Chapter 152 Scratching the surface. - Miguel POV
I have to get out of this fucking house, and soon. I wanted to see Caroline going through the ringer, I wanted to see her destroyed, but her anguished cries every day from Ben's bedroom is going to drive me certifiably insane.
I think Samuel is putting sleeping pills in her drink at dinner, because she cuts out soon after. Smart move in my opinion, maybe she needs to stay drugged up the way her son drugged everyone.
Father is trying to blow out fires at the firm, but we have lost three major clients already. One client has been with the firm since before Father even took over the reins, a major knock for the firm. The office gossip even told me that they are already looking for other jobs, everybody losing faith that Father will be able to keep the company afloat.
I'm becoming more angry the longer I stay here, and I'm scared I'm taking that anger over to my relationship with Madison. I can't afford to hurt her, I'm already having to rein myself in sexually with her.
I can't lose her because I can't control myself. I swim every morning for at least two hours, it was she only thing keeping me calm and same when I was a teenager. My body feels tired when I'm done, but the anger doesn't go away, it stays simmering under the surface.
For years I've held onto my sanity, but I realise I'm close to bursting.
Riding my motorcycle used to help calm me down, too, but my bike is getting fixed after someone ran me off the road. I have to find out who it is, before it happens again.
I drive over to Raul's place where Lucille is still staying, letting myself in, and I'm surprised to find the two chilling on the couch watching a movie and eating ice cream.
"Are you supposed to be eating that?" I ask Raul.
"It's off season. I deserve a treat now and then for all the shit I had to go through last season." He licks his spoon. "Are you good."
"I don't know." I answer honestly.
I almost have everything I've ever wanted, Madison's stomach is getting more swollen every day with carrying my baby. Her father gave me his blessing if I were to ask for her hand in marriage, even thought I know he really didn't want to. The house is just waiting for us to move into, but with all these things going right in my life, something is still missing.
"Lucille, were you able to find out anything else , like who the fuck Ben was paying to get those drugs?"
She quickly jumps up from the couch, and I follow her to where she set up in the living room.
"You seem quite comfortable here." I note.
"Raul is a great roommate." Is she blushing? "Like he actually cleans up after himself, it's amazing."
"Please mention I clean up after you too." He shouts from the couch.
"That he does." The blush deepens on her cheek.
The two have known each other since Lucille and I started working together. We have all hung out before, too, and she has never had this reaction to him before.
"So, what I found is that Ben didn't electronically transfer any funds aside from the usual bills, right. No, he was very smart, he withdrew large sums of money from his account instead. So whoever he was paying, he did it in cash."
I'm not surprised. My brother was a lot of things, but one thing he was not, was stupid. Maybe he should've gone into criminal law instead, he would've done so well in that field.
"So we still have no idea who his dealer is?"
"Nope." Lucille's fingers fly over her keyboard. "Do you want me to try and hack into Jeffrey Bloomberg?"
"Do whatever you must, because if that drug spreads, this city would be up in flames, and we don't want that." I clear my throat. "I also don't want my child coming into this world with that drug roaming around."
I haven't told them about the baby yet, but Raul comes running to the dining room, his mouth hanging open. "What did you just say?"
"Madison is pregnant." I beam.
Lucille gulps and then she gets up from her chair, coming over to hug me tightly.
"Congratulations." She smiles genuinely at me. "I hope the baby is healthy."
"Wow!" Raul hugs me. "You're finally getting what you want"
"Almost." I nod, knowing he's genuinely happy for me. "That's why I need all the loose ends nicely tied up."
"I'm on it. " Lucille gives me the thumbs up.
"And check if you can't see any faces on that car that ran me over. Whoever is responsible, is going to answer to me."
