Chapter 82 Chapter 82

Chapter 82 Chapter 82

LISA'S POV
I waited uncomfortably outside his office after he asked me to leave him alone. It did not make any sense to me why he was so shocked by the video he received. What could have been so horrible as to have him so shaken?
Suddenly, Duke walked into his office, and shortly after he stepped out, there was movement everywhere. The boys were gearing up for an attack.
Weapons flew over my head as I strutted towards Damien's office.
I almost bumped into Damien as soon as I barged through his door. His eyes looked startled and then upset.
I stepped back from him, giving him space. "What is going on?" I asked, eying his battle-ready stance and the fury steaming off him.
"Victor attacked our base again and killed my men!" He muttered angrily through gritted teeth.
My heart caught in my chest, not another set of murders. "I told you, he is working with Alexander! He just..."
"Not now, Lisa. Now, I have to find him and make sure he gets what he deserves." Damien moved past me briskly and headed for his men.
While they were busy prepping to leave, I let out a sigh, my eyes roaming his office. I caught one of his cabinet drawers open and walked towards it. Shutting the office door tightly, I opened the drawer to see what was inside and found several documents of the same color. They were ledgers of different transactions.
However, underneath them, I found a blue folder that stood out by a tip. I pulled it out, and it had the Confidential stamp on it.
I took in a shaky deep breath, as a feeling of dread bathed me. The hairs on my back stood on end, and I sensed that I should just put it back and leave, but I needed to know.
I opened the document, and a picture fell out. Several pictures were tacked to the document, and as I turned them over, my feet became jelly. I tossed the document down and covered my mouth to stop from throwing up.
"No, no," I muttered over and over, shutting my eyes to blank out the horrid images from my mind. How could he? It wasn't possible. Tears that didn't validate courage slipped and fell. My entire body shook with rage, fear, disgust, and everything that described revulsion.
I picked up the document again, vicious rage rising up in me, and stormed towards his office door, but just as I opened it, there he was.
I was too pissed to even be afraid.  Damien's eyes went from my face to my hand, and when he caught the document in it, I saw the rage in his eyes extend.
He looked at me like an offended beast, as if I had trespassed on something I shouldn't have. "What are you doing with that?" He asked in a quiet, yet threatening tone.
"What is this? All those people. Damien, all those people! You were involved in that!" The document linked Damien to a grand assassination several years back, about the same time he and Victor started having problems.
The agreements on the document stated that Damien had bypassed his partner to get the job done. It was what sparked the feud between him and Victor.
"Give me that." He took the folder from me and put it down on his table. Tears fell from my eyes profusely, and I felt my face redden from how furious I was. I could not shake the cold that crawled up my skin just from looking at those dead bodies, children, women, and men.
"Who are you?" I muttered, watching him move so calmly around the office that it made me feel sick.
"Answer me! What the hell did you do?! Who are you?!" I yelled, and Damien paused catatonically. His eyes expressed the annoyance he refused to show since the moment he walked in.
"How dare you question me? First, you went through my things, and then you have the guts to question me? You have no idea what the full information about that job is, and you think you get to judge." He accused me sternly. His effort to control his voice was evident from the depth and cracked texture in each word.
"You killed people, Damien! All this time, Victor was the villain, but you, you've been hiding in the shadows! You've been hiding all this time!" I yelled out.
"Don't you dare raise your voice at me! Control yourself, Lisa! You are threading a very thin line, you might not be able to come back from." He warned.
"How hypocritical of you, don't you think? Let's just say it isn't what I think,  then how about you tell me the truth, Damien, for once! My life is at risk here, too! I've never demanded anything else."
"How about you fucking trust me for once, Lisa! How about that, huh? You think I have no idea what is at stake? That I enjoy the conflicts! The war!"
"How should I trust you when you never tell me anything?! How?! Have I just been a means to an end in this whole stupid war of yours? Answer me!"
"People die every single day around you, Damien. I am scared shitless, but I try to hold it together.  I try to be brave and help out instead of becoming a liability to you, I try! But you push me away, and you keep me in the dark!"
He covered the distance between us in three strides and cupped my face with his hands, a mix of terror and rage was burned into his eyes.
"Because I don't want to lose you, Lisa! I don't want to lose you. Why can't you see that?"
"The war out there is dark, you said it yourself, people die around me every day..." his hands dropped to his sides, and he stepped back. His face was ashed with guilt and pain.
"You just have to trust me, Lisa. That is the only way you're going to live. And I have to trust you if I'm going to keep you alive." His words were supposed to silence everything. They were meant to put a pause on the moment, but I couldn't stop shaking from the truth of what I had just discovered.
I stared at him in total confusion, unable to decide. Just then, his phone rang.
