Chapter 111 111. A Reflection of Her Soul
Chapter 111 111. A Reflection of Her Soul
The morning sun bathed the master suite in shades of soft gold and rose, casting warm light across the tangled sheets where Hazel lay in the arms of her husband. Her brown wavy hair fanned across the pillow, her eyes still heavy with sleep, her body pressed against the solid warmth of Michele's chest.
His hand was splayed across her bare stomach, his fingers tracing lazy circles against her skin, his lips pressing soft kisses to her shoulder. The night had been long and passionate, a celebration of the day ahead, a release of the tension that had been building for weeks.
"Good morning, sweetheart, today's the day," Michele murmured, his voice low and rough with sleep.
Hazel's heart fluttered, a mix of excitement and terror flooding her system. She rolled in his arms, her eyes meeting his. "Yeah. Today's the day," she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper.
Michele's thumb stroked her cheek, his gaze soft with adoration. "You're going to be incredible. Your art is going to blow everyone away."
"What if they hate it?" Hazel asked, her voice small.
"Hazel..." His voice was firm but gentle, cutting through her spiraling anxiety. "Stop. Your art is beautiful. Anyone who understands art is bound to fall in love with your work. You've poured your soul into this exhibition and I'm going to be there, front row, watching everyone fall in love with your work just like I fell in love with you."
Hazel chuckled, pecking his cheek. "You're biased."
"I'm honest. There's a difference. Now, I need to get to the office for a few hours. But I promise I'll be at the gallery by seven. I wouldn't miss this for anything in the world," he corrected, his lips brushing her forehead.
"You're not coming with me?" she asked, her voice tinged with disappointment.
"I'll meet you there. I have to close a deal this afternoon, but I'll be done by six and then I'm all yours. All night. I'm going to stand beside you, hold your hand and watch the world discover what I've known all along that you're brilliant," he assured her, his hand finding hers, their fingers interlacing.
Hazel's smile was radiant despite her nerves. "I love you."
"I love you too, baby," he replied, pressing a kiss to her lips. "Now, get up. You have a big day to prepare for."
The gallery was a symphony of light and color. Hazel stood in the center of the space, her heart pounding as she surveyed the final arrangement of her pieces. The walls were adorned with her paintings, each canvas a piece of her soul and emotion. The lighting was perfect, casting soft shadows that brought each work to life.
Maya appeared at her side "It's beautiful, Hazel. Absolutely breathtaking."
Hazel's fingers trembled as she smoothed the fabric of her soft champagne dress. "I'm so nervous, Maya. I don’t know. What if…"
"No," Maya interrupted, her voice firm. "No what-ifs. You've worked too hard for this. Tonight, you're going to shine."
The doors opened at seven and the first guests began to trickle in. Hazel's heart raced as she greeted each one, her smile fixed, her hands clammy with anxiety and then she saw him.
Michele Richardson strode through the entrance, his charcoal suit immaculate, his black hair perfectly styled, his brown eyes sweeping the room until they found her. His expression softened, a slow smile curving his lips as he crossed the room in long, purposeful strides.
"You're here," Hazel breathed, her voice thick with relief.
"I promised, didn't I? I wouldn't miss this for anything," he murmured, his hand finding hers, his thumb stroking her knuckles.
His presence was a balm to her frayed nerves. She felt her anxiety begin to ebb, replaced by a warmth that radiated from her very core.
The evening unfolded in a blur of introductions and compliments. Hazel found herself surrounded by art critics, gallery owners and collectors, each one offering praise that made her heart soar.
"Your work is extraordinary, Mrs. Richardson. The emotion in these pieces is palpable. You have a rare gift," an older woman said, her eyes bright with admiration.
Hazel's cheeks flushed. "Thank you. That means more than you know."
Michele appeared at her side, his arm sliding around her waist, his presence commanding and proud. "My wife is incredibly talented. I've been telling her that all this while. It's nice to see the world finally catching up," he said, his voice warm.
The woman's smile widened. "You're a lucky man, Mr. Richardson."
"I know," he replied, his gaze dropping to Hazel. "Every single day."
The night wore on and Hazel's confidence grew with each passing moment. She found herself relaxing into the rhythm of the evening, her laughter genuine, her smile radiant.
But it was Michele's pride that made her heart swell. He stood beside her through every introduction, his hand never leaving hers. He praised her work to anyone who would listen, his voice filled with an earnestness that made her eyes sting with tears.
"This piece is my favorite. It's about finding light after darkness. About hope," he said, gesturing to a canvas that depicted a woman emerging from shadows.
The crowd around them murmured with appreciation. A journalist approached, her notepad in hand, her smile professional. "Mrs. Richardson, your work is receiving incredible feedback tonight. Can you tell us what inspired this collection?"
Hazel's fingers tightened around Michele's. "Love. Redemption. The journey from darkness to light. All of these pieces are about finding your way back to yourself and finding someone who sees you for who you truly are" she said, her voice steady.
The journalist nodded, her pen moving across the page. "And Mr. Richardson, how does it feel to support your wife's artistic journey?"
Michele's grin was slow and wolfish. "It feels like the honor of a lifetime. She is the most talented person I've ever known and tonight, the world is finally seeing what I've always seen. I’m so proud to be her husband."
The night drew to a close, the last guests trickling out of the gallery. Hazel stood alone in the center of the room, her eyes scanning her works with a sense of profound satisfaction.
Michele appeared behind her, his arms wrapping around her waist, his lips pressing to her ear. "You did it, darling. You were incredible."
Hazel leaned back against him, her body sagging with relief. "I couldn't have done it without you."
"You could have. But I'm glad I was here. I wouldn't have missed this for anything," he corrected, his voice low and warm.
She turned in his arms, her hands cupping his face. "Thank you for being here. For believing in me. For everything," she whispered.
"I'll always believe in you, baby," he murmured, his forehead pressing to hers.
His lips found hers in a kiss that was tender and fierce, a promise of more to come. The gallery was empty, the lights dimmed, the world reduced to just the two of them.
"Let's go home," Hazel whispered against his mouth.
"Let's go home," he agreed, his hand finding hers.
They walked out of the gallery hand in hand, the city lights twinkling in the distance. The night was young and their love was infinite. The ride home was quiet, filled with the comfortable silence of two people who knew each other completely. Hazel rested her head against Michele's shoulder, her eyes closed, her heart full.
"You really meant what you said tonight? About my art being beautiful?" she asked, her voice soft.
Michele's hand found hers, their fingers interlacing. "Every word, sweetheart. Your art is a reflection of you and you are the most beautiful thing in my world."
Hazel's eyes opened, meeting his. "I love you, Michele Richardson."
"I love you too, Mrs. Hazel Richardson," he replied, his lips brushing her forehead.
The car pulled into the driveway and Michele helped her out, his hand never leaving hers. The mansion was quiet, the children asleep, the house bathed in the soft glow of night.
He led her up the stairs, his arm around her waist, his lips pressing soft kisses to her neck. "I'm so proud of you," he murmured against her skin.
