Signs and Warnings
"Liam! Don't leave me!" Elijah's voice broke as he held his mate's limp body. Around them, wolves from both packs collected, their new silver markings glowing in the moonlight.
Sage pushed through the crowd, her old hands steady as she knelt beside them. "Let me see him," she ordered.
Elijah couldn't let go. "He's barely breathing," he whispered.
"He gave too much," Sage said, placing her hand on Liam's chest. Her own marks glowed brighter as she closed her eyes. "The binding took almost all his strength."
"What can I do?" Elijah begged. "Take my strength. Take anything."
Sage looked up at him, her amber eyes serious. "That's exactly what you must do. Your bond works both ways. You've shared pain—now share life."
Thorne stepped forward, shocking everyone. "The ancient texts speak of this. The life-sharing." He nodded to Luna, who pulled a small leather pouch from her pocket.
"We brought the sacred herbs, just in case," Luna explained, giving the pouch to Sage.
The old doctor worked quickly, crushing dried leaves and flowers between her fingers. "Make a circle," she directed the gathered wolves. "Join hands. The pack gives strength to its own."
As wolves from both packs made a circle around them, Sage placed the crushed herbs on Liam's chest. "Now, Elijah. Place your hand over the herbs. Feel your life force. Share it freely."
Elijah didn't pause. He pressed his palm against Liam's chest, feeling the faint beating beneath his hand. "Take what you need," he whispered. "I'm here."
The silver markings on his skin flared to life, glowing so bright that the dogs had to shield their eyes. A warm current ran from Elijah into Liam, connecting them more deeply than ever before.
Minutes passed in tense silence. Then, Liam gasped, his eyes flying open. "Elijah?" he breathed.
Relief washed over Elijah's face as he gathered Liam close. "I thought I'd lost you."
"Never," Liam promised weakly. "The bond won't let me go that easily."
Their meeting was cut short by a low rumble. The ground trembled beneath them, and in the distance, the mountain where the Hollow Caves lay began to fall in on itself.
"We need to move," Thorne warned. "This area isn't safe."
Together, the united packs retreated to safer ground, making camp in a clearing deep within Moonlight country. As wolves tended to wounds and shared stories of the fight, Elijah carried Liam to his tent and laid him gently on a bed of furs.
"Rest," he urged, brushing silver-white hair from Liam's face.
"Only if you stay with me," Liam answered, catching Elijah's hand.
Elijah smiled. "Wild wolves couldn't drag me away."
He settled beside his mate, holding him close as both drifted into a tired sleep, their silver markings pulsing gently in unison.
Three days later, the camp was busy with activity. Wolves from both packs worked together, hunting, healing, and rebuilding what had been destroyed in the fight. The strange new markings stayed on everyone's skin, though some glowed brighter than others.
In Elijah's tent, Liam was sitting up for the first time, his power slowly returning. "The packs are really working together," he noticed as Elijah entered with a bowl of stew.
"It's strange," Elijah allowed, sitting beside him. "But good. Thorne's wolves know things we've forgotten. And they're eager to learn what we can teach them."
Liam sipped the warm broth, color slowly returning to his cheeks. "Have you seen Aria today? She promised to visit."
Elijah paused. "I've assigned her to border patrol. There's been... something strange happening."
"Strange how?" Liam asked, quickly alert.
"Animals fleeing. Birds going silent. The scouts report feeling watched, but they can't find anyone." Elijah took Liam's hand. "Aria's elemental senses might pick up what others miss."
Outside the tent, they heard a commotion. Elijah rose quickly, stepping out to see Aria running into camp, her silver-white hair wild around her face.
"Elijah!" she called. "You need to see this!"
Liam climbed to his feet, ignoring Elijah's protests as he followed them out. The three moved to the edge of camp where other wolves were gathering, all looking at the sky.
Dark clouds were building, swirling in an unnatural pattern. And within those clouds, flashes of purple light pulsed like a heartbeat.
"What is it?" someone whispered.
Sage stepped forward, her wrinkled face grim. "The Void is testing its bounds."
"But we sealed it," Elijah said. "Morta is gone."
"Balance is never permanent," Sage answered. "It must be maintained."
Aria pointed to the north. "The energy is strongest there. Near the old stone circle where Kaida first appeared to us."
