Chapter 85 When the Man Chuckled, Thalia Was Dazed.....
Thalia was about to mention she had a friend with her when she turned around.
Evelyn had vanished.
Back in the locker room, she found a message from Evelyn on her phone: "Enjoy yourself, I won’t intrude."
When Thalia and Elon arrived at the place, she realized it was a comedy club restaurant.
"Mr. Wilson is here?"
The restaurant manager seemed to recognize Elon and greeted him while handing over the menu.
Elon took the menu and handed it to Thalia. The manager's expression changed when he saw Thalia.
Wasn't she that pure-hearted celebrity from the entertainment industry?
Thalia seemed to sense the manager's scrutiny and looked over, meeting his gaze. "Do you know me?"
The manager quickly responded, "Yes, yes, everyone here is a fan of yours."
Thalia usually didn’t pay much attention to such comments.
After the manager left, Thalia looked at Elon. "You know the owner?"
"Yeah, used to be in the restaurant business abroad. We met during an evacuation when their country was in turmoil. We found out we were both from Emerald City and hit it off."
As Thalia finished ordering, she rested her chin on her hand and looked at Elon. "Mr. Wilson, your life must be pretty exciting?"
Elon was taken aback by her choice of words.
"Not really."
"Why not?"
"Life and death aren’t exciting; they’re just inevitable parts of life. Whether protecting the country or dealing with internal and external threats, it’s all dangerous. Only those who live in a stable, long-term peaceful society can call their lives exciting. We don’t qualify."
Thalia didn’t expect Elon to talk about his work, even if just a little. People in his line of work usually kept things close to the chest.
And yet, Elon wasn’t being secretive with her.
"If saving a life earns you merit, Mr. Wilson, you must have a lot of good karma."
"That’s great. My mom’s cat only has nine lives. You must have more than that."
Elon chuckled at Thalia’s whimsical thinking.
As he lowered his head and smiled, the dimples on his cheeks deepened, and Thalia found herself momentarily entranced.
She had always appreciated beautiful things, including men.
Elon’s dimples seemed to draw her in. She reached out, wanting to poke one, but stopped halfway.
Elon’s expression shifted from surprise to anticipation.
When Thalia withdrew her hand, he felt a strange sense of disappointment.
Thalia coughed awkwardly. "I’m going to the restroom."
As she turned, she patted her chest. Thank goodness she controlled herself; otherwise, she’d have confirmed her reputation as a flirt.
Thalia had just stepped out of the restroom when a man blocked her path. She raised an eyebrow at him. "Hey there, beautiful!"
A pick-up attempt?
Thalia laughed. Did he not recognize her?
She leaned against the wall, arms crossed, and looked at him with a playful smile. "What’s so great about me? Go on, explain."
The man was flustered.
Thalia raised an eyebrow. "Didn’t you say I’m great?"
"It’s just a way to say hello," he stammered, clearly not used to someone like Thalia.
It was just a pick-up line, but she wanted him to elaborate. What kind of nightmare was this? If he had that skill, he’d be in an Ivy League school.
Thalia found it boring and was ready to leave.
"Are you alone? Let’s grab a drink."
"Can’t you see I’m with someone?" Thalia shot him a glance.
"Have you had any strange experiences lately? I see a child following you," Thalia said, frowning as she looked behind him.
The man broke into a cold sweat. A woman had recently claimed she was pregnant with his child, and he had taken her for an abortion.
Seeing his pale face, Thalia continued, "The child says you’re his dad."
The man swallowed hard, his voice trembling. "Did you really see that?"
Thalia shrugged. "Believe what you want. I don’t know you."
"Don’t go," the man grabbed her arm as she turned to leave.
"Can you really see things?" he asked, scared.
Thalia smiled. "Sure, but why should I help you?"
"What do you want?"
"Five hundred thousand dollars."
"Deal."
What a fool, Thalia thought, feeling delighted.
Elon watched Thalia happily take the money, his mouth twitching.
"You can see things?"
Thalia was startled by his sudden question and shot him a playful glare. "You scared me."
"I was lying to him!"
"That’s illegal."
"I’ll give it back if he asks."
"You’re just like…" Thalia stopped herself, realizing she was about to say something she shouldn’t.
Elon’s eyes darkened, knowing exactly what she meant.
Just like William.
Thalia returned to her seat, watching the waiter bring their food. She generously told Elon, "Today’s on me!"
Elon smiled. "With the money you conned?"
"Disgusted? I earned it fair and square."
Elon chuckled, rubbing his forehead in exasperation.
…
The comedy show in the restaurant was abruptly interrupted by an angry voice over the microphone.
"Raymond Carter!"
Thalia was taken aback.
Elon gently told her, "That’s the man you just conned."
"What’s his connection to Elowen?"
"They’re engaged," Elon explained.
The Mitchell family and the Carter family had been at odds for years, but recently made peace through Elowen and Raymond’s engagement.
They were quite notorious in their circles.
Raymond was reckless, and Elowen was arrogant. She felt the Carter family was no longer as prestigious and didn’t deserve her.
Elowen wanted to belittle Raymond, but he didn’t care about her at all.
Thalia was intrigued. She turned her chair to face Elon.
Elon smiled at her antics. Thalia was different from the rumors.
"How did someone from the high-and-mighty Mitchell family end up with a good-for-nothing like Raymond?"
Elon took her cup and poured her some coffee. "The Mitchell family isn’t what it used to be, and neither is Thalia. Their arrogance and prejudice made them think it’s better to marry each other, knowing their backgrounds and being able to support each other."
