Chapter 277 William Hands Her a Cup of Water
"Found it. Zephyrine didn't handle this herself. She had people around her go through four or five layers of connections before it reached her hands. Tracing it back was like unraveling silk threads, extremely difficult. I have to say, this woman really knows what she's doing. Even if you want to hold her accountable, she has ways to deny everything."
"Where's the first person who handled it?" William asked.
"A bartender at a bar in the next city over. Don't waste your energy - I already took care of him. He's barely clinging to life now," Daniel knew what William was thinking.
He might not say it out loud, but he was probably fuming inside. Otherwise, he wouldn't have spent the whole day at Mistwood Hill with Thalia.
Besides, he was domineering and protective of his own people. There was no way he'd just stand by when someone messed with them.
Hearing Daniel's words, William's expression darkened. "Got someone watching Zephyrine?"
Daniel replied, "Yeah, we're watching her. But those activities they run are kept secret. Regular people can't get in, and we don't know where they are. The locations change every time. Even if someone reports it, with Zephyrine there, those people don't dare touch her."
That was true. Kurt's reputation in Emerald City still carried weight - ordinary people couldn't touch her.
"Keep an eye on the people from last night's list. See if Zephyrine tries to blackmail them," William said.
"Got it," Daniel thought to himself that this Zephyrine was really something, daring to play the blackmail game, and targeting rich people no less. Those wealthy ladies, even if divorced, still had business ties with their ex-husbands, or held company shares. They couldn't afford to make too much of a scene. As long as Zephyrine didn't ask for too much, those people would probably think it's better to avoid trouble and just pay up.
She really understood the psychology of wealthy people.
"How'd it go?" William hung up the phone. Thalia was holding a cup, drinking water. A teapot sat on the nightstand. Amara had said she needed to drink lots of water today.
"Found out, but it's tricky," William repeated what Daniel had said. Thalia went quiet, thinking it over.
"If that's the case, can't we blackmail her too?"
William was speechless.
Thalia continued, "Fight fire with fire. If Zephyrine dares to do this, she must think it's foolproof. How about I play along with her? You want the Lowe Group, right? Based on how many times you've dealt with Kurt, do you think Kurt knows what Zephyrine is doing?"
William thought for a moment. "Unlikely."
"So? Breaking down the enemy starts from within," Thalia had learned plenty of this from Hayden growing up. The methods weren't exactly clean.
It was all about winning and losing.
William took the cup from her hand and refilled it. "Your dad taught you this?"
"Does this kind of thing need teaching?"
William raised an eyebrow. "It doesn't?"
"No, it's just survival instinct."
"Do you know that what you call survival instinct is something many people never learn in their entire lives?"
Thalia laughed at William's words. "William, the circle you're born into and the city you live in determine a person's path. The fact that they never learn these things has nothing to do with me. I can't feel guilty just because there are people in this world living in poverty, can I? I'm an ordinary person, not a savior. I shouldn't have to think about that."
William didn't argue with Thalia. He handed her the water cup. "Drink."
"Can't drink anymore."
"Amara said it takes at least three days to dilute it. If you don't want to be stuck indoors, you'd better drink more water."
If she went out and someone got a blood sample from her, that would be the end of it.
Thalia reluctantly picked up the cup and drank.
.........
"Why are you here again?" Amara looked at Stefan sitting in her office, feeling annoyed. Was this guy determined to get his way? Insisting on arguing with her?
David looked at the man sitting in Amara's seat, worried she'd offend Stefan. He reached out to stop her. "Mr. Rogers, are you feeling unwell somewhere? I can check you out."
"I want to chat with Dr. Anderson."
"We have nothing to chat about. You're not even sick, but do you know that by sitting here, you're wasting medical resources?"
"Amara..." David called out to her, pulling her arm as they left the office, walking all the way to the hospital's hot water room.
He asked in a low voice, "Do you know who that person is?"
"Who?"
David didn't say directly. He pulled out his phone, searched for a name on Baidu, and showed it to her.
When Amara saw the name, she fell silent. She didn't know him personally, but she'd seen him on TV.
No wonder the director valued him so much - turns out his background was really that impressive.
"Now I'm even more confused. With such a deep background and being in Regal City, what kind of doctor can't he find? Why does he have to come here looking for me? I'm not the best person in this field."
"But you're the best young person in this field."
Amara was speechless.
David added, "The director said he donated a huge sum to the hospital. With his background, he's not someone we can afford to offend. Treat him well, be patient. I don't think he really wants you to treat him - he probably has something he wants to talk to you about."
Amara held back her frustration.
She followed David back into the office, having just composed herself, only to find the person had left.
"Where is he?"
"He got a phone call and left in a hurry."
Amara looked at David and shrugged.
Indicating that since he'd left, it wasn't her problem anymore.
David was speechless.
After work that evening, Amara went to Mistwood Hill. Thalia was sitting on the sofa playing with the cat, with a recently popular entertainment variety show playing on the TV.
"How are you feeling? Any better?" Amara asked.
Thalia replied, "Much better, thanks to you."
"Looks like that kind of event isn't for ordinary people. Don't take what I said to you last night seriously. If there are events like that in the future, don't bring me along - I can't handle it."
Thalia was speechless.
"Did you go see Layla? How is she?" Thalia asked.
Amara replied, "Went to see her. Her situation is similar to yours. I told her not to leave the house for the next week to avoid any problems."
"Mm," Thalia responded lazily.
Amara's eyes swept around the room. "Where's William?"
"Upstairs in the study, working."
"I'll go talk to him about something."
"I suggest you wait. Once he's in the study, he usually doesn't come out easily," Thalia's words made Amara, who had just stood up, sit back down.