Liam swayed slightly, leaning against Elijah for support. "I can feel it pulling," he mumbled. "Like it's calling to our markings."
Elijah tightened his arm around Liam's waist. "You're not going anywhere near it. You're still healing."
"We have to do something," Aria urged. "I felt it while on patrol. It's getting stronger."
Thorne joined them, Luna at his side. "My scouts report the same disturbance along the eastern ridge. And there's more." He looked at Luna, who nodded encouragingly.
"What?" Elijah asked.
"Other packs are coming," Thorne said simply. "Word has spread about what happened. About the markings returning. They're curious. Some are afraid."
Elijah's face hardened. "How many?"
"At least five packs that we know of," Luna answered. "Including the Mountain Shadows and the River Pack."
"That's nearly a hundred wolves," Marcus said from behind them. "We don't have enough supplies for that many."
"Or enough space," Aria added. "And if they see those clouds..."
Elijah looked around at the gathering wolves—his pack and Thorne's, now working as one. The silver markings on their skin connected them in ways they were only starting to understand.
"We'll make room," he decided. "And we'll share what we have. If other packs are coming, they need to see us united."
Liam squeezed his hand. "And the Void?"
"We'll deal with that too," Elijah promised. He turned to Aria. "I need you to lead a scouting party. Get close enough to sense what's happening, but do not engage. Take Rook and three others you trust."
Aria nodded. "What about Liam? He's the strongest sensor we have."
"I'm going too," Liam said before Elijah could answer.
"You're barely standing," Elijah protested.
Liam's violet eyes flashed. "This concerns me as much as anyone. My markings were what Morta wanted. If the Void is calling to them, I need to understand why."
They stared at each other, neither willing to back down. Finally, Elijah sighed. "Fine. But you stay with me at all times."
As they prepared to leave, gathering supplies and choosing which wolves would join the scouting party, Sage pulled Elijah away.
"The balance you and Liam created is fragile," she warned. "If something is disturbing it so soon..."
"What are you saying?" Elijah asked.
"I'm saying that what you sealed might be trying to open again," Sage replied softly. "And if it does, I fear it will take more than love to close it this time."
Elijah looked over at Liam, who was deep in talk with his sister. "I won't lose him again."
"That may not be your choice to make," Sage said, her voice heavy with sadness.
Before Elijah could reply, a howl rang out from the northern perimeter. A warning. Then another from the east. And another from the south.
"We're surrounded," Thorne growled, his golden eyes narrowing.
The wolves rushed to defensive positions, Elijah pulling Liam close as they moved to higher ground to see better. What they saw made their blood run cold.
Wolves were rising from the trees in all directions. Not shadow wolves with red eyes, but normal wolves with silver marks glowing on their skin—just like their own.
"The other packs," Luna whispered. "They're here already."
But it was what loomed behind them that made Liam gasp. The dark clouds had moved closer, now hanging directly over the camp. And within those clouds, a face was forming—a face they all recognized.
"Morta," Liam breathed.
"Impossible," Elijah said. "We saw her destroyed."
The face in the clouds smiled, and a voice like thunder rolled across the clearing.
"Destroyed? No, little wolves. Transformed. And now I return to claim what is mine."
The clouds descended quickly, wrapping around the camp like black fog, separating the wolves from each other. Elijah held tight to Liam's hand as darkness closed in around them.
"Stay with me!" he yelled, but his voice seemed swallowed by the fog.
Liam's fingers slipped from his grasp. "Elijah!" he cried, suddenly invisible in the darkness.
Elijah lunged forward, trying to follow Liam's words, but the fog was too thick. Around him, he could hear the confused cries of dogs from all packs.
Then, as suddenly as it had arrived, the fog vanished. Elijah blinked in the sudden brightness, looking wildly around the clearing.
The other wolves were all there, looking just as confused. Thorne, Luna, Marcus, Sage—all present. The wolves from the other packs stood at the edges, wary but unhurt.
But Liam was gone. And Aria too. They had disappeared completely.
In the sky above, the clouds had made a perfect circle, with a center as black as night. And from that darkness came Morta's laughter, booming through the forest like breaking glass.
"The game begins again," her voice announced. "But this time, I make the rules."
