Ancient Chains
Elijah's eyes opened to chaos. The world spun around him like a broken carousel. His chest burned where the knife had entered, but the black poison lines had changed. Now they were lined with silver, like cracks filled with moonlight.
Next to him, Liam was awake too, violet eyes wide with shock. They locked eyes, and in that moment, something passed between them—strength, memory, power.
"You're awake!" Aria cried, relief filling her face. But that relief vanished as she spun around to face someone at the tent door.
The betrayer stood frozen, surprise clear on their face. The black stone in their hand pulsed with angry purple light.
"You," Elijah growled, memories rushing back. The flash of purple eyes in the dark. The knife. The cold voice saying, "Morta sends her regards."
Before anyone could move, Liam thrust out his hand. A wave of silver light shot from his hand, hitting the betrayer square in the chest. They flew backward, out of the tent and into the fight outside.
"We need to move," Elijah said, trying to stand. His legs shook like a baby fawn's.
"You're still weak," Aria argued, helping him up.
"The pack needs us," Liam said, already on his feet. The silver marks on his skin glowed brighter with each passing second.
Elijah could hear the sounds of fighting outside—growls, screams, the clash of weapons. "What happened?" he asked.
"Thorne declared war," Aria explained quickly. "He says Liam is too dangerous to live."
Liam's face hardened. "Let's show him what dangerous really means."
They stumbled out of the tent into a nightmare. Wolves fought everywhere, some in human form, others as animals. Blood stained the ground. The Moonlight Pack was outnumbered by Thorne's troops and their new allies.
"Father!" Elijah called, finding Marcus fighting three wolves at once.
Marcus turned, his face lit up with hope when he saw them. "Elijah! Liam!" he yelled. "You're alive!"
That shout caught everyone's attention. The fighting stopped as all eyes turned to see the Alpha and his Omega mate standing together, their skin marked with silver runes.
"The monsters awake," Thorne called from across the battlefield. His golden eyes burned with hate. "Now you'll all see the danger I warned you about!"
"The only monster here is you, Thorne," Liam shot back. "Starting a war while we were unconscious? That's the act of a coward."
Thorne's face twisted with rage. "I act to protect all wolves from what you will become!"
Marcus fought his way to Elijah's side. "Son," he said quickly. "We need to retreat. The pack is divided. Some believe Thorne's lies."
"No," Elijah said, standing taller. "No more running. No more hiding from the truth."
He stepped forward, addressing all the dogs present. "Look at us! What do you see?"
"Abominations," Thorne spat.
"Hope," Rook replied, moving to stand beside Elijah. "I see hope."
Elijah nodded to Rook before continuing. "My father warned me that changing pack law would bring chaos. He was right." He gestured to the battlefield around them. "This is the chaos of change. But it's necessary chaos."
"What are you talking about?" a young wolf asked, her weapon lowered in surprise.
"Our laws are built on lies," Elijah stated. "Lies that Alphas are superior. Lies that Omegas should be controlled. These lies have kept us divided, weak."
"Strong," Thorne corrected. "The pack system keeps us strong!"
"Then why did you need to attack us while we were unconscious?" Liam asked, his voice carrying across the suddenly quiet camp. "If you're so strong, why fear us?"
Thorne had no answer for that.
Marcus stepped forward, his face grave. "Elijah, a word."
They moved slightly away from the others. "What you're doing is dangerous," Marcus warned in a low voice. "I've spent my life upholding pack law. I've seen what happens when wolves reject our ways."
"What happens?" Elijah asked, truly wanting to know.
"Chaos," Marcus repeated. "Fighting. Death. The humans notice us. They hunt us."
"That was the past," Elijah countered. "We can make a new future."
"At what cost?" Marcus asked. "How many will die for your vision?"
Before Elijah could answer, a flash of movement caught his eye. The betrayer was back, running straight for Liam with a knife.
"Liam!" Elijah shouted.
Liam turned, but too late. The knife was inches from his heart when Aria threw herself in front of her brother. The blade sank into her shoulder instead.
"No!" Liam screamed, grabbing his sister as she fell.
Elijah lunged for the betrayer, but they were too quick. They ran to Thorne's side, grinning with triumph despite missing their target.
"Aria," Liam cried, holding her head. "Stay with me."
"I'm okay," she gasped, though blood soaked her shirt. "It's not deep."
