Chapter 78 Chapter 78

Chapter 78 Chapter 78
LISA'S POV

"Everyone in this room will be under surveillance until the mole is discovered. Until then, nobody would be trusted. Not even me." Damien stated firmly, dismissing everyone.
The men all filed out of the room, grumbling and murmuring silently as they walked out. Marcus took one sharp, but steady glance at Damien before walking out the door.
"You just let him go?" I turned to Damien, not sure what he was thinking.
"He knows we can't prove his involvement with Alexander without evidence. Meeting transactions, texts, and recordings, but if I can tap his phone, then we will get further information on what their plans are."
"You're right, his phone. We need evidence." I knew that Marcus always held onto his phone securely. There was never a time he made the mistake of leaving it out of his sight for close to thirty minutes.
Every time I got to it, or his room, he was always several steps ahead. As I exited Damien's office, I headed for Marcus's room. I scoured the whole room in search of anything that would prove that he was talking to someone secretly behind our backs.
I had always suspected his treachery, but evidence was always going to be the problem. Proving his guilt was an issue. The room was unusually clean, like he had suspected someone would come fishing, and if anything was slightly out of order, he would know.
His table top was relatively empty with only a few photographs of his family and some documents containing transaction logs. As I picked up the document to search through it, a paper fell out, and I picked it up.
To my surprise, it was a coded message confirming Marcus's next meeting with Alexander and the location. I took a picture of it, carefully placed it back into the document, and closed it.
I put it down and turned to leave, but it wasn't properly placed. So I picked it up again,
"What are you doing here?" I froze at the growl in Marcus' voice. He hadn't been standing there long, had he? I placed the document back down and turned around casually.
"I was looking for you. I wanted to talk, so I decided to wait." I lied blankly.
He observed me carefully, but obviously doubting my story. "Why? Damien sent you to snoop around and gather that evidence he so desperately misses?" He asked.
"I know the idea that I am the mole was your suggestion to Damien. You think that just because you've been in the enemy's lair and heard things, you suddenly know everything?" He asked, taking several slow, steady steps towards me as if taunting his prey.
I stood still, unmoved, and unbothered by his threat. I knew exactly what he was doing. He was desperately trying to get a reaction from me and prove his theory right, but I was not going to give him the benefit of the doubt.
"Actually, I just came to check if you were doing alright. You have worked with Damien for years, and you're right, it was my suggestion that gave him that impression of you. However, watching your reaction to the said accusation made me wonder about two things."
He continued to stare at me expectantly, waiting for my point.
"One, it is either you are really good at faking it, or two, you actually are innocent, and there is somebody else in this house who is the traitor," I concluded.
A smirk tainted his frown, and he looked a little less like a traitor and more like a slimy mastermind.
"Well, have you figured it out yet?" He asked, his gaze on me unwavering.
"Not yet, but I'm sure I will. Even though I was kind of hoping you would make it easy for menand just tell me. Something tells me you won't." I replied.
Marcus nodded and rounded me to the table. He picked up the document and kept it on a top shelf meant for documents that belonged to the organization.
Relief flooded me, and I was tempted to smile. He had no idea that I had already opened it.
"Well, you see, Lisa, sometimes, things are just what they are, and they should be left that way. However, if you do figure out a way to what you think the truth is, then please share the news with Damien or me." He smiled, but I didn't smile back.
I simply nodded and turned to leave. This was the last time I would sneak into his room. I took in a deep breath and let it out, and then, I turned and walked out.
I hurried back to Damien's office. Damien was surprisingly still in the same position as when I left him. It was surprising that he had still been staring in one spot.
"Damien, I found something," I whispered. He turned to me, a crease forming on his forehead.
"What did you find? Where were you?" He asked.
"Well, I took a look around Marcus's room. I found this." I took out my phone and showed him the picture. This is a meeting location at one of Alexander's safe houses." I said, because I recognised it the moment I saw it.
"What makes you certain?" He asked, looking at me with anger flashing in his eyes. Was this evidence? Why did he look like he was about to murder somebody? What had I said?
"Well, I know because that is the safehouse he took me to. I noticed all the landmarks when I was escaping. At least so far, so close. Unless he has some other spot there that they might be meeting. Something closer to the landmarks."
Damien looked at his laptop and typed in the address; several places close to the landmark popped up, even Alexander's safe house was registered as an old mansion owned by an English Broker. There had been no recent updates about his acquisition of the building.
"We will use him. Instead of wondering where the fuck it is, Marcus will lead us to Alexander, and we can expose him there." Damien said angrily.
