‘’You’re lying!’’ I screamed as I dropped to the ground. The world seemed to spin as everything came crashing down, making hot tears fall down my face.

‘’You thought he would give you the world because he fucked you? The only thing he will do is take it all from you because my son is broken,’’ she whispered in an angered tone.

‘’I don’t believe you,’’ I responded as I stood back on my feet again. 

‘’Your mouth says one thing and your eyes say another!’’ she said as she turned to go. ‘’Call him right now and ask where he is,’’ she added as she left and shut the door, leaving me in shock.

With a trembling hand, I pulled out my phone from my back pocket and dialed Adrian’s number.

It went unanswered, but the door burst open and there he stood.

Covered in blood!

‘’Did she hurt you?’’ He rushed to my side and checked me while I stared at him, unable to move or scream.

My heart longed for answers, but seeing him covered in blood like this clenched it painfully, as if someone was constantly squeezing the air out of me. 

‘’Did you kill them?’’ I asked in barely a whisper, unsure if he heard me.

He remained silent.

Hot fresh tears began falling, and as much as I hated him seeing me cry, they didn’t stop. I cried for my soul, I cried for my dignity, and I cried for the family I had lost. But most of all, I cried because he had ruined me to the point where no matter what he did, his touch made me shiver.

I should have been cursing him and his entire generation. I should have poisoned him and watched him die a painful death, then fed his body to the lions because he didn’t deserve to be buried. He might have corrupted the soil, making the earth perish along with him.

But why was I silently praying he didn’t pull the trigger?

Why was I constantly hoping that his black heart felt something for me?

Anything?

He pulled me to him and hugged me so tight, like his life depended on it, right before he whispered, ‘’I wanted to. I even shot one bullet.’’

‘’What stopped you?’’ I asked with a shaking voice.

‘’I didn’t care if you hated me as long as you were by my side and I could make you feel pain and pleasure like no one had ever done but that changed,’’ he breathed into my neck.

‘’What happened to ruining me?’’ I asked as my heart pounded so fast I felt like it would jump out of my chest any minute.

‘’I fell in love with you, my little spit fire,’’ he said as he held my face in between his hands. His gray eyes stared at me with an intensity I had never seen before.

‘’But your mother...’’

‘’I’ll handle her. Right now I need you to listen to me carefully,’’ he began, and I nodded.

‘’We are at war. This blood you’re seeing doesn’t belong to just anyone. It’s a declaration of war...’’ he said seriously, and blood drained from my face.

‘’What’s going on?’’ I asked as everything started to confuse me.

‘’The details I can’t share with you no matter how much I want to, so you will just need to do as I say,’’ he responded, and I rolled my eyes.

He smacked my ass playfully. ‘’I’d keep those eyes in check, otherwise I’ll throw you over my knee.’’

‘’In the middle of a war?’’

‘’In the middle of the war,’’ he said as he kissed the top of my head and walked out, leaving me standing in my web of confusion.

Before I could even register what was happening, Lila came bursting through the door.

‘’Ella, what the fuck is going on here!?’’

‘’What do you mean?’’ I asked, pretending to be surprised.

‘’Don’t play bullshit, you look terrible. And why is everyone in this house so armed?’’

‘’I had a moment with Adrian.’’

‘’Did he hurt you?’’ she asked, looking ready to attack, and I almost laughed at the thought of Lila confronting the monster from hell.

‘’No, he was just checking on me. His mum isn’t my biggest fan.’’ 

She sighed and gave me a tight hug. ‘’You can always talk to me. I’m here for you.’’

‘’Thank you so much for coming. I wish you could stay longer.’’ I hugged her back and she laughed.

‘’I’ll be back soon. I’m only a call away,’’ she smiled.

‘’Miss Johns, your car is ready,’’ Jay called out from the hallway.

‘’Well, I guess that’ll be me. Take care.’’

‘’You too,’’ I responded, walking her to the driveway.

We hugged for a bit longer until we eventually had to let go. She stepped into the car and Jay drove her off. I waved goodbye with tears in my eyes but this time, they were tears of joy.

The memory of Adrian telling me that he loved me lingered in my heart, and my center throbbed.

He didn’t pull the trigger because he loved me.

And yet... I couldn’t help but think of the possibility that he might be using me.

‘’Your thoughts are so loud I can hear you all the way from upstairs,’’ his deep voice said behind me as he wrapped his arms around my neck.

‘’I’m just grateful for what you did today,’’ I smiled, even though I knew he couldn’t see my face.

‘’You’re welcome. I came to pick you because we need to have a serious talk.’’ 

How were we supposed to have a serious talk when his hot breath was on my neck and I could barely focus with his erection pressed against me?

‘’Okay,’’ I whispered.

He let me go and reached for my hand, holding it firmly as we walked to the car.