Luna rushed forward, her healer's senses overriding pack divisions. "Let me help," she said, kneeling beside Aria.
Thorne watched with narrow eyes as his mate helped the enemy. "Luna," he called. "Return to my side. Now."
Luna looked up, her kind face suddenly hard. "No."
One word, but it echoed like thunder. Thorne's mouth fell open in shock.
"No?" he repeated, as if he couldn't believe his ears.
"I've followed you for years," Luna said, her voice getting stronger. "Watched you twist the truth. Hurt those who opposed you. No more." She looked around at the gathering wolves. "Thorne doesn't care about protecting pack law. He cares about power. His power."
"Traitor!" Thorne growled.
"I'm loyal to the truth," Luna answered calmly. "And the truth is in the old scrolls. The ones you've been hiding."
Gasps spread through the crowd. Even Thorne's friends looked uncertain now.
"What scrolls?" Marcus asked.
"The First Pack scrolls," Luna explained. "They tell the true history of Alphas and Omegas. How they ruled together, equals in power but different in gifts."
"Lies!" Thorne yelled, but his voice sounded desperate now.
"I've seen them," Rook confirmed. "Hidden in Thorne's private chamber. They speak of a time when wolves lived in harmony, when the strength of Alphas and the magic of Omegas balanced each other."
The wolves talked among themselves. Many lowered their guns, confusion replacing anger.
Elijah looked at his father. "Did you know about this?"
Marcus's face was pale. "There were rumors. Stories my grandfather told. I never thought..."
"Enough talk!" Thorne yelled. "Kill them all!"
But his wolves paused. Doubt had taken root.
"Listen to me," Elijah called out, finding power he didn't know he had. "For generations, we've lived by laws that divide us. That make us fear each other's gifts. Look at what that fear has done today—wolf fighting wolf while our true enemy laughs."
As if called by his words, the sky darkened suddenly. Thunder rolled across the camp. A cold wind blew, bringing the scent of decay.
"Morta," Liam whispered, still holding his injured sister.
A swirling mass of shadows emerged in the center of the camp. It spun faster and faster, then formed into the form of a tall, pale woman with eyes like purple flames.
"How touching," Morta said, her voice like ice cracking. "The wolves finally learning the truth. Too late, I'm afraid."
"Why are you doing this?" Elijah asked. "What do you want?"
Morta smiled, showing teeth that were too sharp to be human. "Want? I want what was promised to me centuries ago. Power over all wolves. Control of the pack magic."
"No one promised you that," Marcus growled.
"Oh, but they did," Morta purred. "Ask your father, young Alpha. Ask him about the deal made with darkness when the first pack laws were written."
All eyes turned to Marcus, whose face had gone white as snow.
"Father?" Elijah asked, suddenly afraid of what he might learn.
Marcus shook his head slowly. "It can't be true. It was just a story."
"Tell them," Morta demanded. "Tell them how the first Alphas called on my power to suppress the Omegas. How they promised me the combined magic of all wolves in return."
A terrible quiet fell over the camp. Even Thorne looked shocked.
"Is it true?" Elijah asked his father, his voice barely above a whisper.
Before Marcus could answer, a blast of purple energy shot from Morta's hand, hitting the ground between them. The earth split open, forming a chasm that separated Elijah from the others.
"Enough history lessons," Morta laughed. "I've come to collect what's mine."
She raised her hands, and the black stones around her slaves' necks glowed brighter. The betrayer and several other dogs dropped to their knees, bodies twisting in pain.
"What are you doing to them?" Luna cried.
"Claiming my payment," Morta answered simply.
The kneeling wolves began to change. Not into their wolf forms, but into something else—larger, darker, with glowing purple eyes and teeth like knives.
"Elijah!" Liam yelled, trying to reach him across the widening chasm.
Their eyes met across the gap. In that moment, Elijah knew what he had to do.
"Break the laws," he called to Liam. "All of them. It's the only way."
Morta's laughter cut through the air like a blade. "Too late, little Alpha. The chains that bind your kind to me were forged in blood and sealed with oaths. Only blood can break them."
She pointed, and the ground beneath Elijah crumbled away.
As he fell into darkness, the last thing he saw was Liam's face, twisted in fear and determination.
The last thing he heard was Morta's cold voice: "Bring me the last true Omega. The final sacrifice."
