Chapter 191 A Woman Kneels Before William
When Aaron's voice came from beside her, Thalia looked over: "Beautiful things are more attractive."
"See that middle-aged man next to him?"
"What about him?" Thalia followed Aaron's gaze. When she first spotted him, she'd already recognized this was the person she saw at the club yesterday.
The man Nora wanted to cozy up to.
"The biggest industrialist in Emerald City, CEO of the Lowe Group. His status isn't any less than what your dad used to have."
"It's just that the internet has been developing so fast these past few years, and he didn't catch the chance to transform his business. But he's still got the power. When a middle-aged businessman like that bows and scrapes to a young guy, do you know what that means?"
Thalia thought for a moment: "He's really impressive?"
"Business tycoon," Aaron's assessment of William was simple and blunt.
If it weren't for people in business circles who had explained William to him, he probably wouldn't know how powerful this person was right now. He controlled the most cash flow in all of Emerald City. Businessmen and powerful people all wanted to get on his good side.
As long as you got in good with him, everything else was easy.
A tycoon?
Thalia thought to herself, was she really this lucky? A fading female celebrity like her had actually hooked up with a wealthy tycoon.
While Aaron was explaining all this to Thalia, he kept watching the stage. Suddenly something occurred to him, and he turned to look at her: "I heard you were trying to hook up with William a while back?"
"What do you mean 'hook up'? This is called normal networking," Thalia wasn't happy.
Aaron glanced at the figure in the first row, then looked at Thalia: "Did you succeed in networking?"
"Sort of!"
Aaron was speechless. He'd done something stupid. Thalia and William already knew each other, and here he was seriously explaining William to Thalia.
The Film & Television Awards Ceremony began. Several popular TV shows and movies from last year were nominated, while Thalia could only sit obediently in the back waiting for the event to end.
During this time, she watched people on stage receiving awards while admiring William's thick head of hair.
She took out her phone and sent William a message on Messenger.
"How come you're not bald yet?"
William took out his phone and glanced at it. When he saw Thalia's message, the corner of his mouth twitched.
He couldn't be bothered to reply. He shoved his phone back in his pocket and turned to respond to Kurt.
Thalia shook her head.
After the ceremony ended, everyone moved to the reception hall.
Thalia lifted her dress and walked over. The backless mermaid gown sparkled with tiny diamonds. What made this dress expensive was its craftsmanship. A simple mermaid gown might be nothing special, but a mermaid gown covered in diamonds was worth a fortune.
Everywhere Thalia went, other female celebrities paled in comparison.
No matter how beautiful or exquisite their gowns were, they weren't worth mentioning next to this diamond-studded dress.
The further Thalia walked toward the center of the venue, the more hostility she received.
At first, people gossiped behind her back, but gradually it turned into sarcastic remarks to her face.
"If you didn't know better, you'd think she was here to receive an award, dressing so flashy."
"She wasn't even nominated. She's just here as an audience member."
"Being an audience member and dressing so flashy, how ridiculous."
Thalia had just walked past the crowd when she saw a group of women huddled together talking badly about her. She lifted her chin slightly and said with apparent regret: "Nowadays, some people's jealousy is just so inexplicable. If they don't have something, they won't let others have it either. Is this something a human being would do? How about I contact a zoo for you, and you can go in for some reformation?"
"Who are you talking about?" Someone's face turned red from her retort.
"I don't know who I'm talking about. Why don't you tell me?"
"Thalia, aren't you being kept by someone? That necklace around your neck was auctioned off last month for ten million dollars. They say a man bought it, claiming he'd take it home to give to his wife. Now it's appearing on your neck today. Did you become someone's mistress?"
Thalia's face turned pale. This necklace was something William had pulled out from under the couch this morning, saying a client gave it to him and he had no use for it, so he gave it to her.
This was the so-called gift from a client?
"Not saying anything? Did I hit the mark?"
Thalia came back to her senses and smiled: "Well, you'd better be careful. If I'm planning to be someone's mistress, you should keep an eye on your dad. Who knows, if you piss me off someday, I might just go become your stepmother."
"You..." The other person raised her wine glass, about to throw it at her.
"Want to splash me? You'd better think it through. Can you afford to pay for this dress I'm wearing?"
The person held back her impulse.
"Elsinora, forget it."
Someone held back Elsinora Vossk. That person looked at Thalia and nodded apologetically: "She has a quick temper. Ms. Smith, please don't mind her."
Thalia recognized the person in front of her. Even if she hadn't known her before, she knew her now after today's ceremony. This was Ismerie Glentworth, who had just won Best Actress.
She let it go, not wanting to get tangled up with them.
......
"Mr. Brown." In the center of the venue, William was surrounded by several business tycoons when Finn suddenly rushed in and said something in his ear.
William's long eyelashes trembled slightly. He looked at everyone and excused himself.
He followed Finn's steps out of the banquet hall.
Thalia saw William leaving from afar, his steps somewhat urgent.
She lifted her dress and followed.
William had just reached his car when a slender figure knelt before him, hair disheveled, face deathly pale: "Mr. Brown, please help me! I don't want to live like this anymore. I've done everything I was supposed to do. Please help me!"
"Please."
The woman spoke while clutching his pant leg, constantly knocking her head on the ground.
"Please, they're inhuman. I've really had enough. Mr. Brown, please help me, help me, okay?" The woman's trembling voice wailed in the parking garage, her choked sobs like the wailing of a lost soul before it scattered.
William was always cautious. Both the parking garage entrance and the elevator hall exit were guarded by his people.
Even the hotel's surveillance room had his people.
First and foremost, he had to make sure no one could see this scene.
William stood with his back straight, looking down at her, his eyes as cold as the grim reaper, as if the life or death of the person before him couldn't stir even half a shred of compassion in him. He extended his hand toward Finn, who sensibly handed him a cigarette and lit it for him.
The cold wind in the parking garage dispersed the smoke William exhaled, accompanied by a mocking, merciless tone: "Do you know what it means to break a contract halfway through?"
