18- A Terrible Argument
THERESE’S POV.
The clouds turned gray, and the birds flew back to their nests. I saw how desperate they were to go home, like any being living in the forest. Then I remembered Trevor.
He was supposed to be home before dusk, but he was nowhere to be found. I’ve heard the battle has ended, yet he chose to go somewhere without my knowledge.
To vent my anger, I asked Jeda to prepare the chariot. I wanted to see him myself and know what was going on.
“Is everything ready?”
Jeda gasped from behind. She knew that I was angry, and her silence was the only thing I needed.
“Y-yes, my lady. But this is not the right time to go out in the middle of darkness! It is too dangerous for you.”
“SILENCE!”
“I never asked your opinion!”
I raised my voice at her.
Then I walked toward the door, eager to leave as soon as possible.
But Jeda ran closer and didn’t give up. She grabbed my wrist and kneeled to the ground to stop me.
“Please, don’t leave! It’s too dangerous, my lady!”
The more she tried to convince me, the more it pushed me to leave. I couldn’t stay at home, wondering about my mate's whereabouts. I must see him at once, or else it would be the beginning of a chaotic argument.
“Stay with the twins. That’s the only thing I want you to do right now.”
Without hesitation, I walked through the door. Leaving the twins with Jeda was the hardest thing I had ever done.
“Lady Therese!”
“Please, don’t do this!”
Jeda’s voice echoed around, but I ignored it.
“I apologize, but I have to do this,” I thought.
I didn’t want to make things complicated, but Trevor gave me a reason.
He knew that I was upset about what he did earlier, yet he didn’t do anything about it. I was expecting an apology.
“Wait for me, Trevor! I’ll show you who I am.”
I murmured.
From a distance, I saw my servant standing next to the chariot. As soon as he noticed my presence, he looked away and tilted his head as a sign of respect.
“Let’s go!”
I was about to go inside when he gasped. He looked me in the eyes, and I saw how afraid he was of me.
“This is too dangerous for you, my lady. I apologize for talking to you this way, but Lord Trevor told me to protect you no matter what happens.”
I raised my eyebrows and looked back at him. If I were an abusive werewolf, I would have ripped off his face for telling me what to do. But I controlled myself and ignored him too.
“Hurry up! I want to speak with my father!”
In a blink of an eye, he stepped backward and left me by myself. I tried to ask what was going on until I saw Trevor covered in blood.
I’ve been waiting for this moment to talk about his actions earlier and why it took him too long to go home.
“Where have you been?” I asked, without offering to treat his wound first.
Trevor gasped and didn’t look into my eyes. He looked tired, but I ignored it because of the anger in my system.
“I’m asking you nicely. Where have you been?”
“I’m tired. Let’s talk about it after I clean up. Is that okay?”
A lonely smile flaunted on his face.
I knew it! He only wanted something from me. Now that he got it, he would ignore me for being useless.
He walked closer and took my hand. He was about to kiss it when I slapped him in a flash of lightning. I didn’t know what came into my mind, but my body reacted that way.
As soon as I realized what I had done, I took his hand and apologized for my actions.
“Look, I didn’t mean it! I got upset because of what you did earlier, and you came home a little bit late!”
Trevor didn’t utter a single word. His eyes were empty, and I was desperate to know what he was thinking.
“Please, I’m telling you the truth.”
“SILENCE!”
Trevor’s voice echoed around the patio. It was the first time he raised his voice at me, and it frightened me.
“You don’t know what I have gone through to be with you, Therese! I know I made a terrible mistake in the past, but I tried my best to be a better mate to you! I did everything to be a good father and husband who can protect his family.”
“But everything was worthless!”
I didn’t know what was going on.
This morning was beyond perfect. In a glimpse, everything turned upside down, making our lives miserable.
“What is going on? Why are you talking about the past and your efforts?”
Trevor turned around and tried to remain calm. I knew something happened while I was gone, and I must have heard it from him.
“You don’t have to know about it. I’ll find a way and settle things,” he replied.
He took a deep breath and turned his back to me.
There was only one person who ruined his mood—my father.
“Is it about my father?”
Trevor stopped taking another step away from me. His arm was bleeding, and I regretted talking to him this way.
To confirm it, I walked closer and stood before him. I looked into his eyes and repeated my question.
“I am asking you, Trevor. Is it about my father that’s bothering you?”
“Yes! Yes, it is all about your father, and if you want to know what happened. Then I’ll tell you everything!”
Seeing him this way shattered my heart into pieces. I knew my father had done something behind my back to ruin my relationship with Trevor.
I must hear the other side of the story before I confront my father.
“Tell me what happened.”
My voice cracked.
I regretted being too selfish and didn’t realize what he had to go through by himself.
“Well, your father faked an enemy attack along our way back to the mansion. Danson and I decided to split up. I took Lord Thomas with me, while Danson handled the servants, who we thought were the enemy. And you know what’s funny?”
He laughed, but I saw hatred in his eyes.
“Everything was part of your father’s plan to tell me that he would never accept you as your mate! I wanted to scream and punch someone, but I remained calm in front of him. I showed that I wasn’t hurt, but deep inside, my heart wanted to explode. I got hurt by the truth, Therese.”
Tears fell onto my face.
How could I think of something else while my mate experienced something terrible? How am I supposed to be a good and loving luna if I welcome him this way?
“I’m sorry, Trevor! I didn’t know you had to bear it alone.
The second time around, he stopped me from speaking, and I chose to understand it.
“I’m tired. I want to take a rest and sleep.”
Trevor spoke.
It was the only thing he said before he went inside the house, leaving me speechless. It was the first time we had a terrible argument, and I wished I could bring back the time to prevent it.
