arm into a corner and reminded me in a low voice, "I tried to stop you from going after Eleanor, who do you think that was for? I was worried about Lucas coming after you. Not only are you ungrateful, but you also keep doubting my sincerity. You've really disappointed me."
Theodore turned to leave.
Watching his retreating figure, I panicked, at a loss, not knowing what to do with my hands and feet.
I rushed over and wrapped my arms around Theodore's waist, pressing my face against his back, pleading desperately, "Honey, don't go, don't leave me here alone. I shouldn't have doubted you. I was just too anxious."
Theodore softened after all. He turned around and cupped my face, his eyes overflowing with tenderness, "Trust me, I'll always be on your side."
I looked up at Theodore. His eyes held countless stars, but I didn't know if I should believe him.
I grabbed Theodore's hand and deliberately used a pleading tone, "Honey, since you want to protect me, could you help me find out what evidence Eleanor has?"
Theodore's body clearly stiffened. I continued persuading him, "Honey, I have no other options. Do you want to watch me go to prison?"
Theodore didn't respond. To push him further, I had to threaten with my life, "Honey, think about it carefully, if this really gets out, it'll be the Vance Family's biggest scandal. Mom and Dad definitely can't accept their daughter doing something like this. I don't want to disappoint them. If the outcome will be the same either way, I might as well die now."
I cried out loudly and ran toward the exit. People at the party heard my voice and came rushing over.
Theodore dispersed the onlookers while pulling me to a corner, sighing, "If you'd known it would come to this, why did you do it in the first place? I told you not to go against her, but you wouldn't listen."
Theodore's helpless tone carried a hint of indulgence. I immediately grabbed his hand and hurried to ask, "So does that mean you're willing to help me go beg Eleanor?"
"I can try, but she might not listen to me. If you really want to know, why not go find her yourself?"
Theodore lectured me like an elder, "She's your sister. As long as you're willing to ask, she'll definitely soften."
I pressed my lips together and didn't respond.
I took the initiative to lean into his embrace, hugging him tightly, "Honey, thank you."
Theodore's actions made me dismiss my doubts about him.
I knew his heart was still with me, but I had to hurry and get rid of Eleanor, at least drive her out of Gloriana.
Her staying here was a huge threat to me.
Before the party officially started, I found Campbell with the server's help.
I knew he'd been weak since being drugged, but I didn't expect that in just a few short days, he'd become like a different person.
I cornered him in the lounge and demanded, "Mr. Volker, long time no see."
Campbell took a wary step back, his murky eyes like an unfathomable muddy pool.
I couldn't read any emotion in his eyes. He was too calm, like a dead person.
But it was normal for him to be like this in his current state; he's even less alive than a dead person.
Campbell's eyes drooped downward. It didn't seem intentional that he just didn't have the strength to lift them.
I bent down to meet his gaze, "Mr. Volker, do you have time to chat with me about Eleanor?"
"You're already here, why are you asking me?"
Though Campbell looked listless, his words still carried authority.
It seemed the drug only weakened his body but didn't damage his mind, at least his brain was still functioning normally, and he still had the energy to spar with me verbally.
I straightened up, my gaze falling on his half-bald head, "Mr. Volker, I actually don't want to bother you. I just want to ask you one question that did you give Eleanor the evidence she has?"
Including what evidence she'd obtained that I had to get clear answers.
Campbell struggled to lift his head, the cloudiness in his eyes slowly clearing, becoming transparent, "She came to see you?"
I sensed trouble and probed, "Don't tell me she came to see you too?"
Campbell nodded slightly, "Looks like she went to see Tasha too."
I immediately understood his meaning, "Don't tell me Tasha was the one who gave her the evidence?"
Campbell said nothing, which was as good as confirmation.
"Looks like Tasha doesn't have much feeling for you either."
Campbell's lips curved in a self-mocking smile, "More than that, she's wanted me dead for a long time."
