Storm of Truth

Thunder crashed overhead as rain poured down on the Stone Circle. The wolves had taken shelter in nearby caves, but Liam stood alone in the storm, face lifted to the angry sky. Water soaked his silver hair, plastering it to his skin.

"You shouldn't be out here," Elijah said, stepping from the shadows. He held a thick blanket in his hands.

Liam didn't turn around. "I can feel her out there. Morta. She's getting stronger."

Lightning flashed, lighting up the night. For a split second, Liam's skin glowed with silver markings that hadn't been noticeable before.

"How's Luna?" Liam asked, finally turning to face Elijah.

"Heartbroken. Thorne's body still breathes, but without his life force..." Elijah's voice trailed off. "Sage says he won't last more than a day."

"And all because he was trying to help us." Liam's voice cracked. "Everyone who helps us ends up hurt."

Elijah stepped closer, holding out the blanket. As lightning flashed again, he saw tears mixing with rain on Liam's face.

"Come inside," Elijah pushed. "The pack needs us."

"The pack needs leaders who know what they're doing," Liam argued. "I don't even know what I am, Elijah."

A sudden gust of wind nearly knocked them both over. They stumbled together, Elijah catching Liam by the shoulders.

The moment they touched, something strange happened. The rain around them froze in mid-air, suspended like tiny diamonds.

"What's happening?" Elijah whispered, not letting go.

Liam stared at the frozen raindrops. "It's us. It's our bond."

The raindrops began to glow, silver and gold, forming a dome of light around them. Within this bubble, everything was calm and dry, while the storm raged outside.

"I don't understand any of this," Elijah admitted. "My father never told me about our family's Omega blood. He let me believe Alphas were meant to rule."

"And I never knew I carried the first Omega's power," Liam said. "Aria and I just thought we were different, that we needed to hide."

A crack of thunder shook the ground. Outside their bubble, they could see the bone wolf guardian pacing the edge of the Stone Circle, keeping watch.

"Why did you come looking for me?" Liam asked suddenly.

Elijah paused, then reached into his pocket. He pulled out a small stone that glowed with purple light.

"What is that?" Liam gasped, stepping back.

"I found it where Thorne fell," Elijah explained. "It's a piece of his life force that Morta missed. Sage says with this, we might be able to save him."

Hope flashed across Liam's face. "How?"

"We need to combine our powers again. Like we did against Morta's skeleton." Elijah held out the stone. "But Sage warned it might be dangerous. The connection could go too deep."

Liam's eyes met Elijah's. "What does that mean?"

"It means we might never be able to separate our minds again." Elijah's voice was low. "Our thoughts, our feelings—everything would be shared."

Lightning flashed again, and in that moment, Liam saw fear in Elijah's eyes. Not fear of the storm, but fear of being that exposed.

"You're afraid of me seeing who you really are," Liam realized.

Elijah looked away. "I've spent my whole life being what the pack needed. Strong. Certain. Unbreakable."

"Nobody is unbreakable," Liam said softly. He reached out, his fingers brushing Elijah's cheek. "I've seen your strength. Now show me your heart."

The rain bubble around them pulsed, getting brighter. Liam's silver markings began to glow more strongly, matching the rhythm of Elijah's heartbeat.

"I've never let anyone in," Elijah whispered. "Not like this."

"I know," Liam said. "Me neither."

Slowly, carefully, Liam put his hand over Elijah's, covering the purple stone. Gold light from Elijah's eyes met the silver glow from Liam's skin. The stone between their hands grew warm.

"Ready?" Liam asked.

Elijah nodded. Together, they closed their eyes and let their powers run.

Images flashed between them. Memories. Feelings. Fears.

Elijah saw Liam as a child, hiding his silver markings, afraid of his own strength. He felt Liam's loneliness, his constant fear of discovery.

Liam saw Elijah training to become Alpha, pushing himself past breaking, trying to make his father happy. He felt Elijah's doubt, his secret fear that he wasn't strong enough to protect everyone.

The storm outside grew stronger, but inside their bubble, a different kind of storm raged—a storm of truth as walls came crashing down between them.

"I see you," Liam whispered, tears running down his face. "All of you."

"And I see you," Elijah replied, his own eyes wet.

The purple stone between their hands began to change, the dark color washing away, replaced by whirling silver and gold. It pumped like a heartbeat—their heartbeat, now beating as one.

Suddenly, the bubble around them burst outward. The force of it sent the storm clouds scattering, showing a night sky filled with stars. The rain stopped instantly.

Both men fell to their knees, hands still clasped around the changed stone. They gasped for breath, stunned by what they had just shared.

"Did it work?" Liam eventually asked. "Can we save Thorne?"

Before Elijah could answer, a howl cut through the night—not the bone guardian, but something else. Something wrong.

At the edge of the bush, red eyes glowed in the darkness. Dozens of them. Then hundreds.

"What are those?" Liam asked, getting to his feet.

The bone guardian growled, hackles rising along its spine.

"Shadow wolves," Elijah said sadly. "Morta's creation. She's using Thorne's life force to make an army."

The creatures emerged from the trees—wolves made of shadow and purple fire, their bodies not quite solid, their teeth gleaming white against the darkness.

"We need to warn the others," Liam said, turning toward the caves.

But the shadow wolves moved with impossible speed, cutting off their way.

"Elijah," Liam whispered, backing up against him. "I can still feel you in my head."

"I know," Elijah replied, his thoughts flowing easily into Liam's mind. "Our bond worked."

Then let's use it, Liam thought straight to Elijah.

Together, they faced the coming shadow wolves. Silver light ran from Liam's hands while gold light shimmered around Elijah's body. Where the lights met, white fire formed between them.

But as the first shadow wolves leaped, a voice spoke inside both their minds—Morta's voice, somehow breaking through their bond.

"Thank you for showing me how your connection works," she laughed. "Now I know exactly how to break it."

Pain exploded in their joined minds. The white fire flickered and died. As they fell to the ground, the shadow dogs closed in.

And through their shared awareness, they felt something new—a dark presence slipping in through the crack in their defenses, making itself at home inside their bond.
