Chapter 62
Chapter 62
"How will we know without trying!" Bianca crossed her arms. "Alright, don't overthink it now. Mr. Visconti is here!"
She pointed toward Algernon, who had just come down from upstairs.
Bianca didn't believe Quinlan couldn't win Algernon's favor.
Priscilla was about to enter the banquet hall when she saw Algernon.
His entrance drew considerable attention.
Mason looked at his grandson with pride.
Among everyone in the Visconti family, no one could compare to Algernon.
"Mr. Visconti!" Seeing Algernon appear, Quinlan's eyes filled with desperate determination.
Take the gamble! If she won, after today her status would be even more prestigious.
Quinlan believed Algernon would never publicly reject her.
As long as Algernon didn't refuse, she'd have endless opportunities!
Hearing someone call him from behind, Algernon instinctively turned around.
The moment he turned, Quinlan pretended to lose her balance, stumbling toward Algernon.
They weren't far apart to begin with—Quinlan's staggering steps positioned her perfectly to fall into Algernon's arms.
Even a stranger might instinctively reach out to catch her out of reflex.
Priscilla stood at a distance watching Quinlan about to fall into Algernon's embrace, feeling a strange sensation in her chest.
She felt like she was jealous, yet also hoping Quinlan would fall flat on the ground and make a complete fool of herself!
However, unexpectedly, Algernon simply stepped aside, letting Quinlan fall to the ground.
Quinlan's mind went blank. Compared to the surrounding murmurs, the sharp pain of hitting the ground hurt even more.
To make her act convincing, Quinlan had used considerable force, hoping to make Algernon feel sorry for her. Now lying on the ground, she was in too much pain to get up.
Bianca certainly hadn't expected that Algernon, standing right there, wouldn't even help Quinlan up.
The intense pain made Quinlan's eyes turn red.
Maddox stood nearby shaking his head.
Another woman who couldn't read the room.
As Algernon's close friend, he'd known about the broken engagement long ago.
In Maddox's view, Algernon not canceling the engagement publicly but discussing it privately with Quinlan was already generous.
Moreover, Quinlan had deceived him first.
Though Algernon hadn't told him who was actually in the room that night, judging by his completely different attitudes toward the two sisters...
The answer was obvious.
Maddox couldn't help moving closer with an entertained expression.
Quite a crowd had gathered now.
Seeing Algernon completely ignore Quinlan throughout, Bianca couldn't help her anger. "Mr. Visconti, how can you be so indifferent!"
Yvaine had just come downstairs to witness this scene.
She was somewhat angry.
She walked forward in her heels and helped Quinlan up from the ground.
"What are you saying, Mrs. Medici? A young lady tripped on her dress—should we blame my son for that?" Yvaine asked in a gentle tone.
Though her tone was gentle, the warning beneath was barely concealed.
Bianca stammered, "That's not what I meant!"
"It's just... it's just..." She wanted to say that Quinlan was still technically Algernon's fiancée—he couldn't embarrass his fiancée like this.
But she couldn't bring herself to say "fiancée."
Algernon glanced at Quinlan sitting on the ground with red, pitiful eyes.
"If you're not used to wearing heels, you don't have to in the future." He said.
Algernon's regard for Quinlan kept declining.
Not receiving the response she'd expected, Quinlan burst into tears.
"I... I didn't mean to!" She murmured.
Someone in the crowd couldn't stand it anymore.
"Engaged for four years without getting married, and after falling in front of so many people, that's the response she gets. If it were me, I'd break down too." Someone said.
These words seemed to touch Quinlan—she cried even harder.
Priscilla watched her quietly, watching her gamble everything for Algernon.
Soon, her gaze found Preston in the crowd.
Preston stood among the people, looking at Quinlan on the ground. He instinctively wanted to reach out, but his hand froze mid-air.
He didn't want to get involved with Quinlan.
Too embarrassing.
Yvaine didn't give Quinlan much time to react, immediately having someone take her to change clothes.
After that fall, her dress was already soiled.
Algernon watched Quinlan's departing figure, hearing the faint discussions behind him, and couldn't help speaking up.
"Everyone, since you're all here today, I have an announcement to make."
Quinlan, who was about to go upstairs to change, stopped in her tracks.
Her hands involuntarily gripped her dress tighter.
"Ms. Quinlan Medici and I, due to various reasons, have canceled our engagement." He said.
Priscilla's racing heart suddenly skipped a beat. She instinctively looked toward the frozen Quinlan.
Bianca hadn't expected at all that Algernon would publicly announce the broken engagement in front of everyone.
This way, Quinlan had lost even her last shred of dignity.
Yvaine looked at Algernon with some displeasure. "Everyone, don't misunderstand. We'd been preparing for their wedding, but during the compatibility analysis, we found they weren't well-suited. So after friendly communication, we unanimously decided to cancel the engagement."
These were all face-saving words. In reality, after being rejected by the Visconti family, what the future held for Quinlan with her child was anyone's guess.
Just as Priscilla felt somewhat dazed, Chase suddenly grasped her hand.
"Alright, Algernon, today is the great day of your grandfather's discharge from the hospital—why bring this up?" Chase walked out holding Priscilla's hand.
To outsiders, Priscilla appeared to be intimately supporting Chase.
Mason and Chase exchanged a glance, understanding each other's thoughts.
"That's right. Quinlan is like a granddaughter to us! But they really weren't compatible, so this marriage arrangement is temporarily canceled!" Mason waved his hand.
Since even he said so, though people might have thoughts privately, they couldn't express them outwardly.
After the party ended.
Mason took Chase's hand. "Chase, it's so late now. Don't go back—just rest here with me!"
They could have a good chat.
Chase agreed wholeheartedly. "Absolutely. When you were hospitalized, I thought I'd never see you again in this lifetime."
Who could have imagined they'd meet again?
"I should head back now." Priscilla said after thinking.
Verity was still at home. Though Kieran was there, she was still somewhat worried.
