Chapter 67 Chapter 67
LISA'S POV
Dust clouds filled the room, and I closed my eyes to the chaos as Damien's frame came into view, and he grabbed one of Alexander's henchmen by his throat and drew his knife across his jugular.
The second man launched at him, and he engaged him in combat. I attempted to launch myself down with the wooden chair, breaking the chair in splinters. I freed myself from the ropes and picked up a broken piece of wood, trying to find an opening to strike Damien's opponent, when Alexander's hands circled my neck and held a gun to my head.
Just then, Damien incapacitated his assailant and two more of Alexander's henchmen seamlessly, and turned, facing us with a gun pointed at Alexander. With his victim's blood staining his shirt and a bleeding cut on his face, he looked like a wild beast ready for war.
I stood frozen, trying my best not to shake, as the gun in Alexander's hand was just a breath away from splitting my head open.
"Well, I'm impressed, Damien. I have to say, you outdid yourself."
"I learnt from the best," Damien said and took a step forward, but Alexander shook his head.
"Uh uh, take one more step from there, and I will have her bleeding here like a Christmas turkey. This was your best choice? A seamstress infiltrating my domain? I would say you could have done better, but seeing the spark on her, I can see why you chose her."
"Get your filthy hand off her!" Damien roared, anger blazing in his eyes so visibly, I felt Alexander shudder behind me.
Damien watched him with hawk-like eyes, waiting for him to make the slightest mistake.
"Atta boy, I always knew you had it in you. The rage of a beast. The hunger of a monster, go ahead, prove how much this pretty girl means to you." He cocked the gun, and he squeezed my neck even tighter.
Damien looked conflicted for a minute. The crease in his forehead deepened, and the menace in his eyes lessened only by a fraction, and one could spot the crack in his demeanor. I was scared shitless, shaking to my bones, I knew I was just a pawn in this whole thing, and maybe I had the most to lose because I was not even as important as the rest of them.
I wanted to trust Damien, I really did, but hadn't he proven time and time again that he was not the hero in this story? How could I trust a man when every single time there was a secret lying somewhere just waiting to be discovered?
How many innocent people had he killed? What was Damien willing to sacrifice to save me? Was he even willing to save me?
Without a second thought, I saw Damien put his gun down slowly. It happened like a flash of light. One minute, he was standing, and the next, he was falling backwards on the floor.
"Nooooooooo!!!!" I let out a bird-like screech as the blast of the bullet, which narrowly slid past my ear, straight through Damien's chest, rendered me momentarily deaf.
I struggled, but Alexander's grip on me was vice-like. He pulled me up, leg kicking in the air as I fought and clawed his hand for freedom, but he did not budge.
"Let me go! Damien!!! Damien!!!!" I screamed out, hot tears burning my eyes as fear clutched my very being. Alexander dragged me out the door and flung me into a waiting car.
"Get the explosives! Rig the building! Make sure he doesn't get out!" Alexander commanded his men.
I did not stop sobbing. How was I to warn Damien now? Nobody was within reach or close enough to reach him. I simply watched in horror as Alexander's men offloaded boxes and boxes of explosives, placing them strategically around the building.
"Let's see how he manages to escape this one now." Alexander muttered.
DAMIEN'S POV
"I'll find you! I'll get her back and I'll kill you, Alexander!" I roared out with a vengeance, as the blurring vision of Alexander dragging Lisa faded and I fell to the ground, unconscious.
I woke up moments later to a searing pain in my chest. My chest burned from where the bullet hit me, but it did not pierce through me. I put my hand within my shirt and pulled out my necklace which had narrowly taken the fall for me. I got up with difficulty, staggering from the pain.
I had to get Lisa back, I had to. Losing her was not an option, and this time, Alexander was going to pay. I took several steps towards the exit and ended up staggering towards a pillar for support.
My legs could not support me, and my body seemed to be losing momentum The harder I tried. Suddenly, the sound of footsteps circled the room, and I looked up, catching sight of a shadowy figure in my dancing vision, as it ran towards me.
"Damien!!! You're losing too much blood. We have to get you out of here. Alexander gave the order. This place will be blown to shreds in less than thirty minutes!" I heard him say as I collapsed from exhaustion.
"Come on!" The voice groaned, putting my weight over his and doing his best to lift me up. The acrid smell of toxins filled the air.
"What is that smell?" I croaked out, doing my best to push forward.
"It's Alexander. He ordered his men to release poisonous gas through the vents. Don't breathe!"
I held my breath, but we had not gone very far, when the first explosion went off, throwing us both several feet in the air as the pillars around us scattered, and a broken boulder crashed into me, pushing me against the wall.
I fell with a painful thud and lost consciousness. All I could think of, was Lisa.
"Damien!! Damien!!" The faint sound of someone calling me tugged at my subconscious mind.
