Chapter 35 Chapter 35

Chapter 35 Chapter 35
Pulling at something deep within her.
She could not take her mind off it, Could not push away the feeling.
Everything in her body seemed to change at once, she had been calm just moments earlier, completely unbothered. Now a strange agitation was rising inside her.
Her heartbeat felt different, her thoughts were no longer steady.

She did not know whether it was truly the ring, or merely the weight of the legend attached to it, but one thing became clear in that instant—She had to see it, she had to try.
So, after a brief silence, Megan lifted her head and looked at Liam.
“Well,” she said, “on second thought, I’ve changed my mind, and I will come.”

The moment Megan agreed, Liam could not hide the smile that spread across his face.
It was as though a heavy burden resting on his shoulders had suddenly become lighter.
“Thank you,” he said at once. “Thank you so much for agreeing to come.”
But almost immediately, he realized how eager how unguarded he sounded. For a man in his position, it was a little too obvious, a little too personal, and certainly less professional than he preferred.
So he quickly cleared his throat, adjusted his suit, and tried to regain his usual composure.

“Thank you,” he said again, this time more carefully. “Thank you for accepting the invitation.”
Still, deep down, Liam knew exactly why her agreement mattered so much to him.
If someone like Megan attended that auction, it would mean something.

It would elevate the event, It would bring weight, prestige, and attention, and his family desperately needed that.
This was not just another gathering of collectors and wealthy bidders.
This auction mattered.
His family had remained under the radar for far too long, overshadowed, underestimated, and struggling to reclaim the influence they once held. This event was their chance to make a statement to remind people that their name still carried significance in the world of rare antiquities.

And Liam was determined to do everything humanly possible to make sure that happened.
Megan, however, did not seem interested in explaining much.
She only said calmly, “Something caught my attention. I will come and see it tomorrow.”
Liam nodded, though his curiosity grew stronger.

Then, after a brief pause, he asked, “What if I come pick you up myself?”
Megan shook her head lightly.
“No,” she said. “That wouldn’t be appropriate. Just give me the location, and I’ll come by myself. You don’t need to come and pick me up.”
But Liam did not back down.
“That is because you are a VIP,” he said respectfully. “The fact that I personally invited you already means you are not an ordinary guest. Someone of your caliber should not be left to arrive on her own without proper regard.”

His voice remained polite, but there was a sincerity in it that made it difficult to dismiss him.
“I will come and pick you up myself,” he continued. “Please, don’t refuse. Consider it my little way of thanking you for accepting to come.”
He hesitated briefly, then added more honestly, “This auction is a personal matter for my family, and despite that, you still agreed to attend. So this is the least I can do to show my appreciation.”
A faint, almost helpless smile touched his face.
“Truthfully, there is nothing I could offer that would be enough for someone like you, but at the very least, allow me to do this much.”

Before Megan could say another word, Liam suddenly bowed again this time even deeper than before.
His upper body bent so low that it seemed as though his head might nearly touch his knee.
Megan looked at him and immediately understood.
Even if she refused now, he would only continue insisting, and perhaps even feel offended or troubled by her rejection.
So after a brief pause, she gave a small nod.
“Well,” she said, “no problem then, since you insist.”

At once, Liam’s face brightened with barely concealed excitement.
He looked genuinely relieved almost delighted and this time he did not even bother trying to hide it.
Without wasting another second, he reached into his pocket, brought out his business card, and handed it to Megan.

“This is my number,” he said. “Please… may I have yours as well?”
Megan hesitated for the briefest moment.
She was not particularly used to all these modern formalities. The sleek phone Liam was holding looked large and advanced, nothing like the one she carried. The phone she still used was an old model she had owned long before she ever went to prison a model she knows had already been outdated.

Still, she remembered her number clearly.
“I don’t have a card,” she said. “But I can tell you my number.”
Liam immediately nodded and took out his phone properly, ready to save it.
Megan recited the number to him.
He entered it at once, then called her immediately, just to make sure he had saved the right contact and would not lose any way of reaching her.

A second later, Megan’s phone began to ring.
She reached for it and pulled it out.
It was a small foldable phone with buttons the kind that had almost disappeared from public use years ago, the moment Liam saw it, his expression changed ever so slightly.
That phone was ancient by modern standards.

Almost nobody used such a device anymore. Newer models had long pushed phones like that completely out of the market. As far as he could remember, that type had been popular nearly a decade ago, if not more.
And in that instant, a strange realization settled over him.
Something about Megan’s life was even more unusual than he had first assumed.
Because someone like Megan should not have been using a phone like that.
