Chapter 42 Rainy Night Siege
"That Amelia is both stupid and evil, everything she says is a lie." Marcus sat beside me, muttering unhappily.
Ten minutes ago, Lucas confronted Amelia at the airport. She immediately burst into pitiful tears, claiming she'd been used by Byron.
Amelia's acting and lies were pretty rough, but good enough to fool Lucas. At least Lucas was only half-convinced.
Five minutes ago, Lucas escorted the Caldwell family back to the villa, taking Amelia along. I didn't go with them. Only Marcus, Roger, and I remained in the VIP lounge.
Marcus: "That Lucas guy should get his IQ tested."
"Testing his IQ won't help." I shook my head. "Let's not talk about them. Is it going to rain?"
"How long are you two going to sit here chatting?" Roger asked impatiently.
"Wait a bit longer." I glanced at him sideways. "Don't you know how many people you've pissed off? Sure, you dealt with the Langford family, but there are still seven or eight bounties on you in the black market."
I propped my chin on one hand and shrugged. "If we walk out now, we'll get shot halfway there."
"Then why did you even buy me? Wouldn't it be better to let me keep hiding at Silver Eagle Auctions?" Roger's right leg bounced, his iron shackle clanking.
"You think Silver Eagle Auctions would protect you forever?" I shook my head.
Roger took a deep breath and pointed at the shackle. "This thing is so noisy. Isabella, I've joined you guys now. Can I have my freedom?"
"I spent hundreds of millions of dollars on you. What if you run away?" I smiled slightly at him. "Don't worry. When we get back to Platinum Haven Hotel, I'll get you a silent ankle monitor."
Roger glared at me in frustration: "You bitch."
"Don't keep calling her that! Our Bella is the most noble woman!" Marcus slapped Roger hard on the back.
I twitched my lips. Marcus was so over the top!
Marcus picked up his phone, showing a map of Starstream City with several moving green dots.
Earlier, Marcus and I had sent several cars to follow Lucas's convoy out of the airport, and sent some people in disguise to leave through different exits. These dots represented our people.
"Two more gone." Marcus frowned. The attacks hadn't stopped. The green dots were disappearing one by one. One had left the airport just three minutes ago and vanished less than half a mile away.
"Let's go. The airport isn't safe anymore," Marcus said decisively.
Eight of our bodyguards stood in the hallway outside the VIP lounge; no one else was around. Light footsteps came from the end of the corridor. A female attendant in an airport uniform pushed a cart toward us: "Where are you heading? Need me to arrange a car?"
"Get lost." Marcus gave her an icy look.
The attendant's sweet smile vanished instantly. She pressed her back against the wall, looking scared, letting us pass.
Roger shook his head and said to me, "Marcus really doesn't know how to treat women nicely."
As we passed by, I saw the attendant pull a gun from the cart. I immediately shot her in the shoulder.
She screamed. I fired another shot at her knee. Blood splattered and bloomed on the white wall. The woman fell to the ground, her body twitching slightly.
Marcus picked up the gun from the floor and shoved the barrel into her mouth, cutting off her wailing. Then he said to Roger, "I do treat women nicely. I didn't even shoot."
Roger fell silent.
I noticed a leaf-shaped tattoo behind the woman's left ear. I told Marcus, "She's from Chaotic Zone."
"Chaotic Zone?" Roger asked, confused. "What group is that? I don't think I've crossed them."
"They're after Marcus and me," I said. "She definitely has accomplices. Let's move."
As we walked out of the VIP passage, six assassins who'd been lying in wait rushed out. I pulled Roger back through the door. Adrian and Cole stood in front of me protectively.
Marcus excitedly fired back: "Just these few people? s that all they've got?!"
Gunfire rang out continuously, mixed with Marcus's taunts. Roger looked at me with a strange expression: "Marcus is so cocky. Isn't he afraid of getting killed?"
"He's got the skills to back it up." As I finished speaking, the gunfire outside stopped. Walking out, Marcus was crouching by a corpse, searching it: "Bella, these guys are from the Co-governed District."
Roger: "What group is the Co-governed District?"
I briefly explained Starstream City's situation to Roger. He understood, then casually said, "So are we going to run into assassins from the Government District next?"
"Maybe."
We got in the car. After just five hundred yards, we encountered assassins from the Government District. Not many of them—we dealt with them quickly.
Roger clicked his tongue twice: "All these waves of assassinations have nothing to do with me. And you were just going on about bounties."
"The Sorelli family has officially returned. These guys want to test our strength." After my birthday, the calm in Starstream City was just an illusion. Marcus and I even made the news headlines once. Anyone wanting to assassinate us had to think carefully.
But at the auction, I not only casually threw out a billion dollars, but also brought back a priceless diamond crown and a medical genius, Roger, whose value couldn't be estimated.
How could such wealth not make people jealous? If I met someone like that, I'd want to rob her too.
Assassins after Roger also showed up, but stayed back to watch. Probably waiting to take advantage of the chaos.
People waiting for their chance, looking to profit from the confusion, hid beneath the gathering storm clouds. I could smell the damp, bloody scent in the wind. Heavy rain was coming soon.
"Northern District is the only part of Starstream City that hasn't joined in yet, right?" Roger grinned at me. "Your relationship with your ex-husband doesn't seem great. I love watching married couples turn against each other."
Roger was only serious about medicine. Otherwise, he was really unlikable! Bad temper aside, he was incredibly nosy, asking about Lucas and me throughout the trip back.
I glanced at him sideways. "You're probably going to be disappointed."
Roger raised an eyebrow: "You have that much faith in your ex-husband?"
"I have faith in myself." As I spoke, a black car silently approached from behind. I raised my gun. Roger nervously backed away: "I just said 'married couples turning against each other.' Are you really that angry?"
"Get down!" I shouted.
Roger quickly rolled under the seat.
A burst of gunfire rang out.
I blew the assassin's head off. The black car spun out of control toward us. Marcus warned: "Hold on tight!"
I grabbed the handle above the door. Marcus floored it. The black car veered into another pursuing vehicle. The two cars crashed together, erupting in thick black smoke.
Roger climbed up, holding his forehead, then caught sight of over thirty cars blocking the road ahead. He gasped sharply: "Am I going to die here today?!"
I grabbed his collar, lifted him up, and threw him into the back seat. "Buckle up and shut up!"
Marcus spun the wheel all the way. The car turned ninety degrees and raced in another direction.
A surge of gunfire crashed over us like waves. My nose filled with the smell of gunpowder with every breath. The thirty-plus cars gave chase. Our few cars dodged left and right, as small as mice under an elephant's feet.
The situation was critical, but I felt calm with a hint of excitement.
As long as we got through tonight, the four of us siblings could firmly establish ourselves in Starstream City.
