FORTY-SEVEN

**-Indy’s POV-**

I’m sitting next to his bed, waiting for him to wake up. The doctor said he should be awake soon, he’s recovering well. I watch the dark ball of fur and touch his back. I can feel the strong body under his fur, I sigh: what a mess! I’m proud of my wolf, though. She did well yesterday. She fought for what she believes is hers. I feel tears in my eyes and my heart is grieving. I’ve lost my battle, and I’ve to live with that. I tried to give him another chance, but it was like fighting to a darkness I knew I couldn’t win.

I hear somebody on the hallway and I turn around: Scott. I smile, “Hey…”

“Hey *babae*... How are you?”

I nod. “I’m… OK, I guess. It was a rough night, it started good and then - well…” I take the coffee he brought for me and I thank him. Scott lifts me up, sits on the chair I was in a few seconds ago and I cuddle up against his chest. We both watch the sleeping, black wolf in front of us.

“It’s funny,” Scott says, “I’m so much less threatened by Khal in his wolf form around you, than Khal was in his human… Raki is much more… uhm… peaceful, or something. It feels different.”

I smile, I know what he means. Although I’m pretty sure that I’m the only one that can sense a person’s aura, we are still werewolves: nature-beings. Our instincts will tell if somebody is bad or not. We cannot forget to trust those feelings. “I know...” I whisper.

“What do you want us to do now, princess?” Scott asks me.

I’m surprised. “What do you mean?” I stare into the green eyes with a frown on my forehead.

“Well, Khal is dead, right? It’s just Raki now. Can a wolf lead a pack? I don’t think so… And because it’s your former pack and still somehow his mate, you should have a say in this too.”

I’ve thought about it. “Jeff is his Beta, he should know. I think it’s for the best if Hunter goes back to the pack again and brings the news to him. Jeff isn’t a bad person, he’s being the best Beta he can with the few lessons he had…”

Scott nods. “Alright, I think that’s a good idea. They’re familiar with Hunter now, it’s the best if they hear the news from him. Besides, Hunter is a very wise and strong man - he’s the best man for the job right now. He can assist Beta Jeff for the time being.”

Scott stops talking and I know instinctively that he’s mindlinking: he just needs to act immediately, no waiting. “Scott?” I ask him.

“Hmmm?”

“I want you to mark me.”

“What?”

I almost feel the shock on his face and I chuckle. “Well, not only you. Ryan too. At the same time. Not now… but, soon.”

I feel a kiss on my forehead. “I would love too, and I’m certain Ryan will too..” Scott says with a raspy voice making me wet instantly. I really don’t want to waste any time on the mates I’ve still left. I want to feel them, connect with them, bond with them.. I look back at Raki and think about Khal. Yes, I really want that all, before it’s too late again…

“Indy!”

“I saw it too…” I answer. Raki moved! I jump up and run to the hallway. “Doctor? He’s waking up!”

I hurry back to the room and I’m right on time to watch Raki look around the room, confused that he’s on a bed too. He wants to stand up, but that’s hard when your four paws are not on a solid ground.

“Easy, Raki! You’ve slept for almost 18 hours… We should check your vitals first.”

I’m surprised I still feel a pull when I watch into the dark eyes of the wolf in front of me. It’s not as strong as before, but I’m certainly intrigued by his presence. I walk over to the wolf who’s still staring at me. I try to comfort him with a touch on his back. “You know who I am right?” I ask, softly. “I’m Buwan’s human, Indy. My wolf is your mate…”

Raki’s eyes turn even more darker and he growls, the moment my hand touches his fur. I’m surprised, but take my hand away. “Look, I’m sorry what happened yesterday, alright? But you knew him, you knew there was no other way! He never was going to accept me, you already knew that…”

Raki growls even harder now and Scott warns me: “Easy, babae…” But I’m not afraid of the wolf that’s mated to mine, I just can’t. But I understand that it’s difficult for him to accept the fact that I was the one that killed his human, sort of. It was Buwan’s teeth, but my actions.

I just smile at Raki and start undressing. I hear doctors and nurses coming in and Scott growling at them, not wanting them to see me naked. “Indy… What are you doing?” he hisses to me.

But I don’t care, I know Raki needs her. I close my eyes and try to shift. Darn, it’s just as painful as yesterday. It’s quicker, though. Before I know it, I’m standing on four paws.

*Buwan, he needs you. Make sure he’s comfortable and emotionally stable. Take as much time as you need.*

I give Buwan control and she immediately jumps on the bed and starts licking Raki’s face. She curls up against him and it looks like Raki is accepting her, he takes a deep breath and lays his big head on Buwan’s body to rest. I watch Scott leaving the room through her eyes and I can’t help but smile. The doctors can wait. I’m certain that Raki just needs his mate, now. He needs time...

**-Jeff’s POV-**

I watch Hunter in disbelief. “NO! That can’t be! I - I still feel him, the Alpha isn’t dead! YOU’RE LYING!”

Hunter nods. “I understand, I know how you feel. But he’s gone, Beta Jeff. Only his wolf is alive, that’s why you can still feel him. But Khal the human is gone…”

“That’s impossible, right?” I stare at old Alpha, Khal’s father. But he doesn’t say a thing, he’s just standing there with his arms crossed. I look back at Hunter.

“Look, man. You know I like you. You’re a good man. But you’re lying right now, it can’t be. So tell me just the truth now, and I will keep my mouth shut when Khal’s back. What do you want? Money? I don’t have much, but I can give you something. You want status? I can make you a Delta if you want..”

Hunter keeps his small smile, his eyes full of sorry. “I don’t want to, Beta Jeff. You know I’m not seeking any power, I have my mate - and soon a child of our own - and that’s enough for me. Alpha Scott wants you to know that you can ask for help any time. And I’ll be here to help too, I…”

“FUCK Alpha Scott! FUCK those idiots! They did this - I don’t want any help, I…”

I’m lost for words, my brain is a mess right now. How did this happen? He was there to convince them to have an alliance. Then there was a fight and he got injured, Hunter sent me pictures of him and the doctor-reports to keep me updated. So I knew those things were true. But now? It’s impossible to show a death when his wolf is still there. When you shift, the body is simply changing - so how can you prove that his soul is gone?

“Easy, Beta Jeff..” I hear Hunter say.

“Don’t tell me what to do! You just told me our Alpha died, but his wolf is still there. You just told me that his so-called mate and previous member of our pack killed him. That she’s a Luna-to-be and she had the right too. But how can a she-wolf kill AN ALPHA!? That’s just impossible.. And that’s why I say that you’re lying!”

I hear myself screaming against (the still calm) Hunter in front of me but I don’t care I’m making a fool of myself. I just need to fight for my Alpha, I always will. I storm out of the office and I hear Hunter following me.

“Beta Jeff! What are you doing?”

“I need some air… Leave me alone!” I shout back, only to see that Hunter stops chasing me. Good, because if he can’t give me answers I’ll go get them myself. I let my wolf take over and head South.
