Chapter 389 Amara Went to the Police Station
"Someone from above is investigating us," William had just taken Thalia's hand to go downstairs and hadn't even pulled out a chair to sit down when he got a call from Angelina.
"Who?"
"We're tracking them. The situation isn't clear yet, but we traced the IP address to overseas."
"If it's overseas, have James handle it."
"Got it. About those people from the Jimenez family, when are you planning to send them away? Steven seems to be contacting people to make connections. I got a call today."
"What did they say?"
"Nothing much really, just asking around. But there was a probing tone to everything."
"If they haven't come directly to me, it's not a real problem. Don't panic." William gave her a few pointers and hung up.
Fallon brought out the last dish, and after getting William's signal, withdrew.
Leaving the dining room to the two of them.
"Running into trouble?"
"The Jimenez family matter."
"I see. I'm actually quite curious - why is Steven so determined to drag you to Regal City to get involved in this mess? Is he out of options? Or are you his best option among all his options?"
"Is he really trying to bring you to Regal City to go after your birth mother?"
"Is he that sure you'll definitely side with him against your birth mother?" Thalia took a sip of soup, seemed to find it quite good, and scooped another spoonful.
"I'm the best stepping stone for him to reap the benefits."
Thalia complained, "Really shameless."
"How many decent people got remarried in that era? I see that Eileen is so stuck-up; you can tell she wasn't easy to deal with when she was young. Someone like that, I bet she was helpful for his career, otherwise why would he abandon his own wife?"
Thalia cursed while finishing a bowl of soup.
William watched her, half-smiling as he pushed his soup toward her.
"No thanks."
"You've been cursing for a while, wet your throat."
Thalia shot him a look. "I'm standing up for you, you know?"
"I know." How could William not see that?
He loved this protective side of Thalia. Only at times like these could he feel like he was actually her husband.
Otherwise, he had absolutely no special privileges with Thalia.
It was a bit too humble.
"Then why are you smiling?"
"I'm happy."
"Happy about what?"
"Happy you're cursing people out for me."
Thalia said, "Does Amara study brains? Haven't you considered having her take a look at you?"
"I'm more normal than her."
Thalia thought to herself, 'That's actually true.'
Meanwhile, Amara, who was just about to get off work, was dragged by the hospital director to handle an emergency case.
She grumbled reluctantly, "Can you stop doing such inconsiderate things?"
"Don't working people have off-duty hours? You always wait until quitting time to come find me."
Everyone at the hospital knew that Amara's temper was as big as her skills.
If Amara showed even the slightest hint of wanting to leave this hospital, other hospitals would come with high salaries to poach her. The director had no choice - knowing she was talented, he had to coax and cajole her to stay year after year.
Fortunately, Amara wasn't malicious. She came from a good family, with parents who were university teachers.
And her brother was a philanthropist.
She didn't need money, otherwise she would have left long ago.
"This really isn't up to me. The patient was rushed to the emergency, has heart problems, and is a registered retired official. I can't send them to another hospital. If I actually did that and something happened to them on the way to another hospital, I'd have to step down."
"They've been receiving treatment in Regal City all along, with dedicated care and monitoring. They came to Emerald City for a vacation, and this happened."
"Okay, okay, I won't say anymore," she couldn't stand the director's earnest persuasion. Whenever there was something she wasn't willing to do, he became especially long-winded. "Let's go... let's take a look."
When the people in the emergency room saw the director bringing Amara, they all made way.
As Amara reached for a mask and gloves, she immediately spotted Stefan standing in the crowd.
Their eyes met. Amara had an ominous feeling, her first instinct was to call William.
But before she had time to think it through, the emergency staff pushed her to the patient's bedside.
"Have they had surgery before? Did you bring previous medical records?"
"Yes," Stefan handed the examination materials to Amara. She picked up the films and looked - weren't these the same films Stefan had brought to her before?
The director didn't know about that situation, but Amara did.
The person lying on the bed should be from the Jimenezes. She didn't want to take the case, didn't have that much professional ethics. Instinctively, she didn't want to.
"Have they had surgery?"
"No."
"Contact your doctors in Regal City. We can only control it with medication for now. The specific treatment plan should still be determined by the doctors in Regal City."
Before Stefan could speak, Eileen nodded repeatedly, "Okay, okay, you control it first, we'll contact the doctors in Regal City right away."
Amara worked for over half an hour to get the patient into a hospital room.
As soon as she came out, the director grabbed her. "Hard to treat?"
"Not exactly, I just don't want to treat them."
The director looked around, and seeing no one had heard this, quickly pulled her aside. "Do you know what would happen if the patient's family heard you say that?"
"Do you know that the person who handed over the medical records had already brought me these films to look at before? Have you ever seen someone get a second opinion like that?"
"They clearly don't trust us, and we're still supposed to go out of our way to make things difficult for ourselves? Isn't that ridiculous?"
The director fell silent.
Amara patted his shoulder. "You'd better pray nothing happens tonight!"
She had this ominous feeling.
In the middle of the night, the nurses at the ward nurses' station were on night duty, relying on coffee to stay alert.
Suddenly, a bell rang from a ward.
The nurse had just stood up and hadn't left the station when people from the room rushed out frantically shouting for a doctor.
As soon as the on-duty doctor entered, he saw the person lying on the bed convulsing.
"What kind of hospital is this? Are you competent or not? Why is it getting worse?"
"Do you know who's lying on that bed?"
"Get your director here."
........
"Mr. Brown, there's trouble."
In the middle of the night, Fallon knocked on the master bedroom door at Mistwood Hill. Thalia was sleeping soundly and grumbled impatiently at being woken up.
William propped himself up halfway and pulled her into his arms to comfort her. After three to five minutes, when Thalia's grumbling stopped, he got up to open the door.
