Chapter 313 I Am a Person of Great Depth, You Have Just Verified It
"So many? Which one is mine?"
"Yours is on the sofa."
"What about all these on the floor?"
"For the families."
To show he treated everyone equally, William had prepared gifts for everyone.
Thalia didn't even bother putting on her shoes. She walked barefoot to the sofa, grabbed the familiar orange bag, and opened it. When she saw the purse inside, her eyes lit up.
"Rare leather! William, how generous!"
"Happy now?"
"Very happy."
"Shallow."
Thalia huffed. "That's nonsense. I'm a person of great depth. You just verified that yourself, didn't you?"
"Thalia, you don't have an ounce of shame that girls are supposed to have."
"If I did, could I have married you?"
William couldn't be bothered to debate the concept of shame with her. He glanced at the stuff on the floor. "If you're free, take these things to Amara."
........
"Gifts?"
"What gifts?" Amara was a bit surprised when she got Thalia's call.
"Gifts your brother brought back from his business trip. I'm in the parking lot, come down and get them."
In a place like a hospital, walking in openly with them might affect people, so Thalia was being cautious.
Soon, Amara came down in her white coat, got into Thalia's SUV, and was puzzled when she saw the various gift bags in the back seat. "Out of the blue, he goes on a business trip and brings us gifts? What's going on?"
"He's never brought you gifts before?"
"He's so busy, where would he find time to buy us gifts? Never has. Usually, he just gives us cards, simple."
Thalia was speechless.
Amara leaned over to check the bags, then looked at Thalia. "Thanks to you."
Thalia found it hard to believe. William brought gifts every time he went out! She thought he treated everyone the same! Turns out it was special treatment just for her? She felt a warm feeling inside. What was going on?
"Still working this afternoon? Want to grab lunch?"
"Nope, I worked the night shift last night, then added a surgery this morning. My shift is over. Come on, come upstairs with me while I change, then let's go have fun!" Amara pulled Thalia into the elevator. When they reached the floor where the offices were, they saw a crowd gathered by a window - security guards, the department head, the hospital director, all assembled, and someone was even calling the police.
"What's going on?" Amara was curious. She'd never seen such a scene in the inpatient department.
"From the looks of it, someone's about to jump," Thalia guessed.
"Don't say that. Let me go see what's happening." Amara squeezed through the crowd. When she got to the inner circle, she saw a young man, around twenty years old, sitting on the windowsill about to jump.
And he was her patient.
Seeing this, Amara's mouth twitched. Thalia actually guessed it right - incredible.
"Why jump? Hasn't your condition been improving?"
"Dr. Anderson, I can't afford the treatment!" The young man looked dejected, sitting on the windowsill with no will to live, the despair on his face beyond words.
Amara's heart sank. As a doctor, this was the last thing she wanted to hear.
In the crowd, people were quietly discussing the situation.
"Lost both parents when he was young, lived with his grandparents. Then, when he went to college, both grandparents passed away one after another. Finally graduated and found a decent job, but less than a year into work, he was diagnosed with this disease. He's the only one left in his whole family."
"Probably doesn't have much will to live anymore."
Listening to everyone's comments, Thalia thought, this boy's life was truly miserable enough.
All the bad scripts had piled up on him alone.
"Don't do anything rash, I'll figure something out! There's always a solution. The disease you have is expensive to treat, but it's not terminal. If you get better, you can live another twenty, thirty, even forty or fifty years. Death ends everything - if you die, you'll have nothing, let alone a chance to live. The doctors are willing to help you find a way, so you absolutely cannot give up."
"I don't want to give up either, but I really can't afford the treatment."
"Come down first, I'll figure something out." As Amara spoke, her eyes frantically searched the crowd for something.
When she saw Thalia, she grabbed her arm and pulled her over to the young man.
"Thalia..."
Thalia's eyebrows twitched. Her masked face showed no expression as she lowered her voice. "So I'm your solution?"
"It's a matter of life and death!"
"Is this how you usually trap William?"
Caught red-handed, Amara felt a bit embarrassed. "How can you call it trapping? If everyone gives a little love, the world will become a beautiful place."
"Look, you're doing good for humanity!"
Amara tugged at Thalia. "Help out, it's a living person!"
"Someone's willing to help pay for your treatment. Come down first. It's not that big a deal."
Amara held onto Thalia with one hand, afraid she'd run away, while persuading the young man sitting on the windowsill.
He clearly didn't quite believe it. Seeing this, Thalia felt that since Amara had already said this much, if she didn't agree and he jumped, it would affect her reputation.
If it were anyone else, Thalia definitely wouldn't be willing - after all, moral blackmail was no small matter. But who told her it was Amara? Might as well help her all the way, and tonight she'd go ask William for the money.
Double the amount!
"Really... really?"
Thalia sighed helplessly, took off her hat, pulled down her mask, and looked at the young man on the windowsill. "Do you recognize me?"
Before the young man could say anything, there was an uproar all around.
Thalia continued, "I asked Dr. Anderson - your illness needs seven hundred thousand dollars. Tomorrow I'll have my assistant come to the hospital to pay your fees. I'll cover all your hospitalization and surgery costs. Don't worry, get proper treatment. Your good life has just begun - if you end it now, can you face the family members who raised you?"
Hearing the last sentence, the young man bent over and burst into tears. The firefighters hiding nearby seized the opportunity to grab him around the waist and pull him back inside.
Seeing that he was safe, Thalia prepared to leave.
Before she could get out of the crowd, chaos erupted. "You're Thalia, right?"
"Oh my god! What are you doing here?"
Seeing everyone was relatively well-behaved, Thalia smiled. "My family member is Dr. Anderson's patient. I came to visit Dr. Anderson. Everyone, please disperse if there's nothing else - hospitals shouldn't be noisy."
..........
"Layla, Thalia's in the news."
Hearing that Thalia was in the news, Layla panicked. "Good news or bad news?"
"Good news."
The staff member handed their phone to Layla. Looking at the video content, Layla breathed a huge sigh of relief. "Have someone write a press release, promote it."
"Got it, I'll do it right away."
Layla was about to call Thalia when Thalia's call came first.
